The Quotes Of John Lennon

John Lennon - Imagine
John Lennon had a touch of the mystics about him, as illustrated in the quotes below:

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down happy. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.

There are two basic motivating forces: fear and love. When we are afraid, we pull back from life. When we are in love, we open to all that life has to offer with passion, excitement, and acceptance. We need to learn to love ourselves first, in all our glory and our imperfections. If we cannot love ourselves, we cannot fully open to our ability to love others or our potential to create. Evolution and all hopes for a better world rest in the fearlessness and open-hearted vision of people who embrace life.

I believe in God, but not as one thing, not as an old man in the sky. I believe that what people call God is something in all of us. I believe that what Jesus and Mohammed and Buddha and all the rest said was right. It's just that the translations have gone wrong.

I'm not afraid of death because I don't believe in it. It's just getting out of one car, and into another.

We live in a world where we have to hide to make love, while violence is practiced in broad daylight.

I believe in everything until it's disproved. So I believe in fairies, the myths and dragons. It all exists, even if it's in your mind. Who's to say that dreams and nightmares aren't as real as the here and now?

I know we make our own reality, and we always have a choice, but how much is preordained? Is there always a fork in the road, and are there two preordained paths that are equally preordained? There could be hundreds of paths where one could go this way or that way - there's a chance, and it's very strange sometimes.

And a few quick quips from John Lennon:

Love is like a flower-you've got to let it grow.

God is a concept by which we measure our pain.

Nothing is real.

How can I go forward when I don't know which way I'm facing.

The more real you get the more unreal the world gets.

There are no problems, only solutions.

People like me are aware of their so-called genius at ten, eight, nine ... I always wondered, "Why has nobody discovered me?" In school, didn't they see that I'm cleverer than anybody in this school? That the teachers are stupid, too? That all they had was information that I didn't need? I got f****** lost in being at High School. I used to say to me aunty "You throw my f****** poetry out, you'll regret it when I'm famous - and she threw the bastard stuff out.

I never forgave her for not treating me like a f****** genius or whatever I was, when I was a child. It was obvious to me. Why didn't they put me in art school? Why didn't they train me? Why would they keep forcing me to be a f****** cowboy like the rest of them? I was different.

I was always different. Why didn't anybody notice me? A couple of teachers would notice me, encourage me to be something or other, to draw or to paint - express myself. But most of the time they were trying to beat me into being a f****** dentist or a teacher"

I guess it's necessary to include a link to John Lennon singing Imagine (YouTube video), as most of the words could be quotes - and below a video of his humour.

Glastonbury Tor Set To Music

A 4 minute video I came across and liked because it features Glastonbury Tor in England, where I like to visit. The area is sometimes mentioned as being one of the Earth's energy centers. The music is very pleasant and magical too.

The I Have Lived Here Before Coincidence

A coincidence story from a 67 Not Out reader today, my thanks to Marilyn Cundiff.

cartoon house clipartA friend introduced me to a journalist on our local newspaper as she thought I might be able to help her with a story she was doing. She was wanting some local photos from the war years, which my friend knew I had.

The journalist said she would pop round to my home the following day to look at the photos, which I said she could borrow. I told her my address and she couldn't believe it as she had lived there as a child.

The next day she arrived as arranged and asked if her mother, who was sitting in the car, could come into the house as she would love to see it again. I agreed and showed them round and it brought a lot of memories back for them both.

We got talking for quite a while and the mother said that, previous to this address, she lived in another part of town when she first married. I told her I also used to live in that area. "Where?" she asked. I told her and she couldn't believe it - as this was exactly the same house where she had lived as well.

We have all become friends since that day and sometimes I wonder if we have some sort of special link, maybe from a previous life or something.

How To Bring The Dead Back To LIfe

Eliphas LeviI've mentioned previously about how I like to look for old books at such places as Flea Markets and Car Boot Sales. One I recently picked up was by Eliphas Levi and part of it made me smile.

In a section called 'Practical Secrets' it mentioned how to bring a dead person back to life - DIY resurrection if you like.

