The Remarkable Coincidence Of The Seventh Child Of A Seventh Child

Horse number 7

A short oddity coincidence story which made me smile. This is a letter from Arthur Clancy to the author Arthur Koestler following the publication of his book The Roots of Coincidence.

lucky number 7 seven"I was born on the seventh day of the week, seventh day of the month, seventh month of the year, seventh year of the century.

I was the seventh child of a seventh child, and I have seven brothers; that makes seven sevens.

On my 27th birthday, at a race meeting, when I looked at the race card to pick a winner in the seventh race, the horse numbered seven was called Seventh Heaven, with a handicap of seven stone. The odds were seven to one. I put seven shillings on the horse. It finished seventh."

The seventh son of a seventh son is a concept from folklore regarding special powers given to, or held by, such a son. The seventh son must come from an unbroken line with no female siblings born between, and be, in turn, born to such a seventh son - source Wikipedia.

Coincidences Aren't Always What We Think!

1950s policeman on traffic duty

This cutting from a newspaper made me smile - coincidences aren't always what we think!

Stories of people meeting up by coincidence reminded me of the time I was a police officer on Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire [England].

Doing point duty in the town centre, I was suddenly surprised to see walking on the pavement towards me an old friend whom I'd not seen for many a year. He was wearing clerical clothes and a dog collar. Such was my amazement, I left the traffic control and went to meet him.

Although I was in uniform, he recognised me immediately and we greeted each other enthusiastically. We chatted and it was obvious what I was now doing, while he told me he had just been appointed as the new curate if the local Church of England church.

We then got around to finding out when and where was the last time we'd seen each other, Therein lies the coincidence.

We went through our entire lives from school days, military service and civilian occupations. It was then that we both had to acknowledge the fact that we had never actually met each other before - at least not in this lifetime!

A Weaver Stung By A Weever Coincidence

Weever fish

With Christmas approaching fast, nothing too serious today - a coincidence, well sort of!

On a beautiful sunny day John Weaver took to the water on the lovely Gower peninsular at Caswell Bay in Wales.

He was having a great time until he was stung by a poisonous fish - and it was a weever fish.

Okay, a slightly different spelling to John's surname but still a coincidence and it made the chief lifeguard smile. He said, "While everyone concerned saw the funny side of this story, weever fish stings can be very painful. The regular treatment is for the foot to be immersed in as hot water as the casualty can tolerate, for up to 20 minutes. If necessary, they may have to endure another 20 minutes in hot water to take the poison out of the foot."

It seems that the chances of being stung by a weever fish are actually very small but there was another victim that day: Dan Weaver - yes, John's son. He too was stung by a weever fish.

And how many other victims were there that day? Well none. In fact the lifeguards had no other incidents to deal with all day - other than those two weavers being stung by a weever!

The Dog Who Can Count Geese

goose story

Here's a story to make you groan!

A farmer and his dog, Shep, had a very close bond.

After the farmer had finished his plowing one day, the farmer and Shep stopped at a roadside tavern for the afternoon gathering. The farmer began bragging about Shep.

"Shep's the smartest dog, ever," he said. "He's especially good at arithmetic."

Someone said that was nonsense. However, the farmer, to prove how smart Shep was, sent him out to count the geese on the pond.

"Woof, woof, woof, woof woof" Shep said when he returned.

The farmer said Shep counted five geese. They looked outside and sure enough, there were five. They told the farmer it was just a coincidence.

"Shep, go count the geese again," the farmer said several minutes later.

"Woof, woof, woof, woof, woof, woof," Shep said when he came back.

They looked outside. Six geese on the pond! Everyone laughed at the farmer and Shep. Another lucky coincidence.

As the afternoon wore on and it was near dusk, the bartender said the farmer should have Shep count the geese again. Everyone laughed.

But Shep ran out the door and the returned with a stick. He dropped it on the floor in the middle of the tavern.

"What's that supposed to mean?" the bartender asked. "That he can find a stick?"

They all laughed again.

"It's easy," the farmer said. "He's telling you there are more geese out there right now than you can shake a stick at."

A UFO Forced Him Into The Bus Lane - So He Had To Pay A Fine!

UFO in bus lane

Here's an unusual excuse for driving in a Bus Lane.

When police caught him driving in the wrong lane he told them that he was forced to swerve into the Bus Lane to avoid a spaceship that was hurtling towards him. Yes, the old UFO excuse!

