This Coincidence Must Have Knocked Six Bells Out Of Him

Six Bells Chiddingly
Six Bells Pub Chiddingly
Back to coincidences today - a short story, but nevertheless quite remarkable. From a Mr.Andrews from England.

Years ago my wife, me and our three children lived in a tiny Sussex Village called Chiddingly, near the popular pub, the Six Bells. My two sons, Christopher and Edward, cut their 'beer teeth' there in their late teens.

After leaving university Christopher went on a gap year around the world. One evening, while skiing in a remote part of the New Zealand mountains, he booked into a YMCA to secure a bed for the night.

Just before lights out, an exhausted skier came in and took the last remaining bed, the one next to Christopher.

Who was it? The head barman from the Six Bells! The odds must be a million to one.

Devil's Advocate: Doubts About Life After Death

There have been several articles in the UK media showing that the number of people who believe in life after death has increased. It's now at about 74% according to surveys - and this is despite the numbers of people going to church, and being involved in religions has declined considerably.

I have always believed in life after death, but let's play devil's advocate for a change.

In 2012 I had surgery. I was under the influence of anaesthetic from 8.30 am until about 4.30 pm. I have no memories at all for that eight hour period: I had no dreams, no mystical visitations or experiences from loved ones, I didn't leave my body or feel myself floating about and so on. My body was functioning but otherwise, for all intents and purposes, I was nothing at all. 'I' wasn't existing anywhere, the 'me' that is my thoughts, memories and experiences didn't exist.

So was that eight hour period identical to death? All that's left of us are the memories we have left behind and the influences we have sown in our children and surroundings.

But there again from my cuttings ...

After my mother passed away, I saw a light appear, which came closer and closer and got much brighter. Then her face appeared, surrounded by a dazzling light.

It was all very clear. She was just looking at me; then it started to fade before disappearing. I was obviously very shocked. I am not religious at all.

My mother experienced the same thing when her father passed away, which did make me feel better about it. She never told anyone else about that except me.

~ John Williamson

... but that could have been imagination, stress etc.

King Arthur's Burial Place At Glastonbury Abbey

Glastonbury Abbey

The photo above shows some of  the ruins of Glastonbury Abbey. It is said that the famed King Arthur was buried here. To quote a sign nearby:

THE SITE OF KING ARTHUR'S TOMB
In the year 1191 the bodies of
King Arthur and his Queen were
said to have been found on the
south side of the Lady Chapel.
On 19th April 1278 their remains were
removed in the presence of
King Edward I and Queen Eleanor
to a black marble tomb on this site.
This tomb survived until the
Dissolution of the Abbey in 1539.

Glastonbury Abbey was founded in the 7th century and enlarged in the 10th. It was destroyed by a major fire in 1184 but subsequently rebuilt, and by the 14th century had become one of the richest and most powerful monasteries in England.

The abbey was suppressed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries under King Henry VIII of England. The last abbot, Richard Whiting (Whyting), was hanged, drawn and quartered as a traitor on Glastonbury Tor in 1539.

Pilgrimage To Glastonbury Tor

Glastonbury Tor

We were in Glastonbury last week and went to the top of Glastonbury Tor. Quite a climb but wonderful views from the top - where it's possible to see three counties - Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire - if the weather permits.

Climbing up Glastonbury Tor

The Tor is seen as a sacred pilgrimage by many, and there are legends attached to the area ranging from King Arthur and Avalon and to those who believe the Holy Grail is buried somewhere on the Tor.

St Michael's Tower, Glastonbury Tor

The word Tor has a Celtic origin meaning hill. The conical shape of the Tor is natural - due to it's rocks. It is made up of horizontal bands of clays and limestone with a cap of hard sandstone.

Inside St Michael's Tower, Glastonbury Tor

The Tor has been a place of pilgrimage for over 10,000 years. On the summit is St Michael's Tower, part of a 14th century church which had been destroyed by an earthquake in 1275.

The second church lasted until the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539. At this time the Tor was the scene of the hanging of Richard Whiting the last Abbot of Glastonbury.

Meeting On The Falkland Islands Coincidence

Falklands

Here's a quick coincidence example I came across by Gill Merrick from Leicestershire in England.

When my husband was an Army Officer in the Falklands in 1983, he called at a local shop. The woman behind the counter was an expat, originally from a small village in Leicestershire, and had married a retired Army colonel who was now a dentist.

To his astonishment, it was our village, and our eldest daughter was a dental nurse and was getting a lift with the same man to work. When he told her his surname, she said: "My neighbour's daughter married a Geoff Merrick" - my husband's brother! It is a small world.

