Britannia Leads To The Goddess Diana

1962 UK penny showing BRitannia

Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves!
Britons never, never, never shall be slaves.

Britannia is usually said to have been the name given to Britain by the Romans, and a figure representing this has been shown on many of the country's coins ever since. But it seems that this may not be the whole story.

It's possible that Britannia may be much older and really comes from the Phoenician goddess Barati. There is a definite similarity if we compare Britannia with Barati on coins.

1797 coin showing Britannia

The two coins above show Britannia on British coins of 1962 and 1797. Now look at a coin showing the Phoenician goddess Barati.

Coin showing goddess Barati

This is a Phoenician Barats of Lycaonia, from the third century A.D showing their goddess Barati. The illustration is from Iconium City and it can be seen that she has a Sun-Cross or St George's Cross as a shield - St George being the patron saint of England - and is the red cross part of the union or union jack flag.

White Cross, on a blue background, of St Andrew of Scotland
So the Phoenicians depicted Barati in a similar way to how Britain depicts Britannia. In Cicilia, Asia Minor Barati was worshipped as Perathea and later as Diana.

It looks possible, therefore, that Britannia and Diana originate from the same source.

On the above Early Roman British Coin (138-161 A.D) Britannia looks more like the Goddess with the shield bearing a sun cross - this emblem is seen to be the origin of the shield bearing the Union Jack which is figured in the modern representations of Britannia.

It's interesting that at the funeral of Princess Diana, her brother, Earl Spencer, stated that she was named after the 'ancient goddess of hunting'. It makes you wonder if there was a deeper meaning to her life and death than we fully realise.

I'm sure that there are links to our distant past that we are mostly completely unaware of - one day we may discover the true symbolism.

Coincidence Of The Princess Diana Poster In Paris

Diana poster in Paris

Was it a coincidence that a poster for the movie Diana was placed on the Place de l’Alma, Paris at the entrance to the tunnel where Princess Diana was killed in a fatal accident in 1997? The 6x4 feet poster is also close to the Flame of Liberty (seen to the left of the photo above) which has been unofficially adopted as a monument to Diana.

Or maybe it was a publicity stunt in bad taste?

According to enquiries made by Deadline London: "JCDecaux, the advertising agency which placed the ads, tells me it received no phone calls or complaints, but that the posters were removed at the request of French distributor Le Pacte. A spokesperson at Le Pacte confirmed the posters were removed and explained that the exact locations of posters are not hand-picked when a campaign is laid out. Given there are several thousand Diana posters around Paris right now ... the Place de l’Alma positioning was 'a coincidence'."

So officially just one big coincidence.

The poster has now been removed.

Fancy A Royal Slice Of White Toast For £500

Slice of toast from Prince Charles breakfast on day of his marriage to Princess Diana

When the auctioneer saw the slice of toast brought in to be auctioned he thought, "Crumbs!"

But this was no ordinary piece of toast, this one was distinctly upper crust.

Okay, enough of the puns. This is why the toast is going under the hammer - though not literally.

The piece of white bread toast in question is claimed to have been left uneaten by Prince Charles on the morning of his 1981 wedding to Lady Diana Spencer, later to be Princess Diana.

The Buckingham Palace maid decided to take it from the breakfast tray as a souvenir instead of throwing it away.

The maid, who because of Royal protocol cannot be named, said, "It was on a toast rack on the tray and had not been buttered. I think it was just an extra piece he didn’t need."

It is said that the toast has been stored, uncovered in a china cup on a shelf in a cupboard. Somehow it survived because the cupboard was air tight and the toast had never been buttered.

So, there we go, the toast will be auctioned by Hansons Auctioneers and Valuers of Etwall in Derbyshire on the 19th of July. It could well fetch up to £500 ($700).

Don't think I know any jokes about toast, other than these two Awful Jokes - apologies in advance.

Q: What does a slice of toast wear to bed?
A: Jammies.

Q: Why did the man throw his buttered toast?
A: Because he wanted to watch the butterfly.