Eliphas Levi (1810-1875) was an occult author and a magician - a real one, that is, not a stage magician. He is quoted as saying, "To practice magic is to be a quack; to know magic is to be a sage."

But let's get back to the 'practical' way to raise the dead - well some of them.

In the book's opinion 'when we are ripe for death, we leave without regret, and nothing would make us take it back; but when it is premature, the soul regrets life."

If we die, and are not really ready to do so, this is when we can supposedly be resurrected:

Resurrection'The sacred books indicate to us the proceeding which must be employed in such a case. The Prophet Elisha and the Apostle St Paul employed it with success.

The deceased must be magnetized by placing the feet on his feet, the hands on his hands, the mouth on his mouth. Then concentrate the whole will for a long time, call to itself the escaped soul, using all the loving thoughts and mental caresses of which one is capable.

If the operator inspires in that soul much affection or great respect, if in the thought which he communicates magnetically to it the thaumaturgist can persuade it that life is still necessary to it, and that happy days are still in store for it below, it will certainly return, and for the man of everyday science the apparent dead will have been only a lethargy."

Eliphas Levi then gives an example of how a gentleman, by the name of William Postel, was recalled to life by his mother, Jeanne, using this method. William was returned 'with new youth' and afterwards styled himself as Postellus restitutus - Postel the Resurrected.

A blacksmith, M.Leriche, an adept at hermetic science also brought back to life the lover of a ballet girl. As he went to try and resurrect the man the doctor told him that, "It is useless to go upstairs, he died six hours ago." A death certificate had been issued.

The man, named Candy, was brought back to life and lived from that time on without ever being ill. He said of his experience, "You may laugh as much as you like. All I know is, that a death certificate was signed and a burial licence made out; eighteen hours later they were going to bury me, and yet here I am."

So, there we go, a practical way to bring some people back to life. As Eliphas Levi taught, "Nothing can resist the will of man when he knows what is true and wills what is good." And though most will mock the content of this post there is undoubtedly a truth in that statement.

Other quotes by Eliphas Levi :

The will of a just man is the Will of God Himself and the Law of Nature.

Say to suffering, 'I will that you shall become a pleasure,' and it will prove to be such - and even more than a pleasure, it will be a blessing.

Man is the God of the world, and God is the man of Heaven.

The divine ideal of the ancient world made the civilization which came to an end, and one must not despair of seeing the God of our barbarous fathers become the devil of our more enlightened children.

God is He whom we shall eternally learn to know better, and, consequently, He whom we shall never know entirely.

A Moebius Strip Which Made A Ship Disappear

A Moebius Strip
I remember many years ago I was quite intrigued by a Moebius Strip. This is a geometric figure with only one side - as per the example I made earlier in the photo above.

It's not exactly rocket science to make a Moebius Strip as it is simply a strip of paper that has been given one twist with the ends then joined together - but this does only have one side.

If you take a pencil and draw a line down it's centre the line will connect up with where you started - thus proving it has only one side. If you were then to take some scissors, and cut along the pencil line, this would then turn into one large circle (as photo below) - and not two interlinked circles as perhaps might be expected.

A Moebius Strip cut down the centre to create one bigger circle
Okay so what has this got to do with a ship disappearing?

It's sort of linked to the Philadelphia Experiment. This is where, back in 1943, US scientists induced a powerful magnetic field on board a destroyer - in Philadelphia. This supposedly led to the ship becoming invisible. It also affected the crew on board. Some became insane, two burst into flames plus others had severe problems.

If this is fact or fiction nobody knows for sure but, it seems, there has been another version of the Philadelphia Experiment. This time the story comes from a Professor Doru Todericiu who obtained the information from Russian Intelligence about American experiments.

It is alleged that the US were experimenting with a magnetic field in the shape of a Moebius Strip.

According to the story a submarine followed a strong magnetic field in the shape of a Moebius Strip, turning over once in every revolution. A special electronic device was then used to cut the field in two and, at this point, the submarine disappeared from view and appeared in another place.

Most will no doubt write this off as fiction but scientists have investigated magnetic fields even within the field of the paranormal.

