Evander Holyfield Not Recognised By Olympic TV Team

Evander Holyfield outside Buckingham Palace

I hadn't heard of this story here in England, but this happened following the opening ceremony of the London Olympics.

The New York Daily News reported on the NBC London based coverage:

"As part of its Olympic coverage, the Today Show stopped random people in front of Buckingham Palace to ask about Queen Elizabeth’s performance with Daniel Craig during the opening ceremony. Among them was a man in a white baseball cap and blue T-shirt who called the Queen 'wonderful'."

What none of the NBC team noticed was that, by coincidence, the man they had asked at random, wearing the white baseball cap, was none other than heavyweight boxing legend Evander Holyfield.

Holyfield Tweeted:

"Look, the @todayshow did a good job. It was hard to recognize me with the baseball cap. This could happen to any reporter. LOL!!"

He followed this with another Tweet:

"Hopefully when I get on the @todayshow they will remember who I am! I won't be wearing my white baseball cap! LOL."

Evander Holyfield won a bronze medal in the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

The Vampire With Iron Teeth

Southern Necropolis cemetery in Glagow, Scotland
Southern Necropolis Cemetery, Glasgow, Scotland
The children were well armed with sharpened sticks, knives and other weapons. They meant business as they approached the Southern Necropolis Cemetery in Glagow, Scotland.

Their mission was simple. They had no choice as two children had already been consumed. They were searching for a 7ft vampire monster with iron teeth.

The vampire had been seen in the graveyard and the kids were determined to capture this monster before it could devour any more children.

On the 23rd of September 1954 the police were alerted. They tried to explain to the children, and their parents, that no such creature was at large.

This didn't satisfy the armed mob of child vampire hunters who returned to the historic cemetery immediately after sunset the following night, and the night after that.

Ronnie Sanderson was eight years old at the time and explained what happened:

"It all started in the playground - the word was there was a vampire and everyone was going to head out there after school.

At three o'clock the school emptied and everyone made a beeline for it. We sat there for ages on the wall waiting and waiting. I wouldn't go in because it was a bit scary for me.

I think somebody saw someone wandering about and the cry went up: 'There's the vampire!'

That was it - that was the word to get off that wall quick and get away from it.

I just remember scampering home to my mother who asked, 'What's the matter with you?'

'I've seen a vampire!' I got a clout round the ear for my trouble."

The vampire was eventually forgotten but not by the politicians. Nowadays the Internet would no doubt be blamed for corrupting the children, but back then the scapegoat was American Horror Comics.

The 'Vampire with the Iron Teeth' in Dark Mysteries No.15 (Dec 1953)
The Vampire With The Iron Teeth was taken so seriously that the UK government introduced the Children and Young Persons (Harmful Publications) Act 1955 which, for the first time, specifically banned the sale of magazines and comics portraying 'incidents of a repulsive or horrible nature' to minors.

But before we laughingly say that a vampire or creature couldn't have iron teeth lets look at the Bible: Daniel Chapter 7 Verse 7:

'After this I saw in the night visions and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly: and it had great iron teeth: it crushed and devoured its victims and trampled underfoot whatever was left/'

Perhaps the local Glasgow vicar was a little over zealous with his sermons but, whatever, it's a true story.

FBI Files On Marilyn Monroe Missing On Her 50th Birthday

Marilyn Monroe photo from Some Like It Hot
Marilyn Monroe in Some Like It Hot
Today is the 50th anniversary of the death of Norma Jeane Mortenson - June 1, 1926 to August 5, 1962 - better known as the iconic Marilyn Monroe.

Strange how the FBI files on Marilyn have 'gone missing'. I read the following in the Daily Telegraph:

"Like many of the stars of her era, Monroe's movements, relationships and comments weren't just devoured by fans - they were followed closely by the FBI. Records kept on Monroe, many of which were filed under "Foreign Counterintelligence," have intrigued many who have sought to learn more about the film star, including those who investigated her death.

