A Squirrel Question Answered By Coincidence

Squirrel on a tree

A short coincidence story, with thanks, from Nick.

My friend and I were sitting in a park having a smoke on a bench. We were talking about a television program we had seen, in which a squirrel had to decide if it was going to get eaten by a jungle snake or jump out a a tree from high up in the branches.

The squirrel jumped and I brought up the question to my pal: "Would the squirrel have died?"

Literally 15 seconds later a squirrel fell out of the tall tree, we were sitting under, and ran off.

I guess our question was answered!

The Murder Coincidences As History Repeats Itself

Barbara Forrest murder coincidenceThis is a remarkable coincidence story which features the murder of two 20 year old girls - but the killings were 157 years apart. Could this be a case of history repeating itself or maybe even reincarnation?

It was May 27 1974, a May Public Holiday, and the semi-naked body of twenty year old Barbara Forrest was found in Birmingham, England on parkland.

In the evening Barbara had been out with her boyfriend to several pubs in the Birmingham city centre. Afterwards she made her own way home by the number 67 bus while her boyfriend caught a bus to take him home in another direction.

Barbara's body was found, just 500 yards from her home, in a shallow ditch beneath bracken. A murder investigation swung into action led by Detective Superintendent Mick Lenehan.

The problem was that no one remembered seeing her on the 67 bus. It turned out that her boyfriend left her at the bus stop, but didn't see her actually get on the bus.

The work by more than 100 detectives appeared to have eventually paid off when they arrested Michael Thornton and charged him with murder.

Seven days into Thornton's trial he was acquitted. The judge ruled that the evidence against him was only circumstantial.

Mary Ashfor murder coincidenceNow we turn the clock back even further to 1817, still in Birmingham, again on the same May Public Holiday. There was another murder, that of twenty year old Mary Ashford.

Mary had been out to a pub, the Tyburn House Inn. As the evening finished she made her own way home. Her body was later found lying submerged in dirty water. She had been sexually assaulted.

A farmer was arrested for her murder. His name - Thornton. He was sent for trial and was deemed to be not guilty.

Mary Ashford was buried in Sutton Coldfield churchyard. The inscription read: "As a warning to female virtue and a humble monument to female chastity this stone marks the grave of Mary Ashford who on the twentieth year of her age having incautiously repaired to a scene of amusement without proper protection was brutally murdered on 27th May 1817."

If we look at the two murders there are many coincidences:

(1) Both Barbara Forrest and Mary Ashford had the same birth-date, though 157 years apart.

(2) They were 20 years old.

(3) They had both been sexually assaulted and then strangled.

(4) Their bodies were found in the same area - about 300 yards apart.

(5) Both bodies were found on the same day: May 27th - a Public Holiday.

(6) For both murders a man called Thornton was arrested and sent for trial.

(7) Both men were acquitted of the murders.

(8) The week prior to her murder Barbara Forrest is quoted as telling a work colleague, "This is going to be my unlucky month. I just know it. Don’t ask me why."

(9) The week before Mary Ashford was murdered she told her friend's mother that she had, "Bad feelings about the week to come".

Are these simply coincidences, as many will claim, or is there something much more to them. Did history repeat itself, maybe for a reason? Was Barbara a reincarnation of Mary? Did they both sense their deaths? There are so many questions, none of which we can answer with certainty.

The Coincidence Of The Purple Car At Woodstock

Purple car

A 67 Not Out reader's coincidence story today, which may also have a touch of telepathy involved. My thanks to Megan T. for sending this to me - appreciated.

Your site inspired me to start writing down some strange coincidences that have happened to me in the past. This one is the oddest/creepiest/coolest:

Just some background, I grew up in Kingston, NY which is about 90 miles from NYC (just for perspective) and about 10 miles from Woodstock, NY.

One afternoon about 11 years ago, a friend and I drove to Woodstock so I could buy my mom a mothers day gift. When we were done, we had nothing to do so decided on a whim to go on a nice drive near the reservoir, which was about 20 miles down the road and in the opposite direction of Kingston.

When we got there, we drove around for a bit then decided on yet another whim to go exploring in the hills behind the reservoir. We drove and drove and at one point, I looked in the rear-view mirror and thought I saw a purple car way behind us. I thought, "That's weird ... the only person I know with a purple car is Ryan," then dismissed it and kept driving and chatting with my friend.

Several minutes later a purple car went flying past us in the opposite direction. This time I could clearly see that the driver was in fact my brother Ryan, and my other brother Seth in the passenger seat. He saw me too and turned around. We stopped on the side of the road to say hi and how weird it was that we'd run into each other in such a remote, obscure place.