Way back in the 1920s the British financed research and a Dr. WE Boyd was convinced that electric currents could increase telepathic powers. He created something called an emanometer. With the help of this equipment high scores were obtained by those taking part with card guessing experiments.

In their book Psychic Discoveries Behind the Iron Curtain Sheila Ostrander and Lynn Schroeder tell about how Russian scientists have improved telepathic communications when the subjects were surrounded by magnetic fields.

I don't think we should write such things as being stuff and nonsense. When the time is right I'm sure we will find amazing powers attributed to magnetic and similar fields.

The Ghost Between The Girls Legs

The ghost between the legs
A group of young people and one of them decides to take a photo with his mobile phone, before they head off out. Probably something that's done thousands of times all over the world. But take a second look at the photo - there's a ghost between the girls' legs!

If not a ghost then what?

photo of a ghostMatthew Summers took the photo. He explains, "I zoomed in to my sister's mate's little sister who was crying and I saw a face. You can see all the facial expressions and everything."

The strange thing is that there had been sightings of a ghostly small child in the house previously.

So is this really a spirit or ghost captured on a photo? Those 'experts' will say no, of course. "It's all down to how we tend to 'see' faces in everything from clouds and trees to ink blots," they will no doubt tell us. But ... experts aren't always right, are they?

Santa Eulalia Church And The Roman Bridge

Santa Eulalia
As we approached Santa Eulalia by boat - while on our holiday in Ibiza - the town's church was easily seen, high on a hill in the background.

The Puig de Missa dates back to the 16th century, and is under the district of the parish of Saint Mary. In west London, as a baby, I was Christened in the church of Saint Mary where my parents had been married, so a bit of a coincidence there.

Santa Eulalia church Puig de Missa
I felt quite at home after climbing to the top of the hill to visit the Santa Eulalia church - as I like arches! And the church has many fine examples, as can be seen by the photos.

From the church there are great views of the town, sea and countryside. Look to the east and there is a Roman bridge, which was originally used as the route into Santa Eulalia town. After our visit to the church was over we made our way to see the bridge.

Roman Bridge at Santa Eulalia
The bridge has recently been renovated and, in my opinion, a little too much work has been done. It's good that it has been preserved and not allowed to crumble, but somehow it didn't feel quite right.

Roman Bridge at Santa Eulalia, Ibiza
As for the Romans they date back to 123BC when they conquered Ibiza and the Balearic Islands.

Though Ibiza never became part of the Roman Empire they did rename the island as Ebusus.

William Shakespeare Coincidences

William Shakespeare
The evil that men do lives after them;
The good is oft interred with their bones ...

At school I never really appreciated William Shakespeare. But, as one of my exam subjects was English literature, I had to study some of his works. The quote above, by Mark Anthony from Julius Caesar, has always stuck in my mind - as there is often an element of truth in this.

I'll leave Shakespeare's works to those who enjoy him. The theme today is coincidences (for a change!) but lighthearted ones.

William Shakespeare, often said to be England's greatest playwright, was born on the 23rd of April 1564, which just happens to also be the English Patron Saint's Day on the 23rd of April - St.George, that is.

But, as Shakespeare was special, he also left this mortal coil on the 23rd of April in 1616. Oh, and 'mortal coil' comes from Shakespeare's Hamlet.

Some wonder if Shakespeare knew he was about to pop his clogs as he made out his Last Will and Testament on the 25th of March 1616, 30 days prior to his death.

There is quite a well known coincidence between the Bible and William Shakespeare.

The King James Bible was published in 1610 when the bard was 46 years old. If we take the aforementioned book and go to Psalm 46 and count the 46th word from the beginning this will be 'shake' - 'though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof.'

If we then count 46 words from the end of Psalm 46 the word is spear - 'and cutteth the spear in sunder'.

Put the two words together and we have ..... (no need to send in the answer!)

But there's more, though this is maybe stretching things a little.

As I said, William was 46 in 1610. So if we add 4+6 and we get 10.

Staying with Psalm 46 go to verse 10 (because 4+6=10 or because it's year 10) it says: 'Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted in the earth.'

Okay, now count in 6 words and we get I am, count another 4 words and we get will. Rearrange these chosen words and, yes, we now have William.