In connection with the anniversary of Monroe's death on August 5th, The Associated Press has attempted under the Freedom of Information Act to obtain the most complete record of the bureau's monitoring of Monroe.

Nearly nine months later - after several requests and an appeal - obtaining a more complete record of how the FBI investigated Monroe in the months before she died have been stymied by an effort to simply find the files.

The FBI says it no longer has the files it compiled on Monroe; the National Archives - the usual destination for such material - says it doesn't have them either."

Strange that there should be such a 'cover up' - or maybe the files have gone missing by 'coincidence' - huh!

Her death remains a mystery with conspiracy theories galore. A couple I heard recently: She was killed by Bobby Kennedy, who arrived by helicopter and administered 'a drug-laced enema'. And the other is that Marilyn killed herself because she couldn't handle her lesbian urges.

The legend lives on - she will be forever young.

Maat And The 42 Principles Of Life And Death

Maat and The Egyptian Book of the Dead
Weighing of the Heart After Death
It's interesting that way before the Bible's 10 Commandments came the ancient Egyptian's version, commonly known as Maat.

Maat was the Egyptian concept of truth, balance, order, law, morality, and justice and - as was their want - was represented by a goddess of the same name. She was the personification of truth and justice. The ostrich feather worn on her head was to represent truth.

There are various versions or translations of the 42 Principles or Commandments. Here is one version:

01 Thou shalt not kill, nor bid anyone kill.
01 Thou shalt not commit adultery or rape.
03 Thou shalt not avenge thyself nor burn with rage.
04 Thou shalt not cause terror.
05 Thou shalt not assault anyone nor cause anyone pain.
06 Thou shalt not cause misery.
07 Thou shalt not do any harm to man or to animals.
08 Thou shalt not cause the shedding of tears.
09 Thou shalt not wrong the people nor bear them any evil intent.
10 Thou shalt not steal nor take that which does not belong to you.
11 Thou shalt not take more than thy fair share of food.
12 Thou shalt not damage the crops, the fields, or the trees.
13 Thou shalt not deprive anyone of what is rightfully theirs.
14 Thou shalt not bear false witness, nor support false allegations.
15 Thou shalt not lie, nor speak falsely to the hurt of another.
16 Thou shalt not use fiery words nor stir up any strife.
17 Thou shalt not speak or act deceitfully to the hurt of another.
18 Thou shalt not speak scornfully against others.
19 Thou shalt not eavesdrop.
20 Thou shalt not ignore the truth or words of righteousness.
21 Thou shalt not judge anyone hastily or harshly.
22 Thou shalt not disrespect sacred places.
23 Thou shalt cause no wrong to be done to any workers or prisoners.
24 Thou shalt not be angry without good reason.
25 Thou shalt not hinder the flow of running water.
26 Thou shalt not waste the running water.
27 Thou shalt not pollute the water or the land.
28 Thou shalt not take God’s name in vain.
29 Thou shalt not despise nor anger God.
30 Thou shalt not steal from God.
31 Thou shalt not give excessive offerings nor less than what is due.
32 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s goods.
33 Thou shalt not steal from nor disrespect the dead.
34 Thou shalt remember and observe the appointed holy days.
35 Thou shalt not hold back the offerings due God.
36 Thou shalt not interfere with sacred rites.
37 Thou shalt not slaughter with evil intent any sacred animals.
38 Thou shalt not act with guile or insolence.
39 Thou shalt not be unduly proud nor act with arrogance.
40 Thou shalt not magnify your condition beyond what is appropriate.
41 Thou shalt do no less than your daily obligations require.
42 Thou shalt obey the law and commit no treason.

The concept of maat, and the importance of living a just life was central to the Egyptians beliefs about judgement after death. This was when the dead person's heart was 'weighed' in the balance against maat (image at top of post), symbolised by the feather worn on the head of the goddess.