When I asked what they were doing way the hell out here, they said they had just left Woodstock, they were there buying mom a mothers day gift at XYZ shop (I forget the name, blame it on aging lol) and when they were done, decided randomly to go for a drive back here.

Turns out I bought mom's gift at XYZ and my brothers were in the same shop minutes after I left.

Meeting Up Thousands Of Miles From Home By Coincidence.

View from Rivington Pike
View from Rivington Pike
Here's a coincidence story from my cuttings, very short, but quite remarkable. It's from Shirley Myerscough who lives in England.

Many years ago, my cousin came to visit me from Canada.

We decided to go for a walk on the moors. We caught a bus to the nearest town and started to walk to one of the highest parts of the moors (Rivington Pike).

After a long walk, we sat on the grass near the beacon. It was a beautiful day, and we could see for miles. There wasn't a soul in sight. Then suddenly we heard a voice saying, "How can I get up there?"

I said to my cousin, "That voice doesn't sound English."

This elderly gentleman appeared. It was the minister from my cousin's church in Vancouver!

The Dead Man Who Won His Son A Large Amount Of Money - By Coincidence

A Poker Game in the 1800s

I like some of the old classic coincidence stories. How accurate they are is hard to say, as time tends to alter the tales like Chinese Whispers. Here's the story of Robert Fallon, who won his son a large some of money - but when he was dead!

playing cards gambling coincidence
Back in 1858 a Robert Fallon from England went to San Francisco and got involved in a game of poker at the Bella Union saloon. He was accused of cheating and was shot dead after winning $600.

The belief amongst the gambling fraternity was that money won by cheating was unlucky. The other players asked a passer by to take the dead man's place at the table and gave him the $600 as stake money. They thought they would have no trouble in winning back their money.

By the time the police arrived the new player had turned the $600 into $2200. The police asked for the dead man's $600 so that it could be given to Fallon's next of kin.

It turned out that the new player, plucked from the street at random, was actually Robert Fallon's son! He hadn't seen his father for over seven years.

After proving his identity the cash was his.

They Meet Up Again After 70 Years - By Coincidence

Burnham-on-Crouch, Essex, England High Street
Burnham-on-Crouch High Street, Essex
Another coincidence meeting from my cuttings by Jeff Pickard. Perhaps we are meant to reunite with some people out of the blue.

From 1945 to 1949, I attended Maldon Grammar Scool in Essex. In my first year was a Michael Letten who, like me, lived in Burnham-on-Crouch. With his brother William at the same school, we all travelled each day from Burnham-on-Crouch to Malden by bus.

On July 17, 2016, I was at Worthing Hospital with my wife, who was having an operation. While waiting for her return, I sat with about 14 people in the waiting room. A nurse appeared and called out, "Mr Letten," and an elderly gentleman raised his hand and identified himself.

Never having heard this surname since the Forties at school, I was intrigued and asked him if he had any Essex connections. He replied that he did.

I informed him that I came from Burnham-on-Crouch and had attended Maldon Grammar School with two brothers from Burnham, one of whom was in my class.

Mr Letten was surprised to say the least - he confirmed he was Michael's elder brother William and told me that Michael is now living in Dorchester.

How amazing to meet again after 70 years, Plenty of reminiscing and a meeting to be arranged.

Meeting At The Royal Albert Hall Coincidence

Royal Albert Hall, London
Royal Albert Hall, London
Here's another remarkable coincidence from my cuttings - by Brenda Wood. All of the stars must have been in the right place on the night mentioned!

Four of us - old colleagues now retired - meet once a month.

On one occasion we were discussing a certain lady we had all worked with but none of us could remember her name.

A few weeks later a couple of us went on a weekend trip to London, which included a carol concert at the Royal Albert Hall.

Halfway down the motorway my friend Joan suddenly blurted out without any warning: "Gail Trantor!" This was the name of the lady we couldn't remember a few weeks before.

When we were shown to our seats in the stalls we found that, due to leg space restrictions, we were very uncomfortable.

An attendant very kindly reseated us in a box. Looking over the balcony to the box on our left, I saw a lady that looked familiar - could it be Gail Trantor?

We quickly dismissed this as being too ridiculous a coincidence, but a few minutes later I felt a tap on my shoulder. A young girl said, "Excuse me, but my mother in the next box thinks she knows you,"

Yes, amazingly it was Gail, making a fleeting visit to London to see her daughter who lived in London.

Gail now lives in Spain. We could hardly believe it!

Long Lost Sister Found By Coincidence

Warren Tavern, Boston

A coincidence story I saw a while back in the Daily Mail newspaper from a Stephen Wright. It's quite a coincidence.