So ... was there an 'in' joke going on by the translators and William Shakespeare? Guess it's no less likely than a lot of the other conspiracy stories on the Internet. A long time ago (40+ years) the London Times supposedly reported that 'the insertion of Shakespeare's name was a tribute to him, and a 46th birthday present, by some of the translators, who knew his work and might have known him personally.'

A Batch Of Birthday Coincidences

A bit late with this coincidence as it happened while I was away on holiday. It's from New Zealand.

Belinda Lansley had a baby. 'So what?' you may say.

She had the baby in the bath. 'So?'

The coincidence is that little Louis was born at 12.13 pm on the 9th of October.

Yes, that's the coincidence as the baby made his way into this world at exactly 9-10-11 at 12.13. So a nice run of sequential numbers, which doesn't happen very often.

Parents Belinda and Stuart Lansley were said to be 'stunned' by the coincidence and Belinda said, "As I was trying to push him out, my husband was saying, 'Oh, wouldn't it be funny if he was born at 12.13', and he was."

Louis wasn't expected until the 18th of October but he must have thought he'd make it an extra special event. He weighed in at 7lbs 5ozs. Just imagine if he'd have been 3ozs heavier - but Belinda and Stuart are happy enough with the result as are Louis' two sisters.

And another baby birthday story ...

Baby boy cartoon clipartSammy Kellet, from Preston in England, had a baby on the 20th of October - her previous children were also born on the same day - different years, of course! This is said to be at odds of 133,590-1. So baby Kyle joins Keiran, 6 and Kaiden, 3 with ther same birth date. Should be quite a party. Why do all the names begin with 'K'? No idea!

Travelling To Infinity And Beyond With Graffiti

Graffiti street art
I know I shouldn't, but I like some forms of graffiti - or should it be called street art? The picture above I saw in Ibiza and there's something about it that appealed to me for some reason.

Then I noticed the 'message' below, which isn't easy to read but it says:

I want to go to infinity
and beyond .. I want to
fly in the skies and swim
in the seas. I want to be
as free as a bird and
as wild as a horse.
I have happy and sad
moments. I am happy.
Well at least I think
so. There is just
one thing
that's missing
and that's you ... I
think you know who
you are ... With you
I want to go to infinity
and beyond and never
turn back.

Yes, I know it's a bit naff, and I must be getting a bit soft, but at the time the picture and the words seemed to fit together. Or maybe it was the sunshine and too many glasses of red wine. In the cold light of day it's maybe not quite so special at all, except for the people concerned. But that's as with much of life.

67 Years After The D-Day Landings They Meet By Coincidence

D-Day landing craft in the English Channel heading for Normandy
This is a touching true coincidence story I read in the Daily Mail, but I have put this into my own words.

Clifford Baker and Bill Betts, were part of the D-Day Landings in World War 2. Clifford will be 98 today and Bill is a mere lad of 88.

67 years ago they were soldiers with the Essex Yeomanry and had been friends during two years of training as radio operators. They were then dispatched to Normandy in France and were part of the invasion on the beaches at Arromanches which helped to change the course of WW2.

The last time they had seen each other was at the time of the invasion. Bill was shot in the leg by a German heavy machine gun and lay injured. Clifford saw his friend but was told to carry on and run past him.

Bill lay on the beach for eight hours until he was finally rescued by US forces.

Bill and Clifford had not seen each other since that day but a remarkable coincidence changed all that.

Bill was revisiting the Normandy Beach and went to sign the town's remembrance book in the D-Day museum. As he did so he noticed that the previous name was none other than Clifford Baker, his old friend.

Clifford, on an unconnected visit, had signed the book just 20 minutes earlier and what's more Bill was able to find him in the car park. They had a tearful reunion and embraced each other after 67 years.

Clifford told reporters, "Clifford and I were suddenly face to face so you can imagine how emotional that was. We had a chat about D-Day and events that happened such a long time ago. The memories of it all are still very clear in my mind.

I was so pleased to return to the very stretch of beach on which I landed all those years ago. The meeting with my old comrade Bill was unexpected to say the least but very happy and emotional. I thought I'd never see him again."