There are also '42 Negative Confessions' as shown below. These are taken from public domain translations made by E. A. Wallis Budge. Something similar, perhaps, to a daily repetition or check list to ensure that the person is staying on track.

Forty-Two Declarations of Purity or the Negative Confessions.

01 I have not committed sin.
02 I have not committed robbery with violence.
03 I have not stolen.
04 I have not slain men and women.
05 I have not stolen grain.
06 I have not purloined offerings.
07 I have not stolen the property of the god.
08 I have not uttered lies.
09 I have not carried away food.
10 I have not uttered curses.
11 I have not committed adultery, I have not lain with men.
12 I have made none to weep.
13 I have not eaten the heart [i.e I have not grieved uselessly, or felt remorse].
14 I have not attacked any man.
15 I am not a man of deceit.
16 I have not stolen cultivated land.
17 I have not been an eavesdropper.
18 I have slandered [no man].
19 I have not been angry without just cause.
20 I have not debauched the wife of any man.
21 I have not debauched the wife of [any] man. (repeats the previous affirmation but addressed to a different god).
22 I have not polluted myself.
23 I have terrorised none.
24 I have not transgressed [the Law].
25 I have not been wroth.
26 I have not shut my ears to the words of truth.
27 I have not blasphemed.
28 I am not a man of violence.
29 I am not a stirrer up of strife (or a disturber of the peace).
30 I have not acted (or judged) with undue haste.
31 I have not pried into matters.
32 I have not multiplied my words in speaking.
33 I have wronged none, I have done no evil.
34 I have not worked witchcraft against the King (or blasphemed against the King).
35 I have never stopped [the flow of] water.
36 I have never raised my voice (spoken arrogantly, or in anger).
37 I have not cursed (or blasphemed) God.
38 I have not acted with evil rage.
39 I have not stolen the bread of the gods.
40 I have not carried away the khenfu cakes from the Spirits of the dead.
41 I have not snatched away the bread of the child, nor treated with contempt the god of my city.
42 I have not slain the cattle belonging to the god.

So we have 42 Principles and Declarations from the Egyptians. Perhaps this is how the number has moved into popular culture as The Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, for example. There are many other examples where 42 has been used, but I'll leave it there for today.

The Devil Or Alien Photo And Montezuma Castle

As regular readers will know I have been going through lots of my photos from the past 25 years.

Amongst the loose photos I came across the one above - but what the heck or who is it? The nearest pics to it were from my USA visit, including Montezuma Castle, as photo below.

The top photo appears, perhaps, to be a person or 'thing' with another young person of 'thing' holding on to it's face. It's probably just - well I don't know what, but when a friend said it looked like the devil this gave me the creeps!

It's no doubt just some simple photo blip of some sort, but thought it might be of interest to readers.

As for Montezuma Castle this was first thought to be Aztec in origin. It's on the I-17  south of Flagstaff on the way to Phoenix.

The castle, which isn't really a castle, was later found to have been built by the Sinagua farmers in the early 12th century.

To quote Wikipedia:

"The monument is not at all a castle, but remains to be named 'Montezuma Castle', despite it having nothing to do with Aztec Empire nor being named after any Montezuma emperors, such as Montezuma (spelled more properly 'Moctezuma')."

There's no mention of any devil (or aliens) being in residence!

Receiving Jewels And Other Gifts From The Invisible World

Jewels found with a tele-transporter

When I was much younger I liked to experiment with mind and psychic powers, telepathy, precognition and all sorts of similar stuff. My motto was 'If you don't try, you don't know.'

Instead of saying something was crazy or stupid I'd have a go - which took me down some strange paths.

One I remembered this morning was using a tele-transporter. My reminder was the two 'jewels' pictured in the photo above.

I'll tell you what this is all about if you promise not to laugh or mock!

I read about the tele-transporter in a book, the title of which or the author, is long forgotten.

