The Coincidence Of A Steamer Saved From A Titanic Iceberg

I have published several posts about the ship Titanic and coincidences. Here's a further coincidence story that has connections with the Titanic and it's one I haven't mentioned previously.

There was a young seaman called William Reeves. He was on watch in the bow of a steamer heading to Canada from Tyneside in north-west England. The year was 1935. The month was April - the same month of Titanic's sinking. Reeves became obsessed with thinking about Titanic's downfall. He felt some strong negative feelings about his voyage.

The thoughts of danger took shape in the seaman's mind as he remained on watch. He strained his eyes looking for any signs, but could see nothing but the gloom and darkness. He felt though that something was wrong, but couldn't say why. He felt too scared to shout out any alarm for fear of ridicule.

His feelings of doom, however, became stronger when he realized the date was April 14, the same day the Titanic sank. He risked making a fool of himself and shouted out a danger warning, The helmsman immediately rang the signal: engines full astern.

The ship churned to a halt ... just yards from a huge iceberg which towered high out of the water. There were also other icebergs crowded round the steamer. It took nine days before the Newfoundland icebreakers could smash a clear path for the steamer.

By another strange coincidence the steamer was called the Titanian.

The Coincidence Of How The Queen Elizabeth Ships Captains Both Died On The Same Day

Queen Elizabeth ship approaching New York
Queen Elizabeth ship approaching New York 1950s or 1940s
I was reading about the Queen Elizabeth ship, launched on September 27, 1938, and, guess what? I found a coincidence!

Amazingly two of the former captains of the ship died on the same day - 28th of March 1967.

Captain George E Cove, 77, died in Liverpool and Captain Sir James Bisset, who also commanded the Queen Mary, died in Portsmouth.

And strangely, the current captain at that time, Commodore Geoffrey T Mar, fell on the bridge and broke his ankle as the liner approached New York - on the very same day

So a little cluster of coincidences or synchros. I noticed them because my wife's birthday is on the 28th of March and the number 67 has associations with this blog's name,

Going back to the captains who died. I also read that James Bisset was on duty on the Cunard Liner, Carpathia, in the North Atlantic, on the evening of the 14th of April 1912, when distress calls were received from the Titanic.

The Carpathia led rescue operations until 8:30 a.m on the morning of the 15th of April when she then set sail for New York with 703 Titanic passengers aboard.

Interesting how one thing leads to another ...

Surrounded By Titanic Coincidences

Titanic Lifeboat
Titanic Lifeboat
A quick post today.

Way back in 2010 I published a post Titanic Coincidences. Following on from this Tracy told me about her own 'coincidences' or 'connections' with the Titanic. Here we go:
  • Tracy's grandmother died on the 15th of April 1984 - the 72nd anniversary of the Titanic's sinking.

  • The survivors arrived in New York on Tracy's birthday: April 18th.

  • Tracy's surname is Shipp.

  • One of the victims was a T. Beattie - her initial and previous surname.

  • Some of those who lost their lives were buried in Nova Scotia (New Scotland) Halifax, Canada. Tracy lives in a place known as little Scotland, Halifax, Canada.
We are sometimes surrounded by synchronicity without ever realising.

Violet Survived The Titanic Sinking And Three Other Ship Disasters

Violet Jessop
Violet Jessop
It's strange how some people seem to be drawn into similar situations over and over again, almost like there is some lesson to be learned. Take Violet Jessop for example.

Violet Jessop was a crew member on the Titanic and was one of the 'lucky' ones, she survived - but Violet was actually three times lucky as she also survived two other shipping disasters as well.

Firstly though, her experience with the Titanic, she wrote:

"I was ordered up on deck. Calmly, passengers strolled about. I stood at the bulkhead with the other stewardesses, watching the women cling to their husbands before being put into the boats with their children. Some time after, a ship's officer ordered us into the boat first to show some women it was safe. As the boat was being lowered the officer called: 'Here, Miss Jessop. Look after this baby.' And a bundle was dropped on to my lap."

