Eggs On To Be A Second Coincidence

Chicken artMore eggy news. Following the box of double yolked eggs in my Eggs On To Be A Coincidence post there has been another remarkable find.

70 year old Mrs. Ann Hordon, from County Durham in England, cracked open an egg into her frying pan and it had four yolks! The chances of this happening are quoted at being 11 billion to one.

The British Egg Information Service were astounded. After they had all picked themselves off of the floor they went on to say (in unison, of course) that the record number of yolks found in one egg is nine, but four is still exceptional. Their official spokesperson added, with a cluck, "To find a quadruple yolker is a very rare phenomenon."

The egg plot thickens, whatever will happen next! Is this some sort of scrambled message from afar? Can we decipher the code ...

  1. FOUR egg yolks? Yikes. We absolutely must figure this one out. Or the next story will be about someone cracking open an egg with 8 yolks! Hey, could this be the Fibonnacci (spelling?) sequence? I'm going to check out the numbers...

  2. Nope, not fibonacci:
    By definition, the first two Fibonacci numbers are 0 and 1, and each remaining number is the sum of the previous two. Some sources omit the initial 0, instead beginning the sequence with two 1s.
    so:0 1 1 2 3 5 8 13 21 34 55 89 144

  3. What exactly is this "BEIS" to which folks report their egg phenomena?? I'm intrigued and off to google if the U.S. has an equivalent organization!

  4. Trish and Rob: The mystery continues. Nope, not the Fibonacci sequence, which is often seen in nature.

    musingegret: LOL - The purpose of the BEIS isn't really to report strange things with eggs, it's about promoting British eggs. But it's a place to get a quote (about eggs, of course!)

  5. Well the American Egg Board must be the BEIS equivalent; they trademarked the phrase "incredible edible egg"! (Learn something every day!)

    But alas in their Press Room they don't have **any** human/chicken interest stories about multiple-yolked eggs. So Mike....it's all up to you to keep us informed on egg anomalies! ;-)