An Unexpected Link With My Mother

Victorian Birthday Book

A couple of weeks ago I was sorting through a case I have containing bits and pieces from my parents and grandparents. Somehow, when I had finished with the case, this old book got left behind. It's been languishing on my desk ever since.

It's a Birthday Book which belonged to my maternal grandmother.

Today (I'm writing this on the 22nd of March) my computer was doing an update. While I was waiting I picked up the book wondering if there was an entry for this particular date. There was: It read: "Winnie started work at Blacks."

The coincidence is that Winnie (Winifred) is my mother and this was the day she started work after leaving school at 15. Sadly mum died in 2005 at the age of 93. I had been thinking about her recently and then this pops up!

A sad thing is that I don't know who 'Blacks' were. It's something that never came up in conversation and I never asked what her first job was.

Against every date in the little book are quotations. Against the 22nd of March this is the entry:

The heights by great men reached and kept
Were not attained by sudden flight
But they, while companions slept
Were toiling upward in the night
~ Longfellow

By another coincidence Longfellow was my mother's favourite poet. She had a book of his complete works, which I have mentioned previously.

Strange the links that always remain with us.

Infinite Oneness And Limitless Freedom

Monarch Way, Glastonbury

While I was away, last week, I picked up a free advertising magazine, The Oracle, in Glastonbury. It was mostly adverts for therapies, retreats, herbs, massage, shiatsu, acupuncture and so on. There was, however, an article, that may appeal to some readers.

Well how about entertaining this notion? When we sleep, we drop the density and leave our physical bodies, refocussing in the higher dimensions of our Divinity!

Just like the pre-birth state, we are aware of ourselves in infinite oneness and limitless freedom. When we return to our physical vehicles in the morning, we arrive back in our lives, nourished and cleansed, without the inconvenience of infant-hood and teens to go through! It is a daily rebirth and if it wasn't so ordinary and reliable for most of us, we might recognise what a powerful opportunity it is to enjoy the reset.

That time just after awakening is such a potent time to choose what story line you choose to live. If you reach for enjoyable thoughts, revel in your quiet time, breathe light, colour, grace or peace into your cells before attempting to find your place in your story, then you will set yourself off to a good start.

When times have been tough, reaching for simple and general appreciations will serve you best, like enjoying your breath, the warmth of the bed, the dawn light creeping in ... if you feel good enough sit up and write in a journal your aims of your day ... I welcome ... I call in more ... I am ready for ...

Simply put, if it feels good, then your attitude, thoughts and choices will lead you into more good ... only by bringing loving attention to ourselves can we course correct towards our pleasure and well being.

The Legend Of The Glastonbury Thorn And Joseph Of Arimathea

The Holy Glastonbury Thorn

The thorn tree in the photo above may not seem very interesting, especially at this time of year, but this is the Glastonbury Thorn in the grounds of Glastonbury Abbey. Here's why it is special:

The legend tells of how Joseph of Arimathea came to convert the English to Christianity, bringing with him with the Holy Grail. On arriving at Glastonbury - at Wyrral Hill - he leant on his staff in prayer, whereupon the staff took root. This was taken as a sign that Joseph should settle in the area and start a religious house.

The Glastonbury Thorn on a UK postage stamp
The holy thorn on Wyrral Hill was destroyed during the English Civil War (1642–1651) but by this time a cutting had been made, from the original thorn, and placed in the grounds of Glastonbury Abbey - where it remains to this day.

The story of the thorn was first mentioned in an early sixteenth-century metrical Lyfe of Joseph of Arimathea.

There is also a legend that as a child Jesus visited Glastonbury along with Joseph.

Batteries Re-Charged At Glastonbury

Old solid door of an 1890 Sunday School

We have just got back from spending some time in the Somerset village of Wookey Hole. One of the reasons we chose this was because it was near Glastonbury and also Wells (England's smallest city). A good place to charge the batteries - physical and spiritual :-)

We arrived a little early, so had to wait before we could pick up the key to our accommodation - an old Sunday School (1890) conversion.

Somerset bus
We wandered through the village and I was wondering if we had chosen the right place to stay. Then I saw that the local bus - which ends it's run at Wookey Hole Village - had the number '67' - 67 obviously has links to my blog name. "Ah, a good omen," I thought.

We walked a little further and a brewery lorry pulled up outside the local village pub and hotel. The lorry was delivering 'St.Austell' beer. The actual brewery is in Cornwall, near to where I live - so a home from home. Another omen perhaps, or even a second coincidence.