After eight hours in the boat Violet and the others were picked up by the Carpathia:

"I was still clutching the baby against my hard cork lifebelt I was wearing when a woman leaped at me and grabbed the baby, and rushed off with it. It appeared that she put it down on the deck of the Titanic while she went off to fetch something, and when she came back the baby had gone. I was too frozen and numb to think it strange that this woman had not stopped to say 'thank you'."

Violet was also on Titanic's sister ship the Olympic when it had it's collision. To quote Wikipedia:

The Olympic's major mishap occurred on her fifth voyage on 20 September 1911, when she collided with a British warship, HMS Hawke off the Isle of Wight.

The collision took place as Olympic and Hawke were running parallel to each other through the Solent. As Olympic turned to starboard, the wide radius of her turn took the commander of the Hawke by surprise, and he was unable to take sufficient avoiding action.

The Hawke's bow, which had been designed to sink ships by ramming them, collided with Olympic's starboard side near the stern, tearing two large holes in Olympic's hull, below and above the waterline respectively, resulting in the flooding of two of her watertight compartments and a twisted propeller shaft. HMS Hawke suffered severe damage to her bow and nearly capsized.

The third disaster for Violet was aboard the HMHS Britannic, which was also a sister ship to the Olympic and the Titanic.

The Olympic hit problems on the 21st of November 1916 when it is believed she was hit by a torpedo. After a struggle the ship sunk in the Aegean Sea off the coast of Greece. The wreck was first investigated by Jacques Cousteau in 1975. There have been various explorations of the wreck over the past 30+ years.

Violet attributed her rescue from the sinking of the Britannic to her thick auburn hair. She said of her escape:

"I leapt into the water but was sucked under the ship's keel which struck my head. I escaped, but years later when I went to my doctor because of a lot of headaches, he discovered I had once sustained a fracture of the skull."

So why did Violet Jessop have to experience three ship collisions? I guess it depends on what you believe about life and why we are here.

The Darker Side Of Synchronicity

Negative synchronicity

Sometimes it's easy to forget that there can be a negative aspect to synchronicity. An example of this known to us all is the sinking of the Titanic.

The iceberg that was to be one of the causes of so many deaths was created thousands of years ago but just happened to break off from Greenland, while the Titanic was being constructed. It headed toward the North Atlantic and eventually crossed paths with the ship resulting in the deaths of so many passengers.

Had the Titanic kept to its original schedule it would not have collided with the iceberg.

So in this instance coincidences or synchronicity caused many deaths.

In his book The Power of Coincidence David Richo gives a more personal example of the dark side of synchronicity:

"You meet someone who captivates you. By synchronicity you meet up with him or her again and again. You are excited and you presume this is the force of destination.

"You believe he or she is your soul mate but in reality he or she is the trickster who takes all you have and leaves you flat. There was indeed a connection between you but it was not destiny. It was karma.

"You met him or her so you could learn something, not so you could live happily ever after.  This appears to be negative synchronicity but becomes positive when you gain knowledge of yourself from your experience, learn not to seek revenge but let go, and of course, become more careful the next time."

As with everything there are extremes: good and bad, hot and cold so likewise synchronicity can have a negative side but perhaps, as David Richo suggests, this is brought on by karma and is therefore created by our own actions.

A Ramble About 51412 Leading Nowhere

Cartoon style image
Image called 51412 by Kyunyo
I had one of those spikes of visitors to this blog over the previous weekend, the most was on Sunday when the total for the day reached 51,412.

When I looked at the number 51,412 I realised that to the left of the comma added up to 6 and to the right 7 - so 67 - a coincidence!

Was this some sort of sign I wondered? So I Googled 51412 and - well I didn't come up with very much!

Firstly the image at the top of the post. Not too sure what it represents but it's the right way up! I noticed though that the size of the picture is 1412 x 1412.

