Coincidence: The Bell That Broke On The Duke Of Wellington's Death

A coincidence I came across regarding the Duke of Wellington, (1769-1852) British Prime Minister in the 1830s. The original newspaper cutting is shown below.

On the death of the Duke of Wellington the bells of Trim, near Dangan Castle, his father's seat in Ireland, for which, when a young man, Wellington had sat in the Irish Parliament, rang a muffled peal, when the tenor, a beautifully toned bell, suddenly broke.

It was found by a curious coincidence to have been cast in 1769, the year of the Duke's birth.

Northern Paiute: Native Americans

I came across and article about Native Americans from 1937. Times have certainly changed, the article was headed Pagan Custom Less Among Indians. It came to my attention because there is a coincidence of sorts. This is the article:

Paganism is gradually disappearing among Indians on the Pyramid Lake Indian Reservation, according to the Rev. William A Stinson vicar at St Mary's on the desert of the Nevada Episcopal missionary district.

"Many of the old customs still exist to be sure," he said, "but they interfere very little with our Christian teachings."

There are now 400 baptized Indians on the reservation, of whom 175 have been confirmed.

"One of the strongest of the old traditions is that of water babies," the vicar reported. "When some of the Indians tell me that the water babies were crying last night, they are really serious.

"Tradition has it that when the wind blows in off Pyramid Lake and sighs though the trees of the reservation it is the water babies crying, and something ominous is about to happen," he explained. "Superstitious Indians remain indoors when they think the water babies are about."

A similarity between religion of the primitive western tribes and the Christian religion was described by the vicar.

"It may only be a coincidence, but the older Indians have told me their ancestors used to kneel facing the east each morning as they washed their faces and would pray to the Great Spirit to cleanse their hearts as the water cleansed their faces," he said. "As you know, the altars in our churches are always placed in the east end."

"A literal translation of the Indians' tribal name is water ute derived from the name of the original Ute Indians in Utah and pah meaning water," he declared.

As I understand it, the indigenous peoples of the mentioned area are known as Northern Paiute.

The Street Urchins Coincidence

Of course, coincidences aren't a new thing. Here's an amusing vintage story from the past featuring street urchins, a high court judge and a future Archbishop of Canterbury,

As Sir Henry Hawkins, of the High Court of Justice, alighted from his coach, his judge's wig caught the top of the door and was lifted from his head. And his head was said to have looked as round and bald, as a marble.

The street urchin children, gathered in a crowd, burst out laughing, and very irreverent laughter it was.

Sir Henry had come as usual to St, Mary's, the university church of Oxford, for the special service held to mark the opening of the assizes, or court sessions.

Rev Cosmo Gordon Lang

He was met by the vicar, Rev Cosmo Gordon Lang, later the Archbishop of Canterbury. Mr. Lang, having escorted the judge to his pew, mounted the pulpit to preach the sermon he had carefully prepared. The text - of all texts - was II Kings 2: 23 which reads:

"... as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head."

When the service was over, Sir Henry remarked to the vicar, with a dry smile, "A very excellent sermon - on a very apposite text."

Vintage Photos Taken From My Google Plus Page - 11

The photo above shows part of the town where I was brought up as a child - Hayes in, what is now called, the London Borough of Hillingdon. The photos are dated 1955. Times have made changes, that's for sure. The photo below is from the same area showing red London Transport buses and a red post box.

I came across these photos by chance, they are a little hazy, but I found them interesting.

The following is from a Hayes Carnival.

By comparison next is where my wife was born in Ohrfeld, north Germany. When we visited the area about 10+ years ago we found the house had been knocked down for a main road and housing. We recovered three bricks from the site to take home - which are now in our garden.

And finally a photo of me I used for a Google+ community - several members published photos from when they were young. I think this was probably my first school photo when I was 5 - a wonky school tie and a blazer was the uniform - though the tie didn't have to necessarily be wonky!

More vintage illustrations - this time advertising. 7up for babies, surely not! But Fry's chocolate is fine, one of my favourites - especially Fry's Cream as per the picture I have added to the bottom of the ad.

And back to the hard stuff - vintage Coca-Cola. May give you extra large shoulders!

And finally for today, vintage Rowntree's Fruit Gums. I remember as a child we used to see how long we could make a gum last. Value for your pocket money that way!

The Coincidence Of Two Cars Having The Same Number

I seem to be trapped in 1950, what with all of those 1950 Flying Saucer sightings and today a news story of a coincidence from 4 April 1950. But there's no doubt worse places to be.

When the state of Pensylvania slipped up and issued two car owners the same number, it was just a coincidence that both men live in Johnstown. But Allen Koch and John Mugridge spotted the error at once. They're both employed at the veterans administration office and have adjoining spaces in the same parking!

Of course things were a bit slower with Google in 1950 - and a postage stamp was required!

Pudding Bowl Haircuts In 1951 Detroit

The following small article in the St Petersburg Times from Nov 15, 1951 made me smile.

Coincidence?

A rumoured rise in haircut prices - from $1.25 to $1.50 has virtually cleaned Detroit stores of home-style hair clippers.

Maybe it's just a coincidence, but one store also reported a shortage of head-size butter crocks.

More vintage stuff today - though the picture below isn't vintage just the keys. First though the photo above. It's from my parent's albums from 1955 - two of my aunts going off on holiday by steam train.

As for the keys, I like to think the keys are to my castle... or maybe from the old local jail. But I actually bought them - as seen in the picture - about 10 years ago from a farmer at a car boot sale. He was clearing out a barn and selling the saleable bits he had found. They cost me 50 pence! A bargain. I don't know where they originated but they are old - though the key on the right looks to be newer in style. They now 'live' on my hearth at home.

And below a vintage advertisement from the 1920s for Ideal Classic Warming - radiators. Quite a naughty ad for that period.

The painting  above is by Francis Barraud of the dog Nipper listening to a cylinder phonograph. It's called: His Masters Voice.

Below is the launch of the Bergensfjord in 1955 from the Wallsend shipyard Swan Hunter. Sadly ship building has now ceased in that area. It's interesting in the photo to see the men watching the launch high up on the girders. There weren't quite so many Health & Safety regulations back then!

Steam Packet Chancellor Livingston 1817

This weeks vintage photos and illustrations from my Google + page.

I came across the old print of the Steam Packet Chancellor Livingston (as above) recently. It states: "Built from plans drawn by Fulton for a corporation that held a monopoly of the waters of New York state for the use of steam propelled vessels."

I wasn't too sure what the photo above was all about but my Google+ friend Thex Dar thought it was a Halloween picture. He then went to the trouble of getting a selection of such photos and turned them into a video for me, which can be seen here.

The Gillette safety razor advert is quite, erm, unsettling! A child with a razor, how could they have thought that was a good idea?