He launched an appeal about his fine and said how he would never normally stray into a bus lane, but he had to take avoidance action as the UFO approached him.

His excuse didn't impress the Southwark Council. Officials said that the camera used to record his misdemeanour did not show any UFO. He was therefore fined £120 (about USA $200).

A council spokesman said, "UFOs unfortunately do not count as legitimate reasons for overturning a fine."

A Fishy Address - Beyond The Realms Of Mere Chance

Fishing joke

A quickie story today about names that fit the situation, perhaps by coincidence.

"Years ago I was a builders' merchant in Rhyl. We had a customer named Mr Fish who lived in River Street. He used to make ornaments out of white casting plaster.

He came into my office one day, explaining that he was Mr Fish from River Street, but that he had now moved to Aquarium Street!"

Roger Harrison Jones.

I know the above is slightly different, but Carl Jung thought there may be a significance between a name and a profession. He called it 'the compulsion of a name.' An example would be, Willie Power who just happened to be the IT Leader for the Viagra manufacturers in Ireland - yes, really.

Jung reckoned that a connection between a man's name and his job, or even other peculiarities, amounted to 'gross coincidence' - something beyond the realms of mere chance.

A Chuckle And An Alarming Coincidence

Coincidence cartoon

As regular readers know I have published many coincidence stories on this blog over the last five and a bit years. So the cartoon above seems apt.

And below another coincidence story.

An alarming dream

Tonight was my ballet school's annual concert. A couple of nights ago, I was lying in bed, not quite asleep but not awake either, when I had a half-dream of the theatre being on fire.

It was on my mind for the day, not because I believed it would come true, but because I decided it'd be fun to build on it and write a short story.

Today, we drove up to the theatre, and I was dropped off outside, surprised to discover that the entire dance school was standing outside. Why? The fire alarm was going off.

It was a false alarm, and there was no fire for the rest of the night, but it was still oddly coincidental, and almost scary.

Spiritually Influenced Awful Jokes

Buddha advice on emails

Sometimes we can take ourselves much too seriously. After all, we are simply fleeting glimpses being transported on a rock hurtling very fast through space. Enough said - here's some spiritually influenced humour.

A Buddhist monk leaned over to another monk and quietly asked, "Are you not thinking what I'm not thinking?"

In the beginning there was nothing and God said, "Let there be light," and there was still nothing - but you could see it a bit better.

Reincarnation joke

"I had a dream that I was awake and I woke up to find myself asleep"
~ Stan Laurel

If you want to confuse God ask Him what his earliest memory is.

Whenever you are feeling blue, just remember to start breathing again.

Two friends meet on the street.
"Hello, how are you?"
The other ones replies: "I'm fine, thanks."
"And how's your son? Is he still unemployed?"
"Yes, he is. But he is meditating now."
"Meditating? What's that all about?"
"I'm not too sure, but it's better than sitting around doing nothing."

Funny professor clip art
An elderly philosophy professor gave a one question final exam, after a semester dealing with a broad range of topics.

The class was seated and ready to begin when the professor picked up his chair, plopped it on top of his desk and wrote on the board:

"Using everything we have learned this semester, prove that this chair does not exist."

Fingers flew, erasers erased, notebooks were filled in furious fashion. Some students wrote over thirty pages in one hour attempting to refute the existence of the chair.

One member of the class however, was up and finished in less than a minute.

Weeks later when the grades were posted, the rest of the group wondered how he could have got an 'A' when he had barely written anything at all.

His answer consisted of two words:

"What chair?"

Phone Found In A Cabbage!

Cabbage doll phone
A Sunday quickie, if you'll excuse the expression.

Seemingly a 'phone pas' is similar to a 'faux pas', except that it is committed with a phone. Usually it's something similar to when you think you have switched off the phone, but then realise the other person is still on the line and has heard the dreadful things you have said about them.

I'm not sure if the following comes under the 'phone pas' category but this is what Mrs Gibson from Scunthorpe wrote:

"When it comes to 'phone pas' can anyone beat my husband? He lost his phone in his allotment. Six weeks passed and he cut a cabbage for lunch - inside was his mobile phone. Cleaned up and recharged it's still working!"

P.S. The only image I could find suitable for the post was a Cabbage Doll Phone!