Back in 2004 I was in Boston, in the U.S., looking for The Warren Tavern, a historic inn.

Asking a young lady with a pram for directions, I recognised her accent and it turned out she used to live about 12 miles from my home in Leeds [in England].

She told me that after a career as a model she married an American, lost touch with her family in the UK, had twins and the rest was history. On that note we parted.

On my return to Leeds the following week, I was in a city bar and this man noticed I was wearing a Boston baseball cap.

I asked if he had been there. "No," he replied, "but I have a long lost sister who I think lives there."

He proceeded to tell me that, as a model, she married an American guy and decided to stay there.

I was certain that this was the girl I had spoken to, so I mentioned that she must visit, or live near The Warren Tavern and left it at that.

A few weeks passed and by chance I bumped into this man again and he told me he had managed to trace his sister from the information I had given and they were back in touch again.

He was so pleased, he bought me a drink as I recall.

Lilies Of The Valley Connect Two Friends 3,000 Miles Apart

lily of the valley
Lilies of the Valley
Now this short story, by Joy Bridle, must be telepathy surely - coincidence and telepathy appear to collide at times.

I lived in Gloucestershire [England] and my husband was in hospital having an operation for cancer.

When I was picking lilies of the valley in my garden, I thought I would call a friend of mine who lived in Maryland, in the U.S, and tell her. I phoned her and she immediately picked up the phone and said, "Hello Joy."

I said, "How did you know it was me?"

She answered, "I was picking lilies of the valley in the garden and thinking of you."

She was more than 3,000 miles away. I thought it was incredible.

Fate Or Coincidence Brings Two Friends Together Over And Over

1940s children playing

It's strange how some people seem to be part of our lives - whether we want them to be or not. Somehow 'fate' brings us into contact with someone over and over again - almost like it's meant to be - as this experience from John Hancox illustrates:

It all started in 1947. Up to the age of 11, the days began with me escaping early in the morning with my best mate who lived opposite.

We spent hours in the park, playing on the railway line or in the local wood. ending long after dark, but only if our parents could catch us.

Our friendship ended when the local council rehoused us a mile or so away. Five years later we moved to the next county and lost all contact.

At 20, I found myself crossing the parade ground of the police training centre wearing the uniform of the local county force, when I spotted my old friend coming towards me wearing the police uniform of my old county. We wasted no time in catching up, amazed at the coincidence of us both joining the police at the same time, something we had never discussed.

Off we went to start our new careers hoping to stay in touch, but we never managed it. Ten years passed, wives and children followed, until I decided to move back to the town where I grew up.

On day one, at my new police station, I saw my old mate at his desk. I said, "Well, it's great we are working together." He replied, "Not for long; my transfer to another station has come through." That was it - off he went 12 miles away. It had become a standing joke about calling round to each other's houses for a cup of tea, which we never managed to do.

A further three years passed until one day, with my back to the office door, I heard it open and that familiar voice shouted: "Don't bother coming round for a cup of tea, I have bought a house and am moving."

Taken aback, I then said: "You needn't come round my house either, as I am moving to my new house. Where are you moving to?"

He replied, "88 (naming the road) and where are you gong?"

I said, "Number 66 in the same road."

That was 36 years ago and, yes, we still live in the same street - and we still have not had that cup of tea.

The Most Gruesome Coincidence About President Lincoln

John Wilkes Booth
John Wilkes Booth
I'm going back in time today to President Lincoln's assassination. and some strange coincidences - not those well known ones, that are often regurgitated, but something different. These I found when scouring some very old newspapers.

It seems that a William J Ferguson was on the stage of Ford's theatre in Washington on the evening of the assassination - at the time he was a callboy at the Ford's. This is what was reported in a newspaper:

"The house where Mr. Lincoln was brought after the shooting, and where he died the following morning at 7 o'clock, was an actor's boarding house, to which Mr Ferguson had been accustomed to bring actors living there their 'sides' or parts,

"A peculiar coincidence connected with the house was the fact that the last time Mr Ferguson went on his usual errand, prior to the shooting, he found the actors all sitting about on the edge of the bed in which Lincoln died, and John Wilkes Booth lying in it smoking a pipe.

"Another peculiar coincidence connected with the whole affair is the fact that in the very hour that Edwin Booth, John Wilkes Booth's brother, died the front of the Ford's theatre collapsed.

"As to the story that John Wilkes Booth was burned to death or shot by the soldiers who surrounded the barn to which he fled across the Chain bridge, Mr Ferguson claims that both stories are absolutely untrue. Booth committed suicide, and, it being the final and most gruesome coincidence of all the coincidences connected with that most tragic shooting, shot himself through the base of the skull, in exactly the same place where he had shot Lincoln."