St.Austell brewery lorry
After a short while it was time to collect the key to our accommodation. The first room, strangely, nearest the main entrance was the bathroom. On the inside of the old solid door were two hooks, originally taken from when it was once a Sunday School. Each had a number: 33 and 61. I immediately realised that 3+3= 6 and 6+1=7. So another 67!

So three omens / coincidences that ensured we had the perfect place to stay! More on Glastonbury and Wells to come.

Telepathy Between Husband And Wife

Telepathy

British author Rosalind Heywood wrote a lot about telepathic communication between herself and her husband. During the 1930s for example, before the telephone was quite so available, if her husband was at his employment - where he wasn't allowed to make outgoing calls - and he wanted to speak to her, he would send a mental image for her to telephone him. This appears to have worked successfully.

Sometimes though the telepathy worked without messages being consciously sent.

During the 1939-45 war her husband was employed by the British War Office and would return in the dark late at night. In her own words:

One November evening my mother and I were sitting quietly together after tea and I broke the silence by saying, "Frank has no torch. I must take him one to the station."

My mother was none too pleased. "He always takes a torch," she protested. "It's absurd to walk all that way in the rain for no reason at all."

I did not want to annoy her yet the conviction that my husband needed a torch to get home in the blackout was strong enough to make me brave her protests - and the weather - and walk to the station.

It was worth it. On getting out of the train he exclaimed spontaneously, "I am glad to see you. My torch gave out as I left the War Office and I wasn't at all looking forward to the long walk in the dark without one."

I do not remember ever having taken such apparently irrational, not to say inconvenient, action when it was needed.

Rosalind Heywood felt that when her husband's thoughts and feelings were not directed towards her she wasn't aware of them, unless they were accompanied by a spurt of emotion. When his thoughts were directed to her, as in the case of when he wanted her to telephone him, less emotional fuel was needed.

It's an interesting subject and I guess a lot of us, who have been with our spouses or partners for a while, do find it easier to exchange thoughts. As for being powered by emotion this rings true in so many cases.

Did Her Husband Send Her Crosses Of Light From Heaven?

Light crosses

See what you think of this, something I saw in the Toledo Blade archives.

Death visited Jerry Andrews one sunny Saturday afternoon on an Arkansas State Highway. Killed in a one car accident, Andrew's untimely passing left his wife, Darlene, praying for a sign to assure her Jerry was safe in heaven.

A miracle in the image of several bright and multi-coloured lights shaped like crosses visited the Andrews family that same afternoon.

Since that fateful Saturday crosses have appeared in both a large picture window and a small window in the front door of Andrews' Wynne, Arkansas home. "As soon as I saw it, all my pain lifted," said Mrs Andrews.

Thousands of people from Wynne and surrounding areas have visited the Andrews home on Crabb Lane to view the apparitions. Cars still line the suburban street as the curious patiently wait their turn to sse a miracle appearing in their neighbour's living room.

For a God fearing community in the buckle of the Bible Belt, miracles are worth a wait. After seeing the crosses, people leave quietly and keep opinions of the images' authenticity to themselves. No one, however, has been able to expose the incident as a hoax.

The crosses are visible only from inside the house, an external light source has been ruled out because the crosses are brightest at night. The images appear when the lights are off inside the house as well.

Whether the crosses are a sign from above that Jerry Andrews is safe in heaven, or merely a previously unnoticed phenomenom remains a puzzle. That Darlene Andrews noticed the crosses when she did may only be a coincidence, but, would it really take great powers of observation to see crosses shining in your front window when you turned the lights off? The Nightmare And The Number 2

Nightmares, night terrors

A while back I had been reading about people who have, what I would call, nightmares. These are ones which feature a dark or black cloaked figure, usually thought of as being male.

I read of dozens of similar cases where this figure is often in the corner of the room or sometimes floats above the person having the 'nightmare'. Most describe the figure as being evil. One woman wrote, "It reeks pure evil and I just know it’s there to hurt or kill me. I have never felt such fear in all my life."

Another woman told of how, "I find myself sitting straight up screaming. Should my husband try to grab my arm or wake me up, it just makes it worse. I have kicked, scratched and hit him. He's a 250 pound man and I only weigh 120 but I have kicked him clear off the bed and onto the floor thinking he was someone trying to attack me."

blue number 2What made me write about this is, because of something I read about the number 2 in association with such an experience, an example being:

"Also for some reason the number 2 seems to play a prominent role, with some dreams starting with me fixated over the impression that I am surrounding with a great number of people before that number becomes divided down into two, as in me and the presence."