I then realised that 51412 in many countries would be interpreted as the 14th of May 2012. Being a soccer fan I remembered that this was the day Manchester City won the English Premier League for the first time in 44 years with a memorable climax to the season at their final match against Queens Park Rangers.

Also on the same day, for the Cannes Film Festival, an enormous poster of Marilyn Monroe was erected in front of the Festival Palace.

Meanwhile there were fireworks over Hamburg Harbour in Germany to celebrate its 823rd birthday.

So not too much from the number 51412 but if the 12 was taken as 1912 instead of 2012 it would be the date for the launch of the Titanic Disaster Fund. The image below shows the cover of the programme from the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London supporting the fund.

And on that note I'll end this ramble as it doesn't seem to be reaching any conclusion. I guess the glass slipper didn't fit!

Photo of Titanic sailing from Southampton

As we approach the sinking of the Titanic anniversary the media has been full of all sorts of bits and pieces, including a new television series on UK television. So I thought I'd throw in my pennyworth with a list of some of the Titanic posts which have been published on 67 Not Out. Some of these show a different angle to what is in the mainstream news.

Also Titanic pictures. The first two shown on this post you may not have seen previously. They both show the Titanic at sea, as it sailed from Southampton on the 10th of April 1912, only to hit the iceberg on the 15th of April.

The public demanded to know what caused the Titanic's sinking, as this original cartoon shows. It was titled 'The Margin of Safety Is Too Narrow!' The man holding the newspaper represents the public and he is banging on the 'Public Service" desk belonging to a man representing 'The Companies'.

Position Of The Sun And Moon Caused Titanic To Sink

Titanic in dock at Southampton April 14 1912

We are no doubt going to hear a lot about the Titanic, this being the centenary of that fateful first voyage. Researchers at the Texas State University have been doing some, well, research and have come up with a reason for the Titanic hitting the iceberg: it was all down to the moon and the sun. Some might call it fate or even very unusual celestial coincidences.

It seems that there were two very special things happening all at once in 1912.

(1) The moon had its closest approach to Earth for around 1,400 years.

(2) The day prior to the disaster was the Earth’s closest approach to the Sun.

The moon and sun being in such positions meant their gravitational pulls would have enhanced each other and this in turn would cause a Spring Tide. It was these high tides that may have moved icebergs into southbound ocean currents, where they collided with the Titanic - or was it the other way round?

The evening of April 14th, 1912 was also moonless so the Titanic's lookouts would not have seen the iceberg until it was too late to alter course.

All in all several circumstances, some would say coincidences, came together to cause the the sinking of the Titanic.

The photo shows the Titanic in dock at Southampton, England prior to it's first voyage on April 14th 1912.

The Costa Concordia Coincidences With The Titanic

Titanic My Heart Must Go On

I thought there were bound to be some coincidences, somewhere, following the tragedy of the Costa Concordia off the Italian island of Giglio - and also possibly some sort of link up to the Titanic, which sunk one hundred years ago in 1912. Now two have come to light.

Firstly there is the case of 30 year old Valentina Capuano who was aboard the Costa Concordia as it hit rocks. One hundred years earlier her grandmother was aboard the Titanic on it's maiden voyage to New York from Southampton in England.

Valentina said, "It was like re-living history, it was horrible, I was really shocked. I am still shaken up and get very upset when I think about what I've been through, I have heart palpitations."

Her grandmother, like her, survived the Titanic sinking but Valentina's great uncle was also on board, working as a waiter, and was sadly one of those who died.

The second coincidence has been told by two survivors of the Costa Concordia, Yannic and Keven Sgag. They claim that as the ship hit rocks they were listening to music in the restaurant. At that precise moment was one of the songs from the Titanic film: Celine Dion's hit My Heart Will Go On.

The brothers said they were, "... astonished by the eerie coincidence."

And for the superstitious, we must remember that the Costa Concordia sunk on Friday the 13th. It's also said that neither the Titanic or Costa Concordia were christened prior to their maiden voyages.