The standard explanation of Booth's death is - as per Wikipedia:

Sergeant Boston Corbett shot him [Booth]. According to Corbett's later account, he fired at Booth because the fugitive "raised his pistol to shoot" at them. Conger's report to Stanton, however, stated that Corbett shot Booth "without order, pretext or excuse," and recommended that Corbett be punished for disobeying orders to take Booth alive. Booth, fatally wounded in the neck, was dragged from the barn to the porch of Garrett's farmhouse, where he died three hours later, aged 26.

X-Ray Shows Identical Injuries To twins

Werribee, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
Werribee Park, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
I came across this coincidence in The Age newspaper. The story involves an X-ray and, as a further coincidence, minutes after I had finished writing this post, my local hospital unexpectedly phoned me to make an X-ray appointment for myself! (Just a routine check-up)

Coincidence Follows Collision

Werribee [Australia]: An X-ray examination of injuries in a recent motor accident at Wirribee by William and Henry Sadler, twins, aged 20 years, of the Metropolitan Board's farm, has revealed that their injuries are exactly the same.

Both had a broken pelvis, the breaks being identical, and internal injuries are also the same.

The twins are inmates of a private hospital at Werribee, and are making satisfactory progress. They were travelling in a motor car to Geelong when their car came into collision with another car, which had already been involved in a collision. A third person in the Sadler's car had a leg broken.

The Birth Date Prediction Coincidence

Baby clip art

A coincidence story from April - predicting a birth date, well probably!

We married two years ago and were renovating a house we had moved into. At the time I was pregnant so my husband did most of the heavy work, while I supervised! He was working in what was to be our bedroom and there was a boarded up fireplace, but the previous owners hadn't done a very good job of it.

My husband knocked in the boarded up part so he could re-plaster the area to make it all smooth with the rest of the wall. Behind the board was part of a newspaper, at the top was the date of June 23 (1970).

Nothing too strange in this but our baby was born a few months later on June 23rd. I don't know if this was some kind of prediction or an omen. We called the baby June (it was a girl!) and I'm called April. I'm pregnant again but I can't see us calling a son or daughter February!

~ April

Another coincidence for me: my mother's birthday was also the 23rd of June. Oh, and of course, that is also Brexit voting day when us in the UK vote on whether we should leave the European Union. (Yes?!)

The Fisherman's Coincidence Of All Coincidences

Fishing boat with colourful floats

Here's a mighty strange coincidence in a story from John Henderson, It all begins on a deep-sea fishing boat as it pulled away from the docks at Calabash, N.C. In his own words:

My two brothers and myself were on the boat when another boat came by, and the gentleman next to me remarked, "That sure is a coincidence." The name of the boat was 'Three Brothers'.

The gentleman, pointing to other gentleman with him said, "We're three brothers."

I said, yes, and pointing to my two brothers with me, explained that we were three brothers too.

I introduced him to my older brother, Bill, and he introduced us to his older brother, Bill.

Then I said my youngest brother's name, Bob and he said his younger brother was Bob.

I said I was the middle brother and he said, "Don't tell me. Your name is John." He was the middle brother and his name was John too.

We got talking about our families, and it came out that the wife of John in that family had suffered a stroke. Well, my wife has suffered a stroke. It's almost too much to believe, but honestly, it's a true story. It has to be the coincidence of all coincidences.

Dumbfounded By The Coincidence In A Spanish Village

Police car 1950s
1950s Police Car
Another extraordinary coincidence meeting from my cuttings. There seem to be so many such stories, that you wonder if somehow people get on the same wave length, or whatever, and decide to visit the same place at a particular time. Some links seem to never be completely broken.

When I was at the Bruche police training centre many years ago, we had what were called Ram Sammy nights,

One evening a week, the large dining hall became a temporary theatre, where police students took turns to entertain everyone. I attended with my room-mate Harry, from Lancashire.

Around 23 years ago, I was on holiday in Spain with my wife, staying with a friend.

One day a couple approached us, needing directions. The man chatted on, telling us that, five years previously, he had retired from the police force after 30 years' service, but when he first joined he was in a Lancashire borough police force.

I told him that I retired at the same time, having served in a Lancashire borough police force, so we must have been training about the same time, in 1958.

Jokingly, he said, "I think my transfer was accepted as I was a good tenor and they wanted a tenor in the police choir."

Something jangled in my brain. I said, "When you were at Bruche did you have a friend named Harry Hurst?" I knew by then that Harry had served in the same borough force as he had. He replied, "Yes."