I have only ever had one nightmare in myself. It was as a child of 4 or 5 but is still imprinted on my mind. I dreamt that I was being chased by the number 2! I remember my mother afterwards telling me how I was standing up in my bed pointing to the corner of the room where I was insistent that a number 2 was coming to get me. To this day, I can still remember how terrified I was of that number 2.

Fortunately, though, I have nothing against the number 2 nowadays!

It's fascinating though, how many people have dreams / nightmares / night terrors about evil dark figures and how sometimes a number 2 is involved.

Coincidence: 8000 Miles From Home He Found His Father's Friend

Royal Navy Barracks, Singapore
Royal Navy Base Singapore 1945-1971
Here's another coincidence I saw in the Daily Mail, dated the 3rd of March, it's from a Charles Lawson from Hampshire, England.

It is 1966 in the cash office of HMS Terror, the Royal Navy barracks in Singapore.

During a work break, a young sailor recently arrived from the UK mentions that his father, who had been in the Navy, had asked him to look out for a friend in the service with whom he had lost touch.

The young sailor gives some information about his father, at which point the chief petty officer in charge of the office asks him a few questions. On confirmation of the answers, the young sailor is told his father's friend has been found! He is even told he had, in fact, been bounced on the friend's knee when he was young.

In 1966, the Navy had a large fleet of ships and shore bases positioned throughout the world, but he landed in the one place he needed - 8000 miles away.

~ Charles Lawson

HMS TERROR:
In line with Royal Navy's tradition of naming their respective naval base and dockyard, the accommodation barracks adjacent to the Singapore base became known as HMS Terror (from 1945 to 1971) in honour of HMS Terror, an Erebus-class monitor armed with twin 15-inch guns, which was based at one time in Singapore before the war. Foreign Accent Syndrome: Her Migraine Gave Her A Chinese Accent

A change of subject today. It's all about how a woman's migraine left her with a Chinese accent!

Sarah Colwill, from England, had several very severe migraine headaches. They were so bad that she was forced to call for medical assistance. When the paramedics arrived her voice sounded strange and then she realised it was a Chinese accent!

Sarah said, "I have never been to China. I just want my own voice back but I don't know if I ever will."

She continued to say that at first her friends hung up on her when she tried to phone them as they thought it was a practical joke.

What Sarah has is known as Foreign Accent Syndrome and this is normally brought about by a head injury or a stroke. This was slightly different in her case, though she has suffered from severe migraine's for over ten years.

The 'experts' say it's all down to damage to the brain in the area that controls linguistic functions.

Some even reckon it's a case of pareidolia. To quote Wikipedia "This is a psychological phenomenon involving a vague and random stimulus (often an image or sound) being perceived as significant. Common examples include seeing images of animals or faces in clouds, the man in the moon, and hearing hidden messages on records played in reverse." Can't really see this myself.

Seemingly there have been about 50 reported similar cases since Foreign Accent Syndrome was identified in the 1940s.

One of the first reported was in 1941 when a young Norwegian woman developed a German accent after being hit by bomb shrapnel during a World War II. She was subsequently shunned by her friends and neighbours who thought she was a German spy.

There is a recent report which takes the language a step further. The respected Telegraph newspaper tells the story of a Croatian 13 year old girl who was in a coma. On waking up she could no longer speak Croation, but could speak perfect German.

Okay, so the experts say they know the reason for Foreign Accent Syndrome, but lets throw something else into the melting pot: xenoglossy.

Xenoglossy is the ability to be able to speak an unknown and unlearned language. Sometimes this can happen in past life regressions and mediumship.

A well known case is that of a Hindu girl Swarnlata Mishra who was born in 1948. She began to sing Bengali songs and perform Bengali dances without ever experiencing the Bengali language or culture.

To Swarnlata the reason for this was simple: she believed she had been taught the songs and dances in a previous life.

It's a funny old world - there are many mysteries that are so easily explained away by those so called 'experts'. But who is really right?

Stephen King And The Pet Cemetery Coincidence

Stephen King's Pet Sematary

Jim and Jean Holley are big Stephen King fans, and strange coincidences or connections happened when they started looking for a new home. The Realtor said she had found the perfect house for them. The house, which they immediately liked, was located in Talisman Drive, a name used in one of King's best selling novels.

Jean Holley told the Times Daily, "The Talisman had just been released and it was an eerie coincidence that the street would have the same name."