You have to make this important piece of equipment yourself out of a sheet of card. You simply curl up the card to make the funnel like creation as I've tried to sketch below. And that is your fully formed tele-transporter!

tele-transporter

With this you can get in touch with the invisible world where all things are possible.

The book I read suggested readers should start off by requesting jewellery or diamonds from the aforementioned invisible world.

And this is what you do.

I have to say that some things are best done in private, using a tele-transporter is one of them! Otherwise you will be ridiculed by whoever catches you at it - the transporting, that is.

You write out something like the following on a sheet of paper or card:

"Bring me jewels beyond description. Bring me diamonds, rubies and emeralds. May they come to me from the invisible world. Bring me necklaces, bracelets, brooches, made of gold and valuable stones. In the name of creation I direct the invisible forces to fulfil my request. In the beginning was the Word."

Now look through the widest end of the funnel and read the words, preferably aloud, that you have written.

You can, of course, use your own wording - and for absolutely anything. I remember the book said that the tele-transporter was like a magnifying glass and would concentrate the words at speed to the invisible world.

Okay, I felt a bit stupid doing this, but I gave it a try.

Believe this as you will, but the very next day I found the two objects, as at the top of this post. Both had jewels and were definitely 'beyond description' as I have no idea what they are.

It looked like my tele-transporter was working. I therefore gave it another go. That weekend I went to visit my mother and by 'coincidence' she decided to give me my grandad's old fashioned gold and silver tie pins.

Again the tele-transporter seemed to work.

I tried a couple more times and nothing happened, perhaps my belief had dwindled. I then forgot all about this until I came across the two jewelled objects in a box.

Nowadays I probably wouldn't try such a thing as the tele-transporter - though I believe fully in visualisation. And really that is what the tele-transporter is - visualisation dressed up in a new hat.

The power behind such things is there and does work. If you say it doesn't it's because you haven't tried - go on, I dare you to make a tele-transporter!

Photos Which Act As A Pick-Me-Up

Yosemite National Park

I've been going through loads and loads of old photos of holidays and places we have visited over the last twenty-five years. This brought back floods of memories - good memories.

I noticed that doing this - there was a reason - made me feel quite buoyant and uplifted. It's true that there were a few photos of family and friends who have now passed on which made me sad - but the times associated to the pictures were all positive. They were of happy occasions.

The photo at the top of the post is of the Yosemite National Park, USA. We did a tour in a hire car of the west coast, a while back, taking in San Francisco, Yosemite, Los Angeles, Hollywood, Monterey, Las Vegas, Phoenix, the Grand Canyon, Palm Springs and lots of places in between.

Wonderful memories, but so were pictures of places quite nearby to where we live. When we first got together Karin and I went to West Bay on England's south coast - camping in a tent. We didn't have much money but had lots of laughs.

One night we walked from our tent to the local pub for a few drinks. It wasn't over filled with people but had a nice atmosphere. This youngish woman came over, sat opposite us and struck up a bizarre conversation. She kept staring at me and after a while said she felt she had to sing Amazing Grace to me! Would it be okay?

I don't think it mattered to her what my reply would be as she started to sing anyway. It was one of those surreal moments that will never be forgotten. She sang Amazing Grace in full, with quite a pleasant voice, then said 'thank you' and walked away, never to be seen by us again.

But what I'm eventually getting around to saying is that photos can be a natural pick-me-up or tonic.

A study was carried out by researchers at the University of Southampton. They found that the nostalgia of looking through photos, of happy times,  increases self-regard, social bonds and positivity.

Other research at UK's Open University had similar findings. They found that listening to music and such things as eating chocolate left moods unchanged. Alcohol and watching television altered moods slightly, but only by one per cent. But looking at photos from the persons own albums made people feel more than 11 per cent better.

Dr Peter Nash said of the findings, "Looking through photos has a far more beneficial effect than many traditional ways of unwinding."

So there you go. Feeling a bit down or in a bad mood? Then reach for your photo albums.