I went on: "One Ram Sammy night, while at Bruche, did you come and join Harry and me?"

"Yes, I believe I may have."

"You then sang On The Street Where You Live, from My Fair Lady?"

"You are correct."

"Your voice was so good that the commandant requested you sing I'll Join The Legion, a Josef Locke song."

"Yes, he did."

"When you finished, you got a standing ovation!"

We were each dumbfounded that such a coincidence had occurred in a small Spanish seaside village.

Next To Him In A Casino Was A Remarkable Coincidence!

Coneygree Road, Peterborough
Coneygree Road, Peterborough
Back to coincidences today. I saw this one in the Daily Mail newspaper. dated 15th of April. It is from a John Williamson in the UK.

While staying for a few weeks at a friend's house in Seattle she took me to her local casino. She warned me to get only £15 worth of chips so I didn't end up boracic.

Never having been in a casino before, I opted for Blackjack, as I knew it was close to Pontoon, which I could play, and my friend went for the slot machines.

I sat at the table and the lady next to me, who happened to be English, noticed I was a bit uneasy so she gave me a few hints.

I asked where she was from, and she replied: "Peterborough.

I told her I used to live in Peterborough more than 52 years ago.

I continued: "Well, not actually in Peterborough, but the village of Stanground."

She said: "I'm from Stanground."

I then said: "I lived in Coneygree Road."

"So did I," she replied.

I told her my old house number and it turned out her son, still in Stanground, lived in the house next door!

Happy ending ... my friend had lost more than £70 on the slot machines, whereas I still had exactly £15, which I stuck on my last game, and came out with £30,

Coincidence Meeting At the Raffles Hotel Singapore

Raffles Hotel, Singapore

Another coincidence story about meeting someone unexpectedly a long way from home. This one is from Jack Manning from Cumbria, England.

I recently retired from performing in a brass band after playing a cornet for many years. In that time, we played numerous contests and won many of them.

A few years ago, when my wife and I were returning to England from Australia, we stopped off at Singapore for two days.

We were quietly having afternoon tea in the famous Raffles Hotel, as you do, when a lady approached our table and said, "Didn't the band do well last week."

I replied, "I don't know, we've been away for three weeks."

She continued, "Yes, they came first in their heat for the National Championships and your principal cornet player took the prize for best soloist."

I didn't know the lady and was surprised that she knew me.

It turned out that she was also a brass player from another town. Small world!

Write Home To Mother Coincidence

Aden stamp on envelope

A further coincidence story from my clippings file, this time from Jenny Clarke.

In 1964 I joined the Women's Royal Army Corps and trained as a typist. In 1965/66, I was posted to Fort Morbut in Aden, Yemen, to work in the Royal Corps of Transport Office.

One day my boss said the regimental sergeant major (RSM) wanted to see me. No explanation was given. Full of anxiety, I wondered what I had done wrong to involve the RSM. I arrived at his office and saluted. He then asked me to sit down (most odd).

"You don't know me do you?" he said.

What a question - he was the RSM!

He then said: "I was talking to your mother a few days ago. She wants you to write more often."

It turned out he was the brother of a man in Barmouth, North Wales, who both my mother and I new by name. We always called him Benny.

The RSM had been visiting his brother and had met my mother who lived nearby so they chatted.

Thousands of miles away from Wales, I met a man who knew my mother.

This Coincidence Must Have Knocked Six Bells Out Of Him

Six Bells Chiddingly
Six Bells Pub Chiddingly
Back to coincidences today - a short story, but nevertheless quite remarkable. From a Mr.Andrews from England.

Years ago my wife, me and our three children lived in a tiny Sussex Village called Chiddingly, near the popular pub, the Six Bells. My two sons, Christopher and Edward, cut their 'beer teeth' there in their late teens.

After leaving university Christopher went on a gap year around the world. One evening, while skiing in a remote part of the New Zealand mountains, he booked into a YMCA to secure a bed for the night.

Just before lights out, an exhausted skier came in and took the last remaining bed, the one next to Christopher.

Who was it? The head barman from the Six Bells! The odds must be a million to one.

Meeting On The Falkland Islands Coincidence

Falklands

Here's a quick coincidence example I came across by Gill Merrick from Leicestershire in England.

When my husband was an Army Officer in the Falklands in 1983, he called at a local shop. The woman behind the counter was an expat, originally from a small village in Leicestershire, and had married a retired Army colonel who was now a dentist.

To his astonishment, it was our village, and our eldest daughter was a dental nurse and was getting a lift with the same man to work. When he told her his surname, she said: "My neighbour's daughter married a Geoff Merrick" - my husband's brother! It is a small world.