She said that the address always elicited a surprised response from those who knew of the family's fascination with the author. But a further coincidence was also to emerge.

The Holleys discovered the existence of a pet cemetery behind their home! As they explained:

"First there's this Talisman thing and then, to find a cemetery where both pets and people were buried, was really intriguing. The gravestones had been removed from the property so there was no indication of a cemetery being here when we moved in.

"But we noticed that all the other houses had long, deep lots and ours didn't. We started talking to our neighbours and they told us about the cemetery. They said there was an old family cemetery in our back yard where at least 28 people and their pets were buried."

In King's book Pet Sematary the word is misspelled by children and, as with the Holley's back yard, both people and pets were buried there. The family started to do some research.

Jean said: "Jim went to the library and checked old burial records, but there was no record of the cemetery or any of the people buried there. But from talking to other people we've found out more as time went on."

It seems that the cemetery, with graves dating back to the 1800s, had been bulldozed about 30 years previously.

There was still one more coincidence from when the Holleys moved into their house. Jean was surprised to find her name written in cement. She said, "Jean was written in the sidewalk and I noticed it right away. There aren't many Jeans around so that was something else that was just a little peculiar. The house had my name on it, like it was destiny."

He Was 'Told' To Read The Obituaries And Discovered Happy Memories

US Coast Guard Boat
US Coast Guard
Santa Rosa Beach: Philip Obenauer does not read the obituaries. He thinks they're morbid.

One morning, however, a voice, a feeling, something told him to read the obituaries. Almost reluctantly, he picked up the paper and saw a name he recognised: Garvis Fincher.

The two men had been stationed in the U.S Coast Guard together more than 40 years ago at a small station on Long Island. They met girls together, fished, boated and played softball.

Though he doubted it could be the same man he'd known, he also had never heard of anyone else called Garvis. Taking a chance, Obenauer called a number he found in DeFuniak Springs and left a message,

It was a message that would make Charlotte Fincher's grief at losing her husband a little lighter,

She called back and the two spoke for a long time.

"It was very uplifting," she said, "See my husband had told me about this guy, but he never mentioned his name. He just said he was a good friend in the Coast Guard,"

"When he called, it was just a strange experience," She added, "It was almost a way of Garvis being in touch with me."

After they chatted, Obenauer offered to send her a photo he'd found of himself and Garvis.

The house she and Garvis had previously built in DeFuniak Springs was hit by lightning and burned, destroying all of his pictures.

Charlotte was surprised by how close the two had lived to each other without ever knowing.

Obenauer was glad he got a chance to say goodbye to the friend with whom he shared so many good times. He believes it was more than a coincidence that he read the obituaries that day.

He recalled, "Before Charlotte called back, it was a beautiful sunset that night, an orange and blue sky, and I said, 'Garvis, I don't know how you did it, but your reached me after all these years!'"

The Scary Noises And Happenings At Night - When Jenny Was All Alone

Lightening

Strange happenings from Jenny today: noises, things falling down and and perhaps some sort of telepathic connection with her sister. See what you think.

I was home alone one night, my parents being on vacation and my sister was staying late at a friend's house.

While making some food for myself I heard a big noise, like something falling over upstairs. I checked things out and nothing seemed to be wrong. I sat down in front of the TV and watched a show while I ate.

Ten minutes later I heard the window blinds in the kitchen being moved. It turned out that a couple of the blinds had fallen down, but there was nothing to disturb them. The windows weren’t open or anything like that.

At this point I was getting a little freaked out and wishing so badly that my sister would come home soon. I didn’t expect she would though, since she said she would be out very late.

I put this all behind me, however, and just called it a coincidence. I told myself that if something else happened, then I would really worry (even though I was already pretty scared).

About 15 minutes later there was another huge crash came from upstairs. It sounded like my whole bookcase had fallen over, along with all of my books and figurines.

I didn't bother to check this one out. I got my keys, put on my shoes and was about to leave the house when my sister barged in through the door, obviously quite disturbed herself.

She was crying and really upset and she told me that while she was at her friend's house she had a panic attack and felt that she had to go home and fast.

She raced all the way, not really knowing why until I told her about what I had experienced.

I think we had some sort of connection that night. I honestly needed her to come home so badly, and somehow, she knew that too.

As for that last huge crash, I still don’t know what it was. Odd, because it was such a loud noise and I was expecting something pretty big to have fallen over or broken - but there wasn't anything to be seen.

Nothing like this has happened to me since then.

~ Jenny
