Stripping at Airport Security
A still from the CCTV footage from Manchester Airport
Not too serious today. It's a sort of follow-up to my post Nudity At Airport Security in which I was moaning about airport security. I suggested, with tongue in cheek, that, "If we all had to strip off it would make going through airport security a bit more interesting." And it looks like someone thought this a good idea!

Kelly Hadfield-Hyde, 50,  was on her way to Malaga via Manchester Airport and first had to go through the annoying security procedure. She had placed her belt and coat into the tray for scanning and claims a security guard, Abdullah Mayet, pointed at her and said, "Off."

From the CCTV
She went on to say: "I said to him, 'Do you mean just my jacket?', but he was saying, 'Off, off, all off.'"

So that's what Ms Hadfield-Hyde started to do! She began taking off her clothes, only stopping once she had removed her bra.

We know all of this because the incident was caught on CCTV cameras and Ms Hadfield-Hyde had to explain her actions to Magistrates in Trafford. She and a friend, who also started to undress, were arrested and charged with the public order offence of causing a disturbance.

In court she accused the security guard of having a poor command of English. Mr Mayet told magistrates that his instructions had been clear and he had never asked the women to strip completely.

As I think most of us know, you can't win against airport security. The outcome was that Hadfield-Hyde was found guilty. She was given a £55 fine, ordered to pay a £20 victim surcharge and £850 costs. Her friend, Ann Chadwick, was given a conditional discharge for 12 months and ordered to pay £500 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

So there we go, if we all stripped off at airport security there wouldn't be these sort of misunderstandings!

  1. I don't think she should have lost that case. After all, he did say, "... all off."