Sometimes it's easy to forget what men and women like Bill and Clifford did for us during the second world war. How wonderful that they could meet up again. It was surely destined in the stars - or wherever - and was meant to happen.

The photo, which is in the Public Domain, shows a convoy of Landing Craft Infantry sailing across the English Channel toward the Normandy Invasion beaches on "D-Day", 6 June 1944. Each of these landing craft is towing a barrage balloon for protection against low-flying German aircraft.

P.S. Happy 98th Birthday Clifford.

Hippy Heaven On Ibiza Lives On

Sign for the Hippy Market Es Cana
As I mentioned in yesterday's post Ibiza was 'invaded' by the hippies in the 1960s but actually this wasn't the start of the modern 'invasions'. These began in the 1950s with the Beatniks - if anyone remembers them, that is.

Hippy Market Ibiza
The island became known for it's free-thinking, liberal lifestyles and attracted artists, writers, musicians and those with a more relaxed way of life.

Music at Hippy Market, Ibiza
Following tourism being made available for the masses in the 1960s the hippies, or peluts (hairies) as the locals called them, flooded to Ibiza. The likes of Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell joined in the fun along with New Agers.

Tibetan Singing Bowls
Whereas the Hippy lifestyle gradually lost it's appeal in most parts of the world it still lives on in Ibiza. Some of the original 1960s Hippies remain.

Music Hippy Market Es Cana
While we were on the island we went to one of the Hippy Markets at Es Cana. It's an all day event from 10am to 7pm. There's music and street performers but mainly it's the stalls that attract the crowds selling interesting styles of jewellery, clothes and New Age bits and pieces.

Hippy Market Ibiza
I snapped the photos included on this post at the Hippy Market.

And there's always the street performers who like to show off ... he's for real but somehow stays in the same uncomfortable position ... and if you put a coin in his pot he smiles.

Ibiza Old Town And A God Who Strangled Snakes

Ibiza Old Town
As I wrote in my post yesterday I have just returned from a holiday in Ibiza, and what an interesting place it is - especially the Ibiza old town.

The history goes back some 3000 years and the Phoenicians, Romans, Vandals, and the Moors have all played their part and added to the culture. Then there was another invasion in the 1960s by the Hippies - but more about them another day.

Ibiza Old Town walls, Eivissa
Ibiza Old Town, known locally as Vila d'Eivissa or simply Eivissa, is a town within a town surrounded by walls and battlements originally to protect the inhabitants from the threat of pirates.

Ibiza Old Town
Though the history goes back much, much further the walls, or fortress, was built around 1554 by King Felipe II. It's on a hill so there are magnificent views over the harbour, sea and surrounding area. The walls were so strongly built that they are one of the only fortifications with the complete original structure still in place within Europe.

Ibiza Town harbour viewed from the Ibiza Old Town Walls
It is believed that the first Ibiza Town was created by the Carthaginians around 654 BC, which would make this one of the earliest towns in Europe.

The first known name for the island was Ibosim and came about because the Phoenicians worshipped a god called Bes. Ibosim translates as the island of Bes.

Bes seems an interesting enough god as he protected men from evil spirits and had the power to strangle snakes with his bare hands. He was also interested in music and dancing. His influence lives on as there are no poisonous snakes on the island and Ibiza is full of music and dancing. So he must be for real!

The Cathedral at Ibiza Old Town Santa Maria d'Eivissa
At the very top of Ibiza Old Town, or Dalt Vila, is the 14th century cathedral of Santa Maria d'Eivissa.

Santa Maria d'Eivissa Ibiza Old Town Cathedral
Inside the cathedral it's pretty much standard, as can be seen from the two photos below.

Inside Ibiza Old Town Cathedral
Inside Ibiza Old Town Cathedral
To reach the cathedral there are underground tunnels or walkways ...

Tunnels leading to the Cathedral
... with some with strange rooms off of them ...

Defending the Old Town of Ibiza
The houses within the Ibiza Old Town walls, and on cobbled streets, are full of flowers and character ...

... and a final view looking out over the harbour and to the new town.