Swift Retribution For a Photobomb

Photobomb

Photobomb: An otherwise normal photo that has been ruined or spoiled by someone who was not supposed to be in the photograph. The most common photobomb is someone in the background making a face. ~ Urban Dictionary

I came across this photo on Twitter from @SegoviAira and it made me smile.

A photo was being taken of her mother so 'Sam' stood behind her in a typical photobomb pose only to find a dog also getting into the act - who started eating her ice-cream. A swift retribution.

The Coincidence And An Abundance Of Fiddle Faddle

Fiddle Faddle music

An an usual bit of fiddle faddle in the form of a coincidence or synchronicity.

Fiddle faddle 1. n. Trifling or
trivial matter(s). 2. a. petty, fussy
3. v.i. Fuss, trifle. 4. int.
Nonsense

Here's the story:

"I recall the case of my parents, when, one morning, my dad had woken early and was reading a non-fiction history book (Elizabethan period), when my mum stirred from sleep and said "Oh, fiddle-faddle" - an expression not commonly used nowadays, I would think, and never in our household.

M dad turned over and said to her, "What did you say?"

"Fiddle-faddle. Time to get up."

He showed her the words he had just read: Fiddle-faddle.

He then asked if she had peered over his shoulder to read them - which she could not have done, and in any case denied."

Fiddle faddle isn't something we hear to much nowadays, well not in England anyway, but there's more of it about than one would think.

As someone once (probably) said: 'There's plenty of everything to go round for everyone, if it was distributed and shared out fairly.' Hope you are getting your share of fiddle faddle.

The Universe Chuckling About It Raining Cats And Dogs

Raining Cats and Dogs and Pitchforks

It's Sunday afternoon here in Cornwall and the rain is pelting down as I look out of the window. The old Arthur C Clarke's Mysterious World book was on my desk. I opened it up at random to page 46 and there was the above 19th century picture - showing it raining cats and dogs - precisely what I was thinking myself!

I often using that expression, though I see that the picture is actually called 'Raining Cats and Dogs and Pitchforks!'

Strange how sometimes what you are thinking or say comes about - with absolutely no effort.

I'd also been reading in the Sunday newspaper an article about Mike Rutherford the Genesis and Mike + The Mechanics founder. He was quoted as saying how much he used to like playing polo. To quote him:

"I once nipped off to practice [polo] when I should have been in the studio, and told the band I had a dental appointment. Naturally I came off my horse and knocked out my front teeth. The next day, I turned up and the guys all asked, "What kind of dentist did you see?"

The universe likes a chuckle!

P.S. Karin just put her head round my office door and said, "Have you seen how much it's raining?" "Yes," I said, "Cats and dogs."

Who In The World Was That Guy Coincidence

Three soldiers

I came across the following coincidence story from gameoverno on Reddit. It made me smile, as you can imagine something like this actually happening.

"A friend and I had lunch with a total stranger who got in my friend's car when he was picking me up. We each assumed the guy was the other's friend whom he'd invited, but had not said anything about - and neither of us directly asked, 'So how do you guys know each other?'

The guy was nice enough and we ended up having a fine lunch with pleasant, but generally chitchat-level, conservation.

My friend called me up after he dropped us off and asked, 'Who in the world was that guy?' We then discovered our assumptions about the other knowing him were false.

We had to know why this happened, so I looked up the guy in the employee directory (I worked at the same company) and emailed him.

He replied explaining he was supposed to meet a Brian (my friend's name is Brian) who had the same colour and model car, at the same spot we picked him up and at the same time!

He thought that he'd met up with the right people until about three quarters of the way through lunch when Brian said where he worked and that didn't match with the Brian he was meant to meet."

It's A Mad World Birthday Card

First Birthday Card

It was our granddaughter's first birthday last week so we headed for the local Card Factory shop and bought her a card - though it looked a lot better than my photo!

I wrote the appropriate message on the card and as I was pushing the card into the envelope I noticed the wording on the back - as follows:

So it's a first birthday card, but is unsuitable for her until she's three years old! It's a mad world at times.

ET coincidence

Jake Dowd, 17, was preparing to light the family's log burner at their home om Temple Newsam, West Yorkshire, England when suddenly he saw the face of E.T. looking back at him. Spielberg's character had paid him a visit. Well sort of - the E.T. face was in a tree trunk he was about to burn.
