The Mocking Lake Or Pohenegamook Monster

Pohenegamook monster
Rev Planter's sketch of the monster her saw.
The Rev. Leopold Planter is a man who claims to have seen a monster at Lake Pohenegamook in Canada. The Lake is also known as Mocking Lake - hopefully this name isn't significant!

Rev Planter was standing near his church when he saw this big thing about 25 to 30 feet long, He feels that the monster, "... needs to come out of the water to get oxygen - just like marine monsters."

Planter said of his sighting, "I was fishing and I saw it long enough to throw my line in the water. After that people were afraid to go on the lake."

He added that he couldn't see the monster's head as it was too far away, but he has drawn a picture of how he thought the monster looks (at top of post).

He says, "It wasn't a fish. You can't see it like a crocodile. A fish never floated that way. In 1960 a man here was having his car repaired at a garage. He saw the beast resting on shore. The thing left fast like a boat with a motor. About 100 people around here have seen it."

Louis Fournier and his wife Lucie also say they have seen the monster. They described it as being black and on top of the water, about 85 feet long and it was 50 feet from the shore.

According to Lucie, "He had three humps, like upside down boats. It's not a legend, It's a reality and isn't a fish."

She continued, "It was terrible. My hair was standing up on my head, as if I had nails on my head. It made my head hurt."

Mr. Fournier continued the story, "It turned round as if it was running after fish - five times, each time it took 250 to 300 feet to circle around. It's tail splashed water 35 feet up in the air. Then it dived."

The once mayor of Estcourt, Gaston Painchaud, saw the monster way back in 1957. He said it was dark, gray and was about 40 feet long. He said at the time, "It dived out of sight and brought waves to shore five inches high. There were two humps. It could have come from the ocean through the St John River. It was too big for a sea sturgeon and not the same shape."

Another sighting back in 1976 was by Marcel and Danielle Denis while in a boat on the lake. They were 50 feet from shore when they saw 'a big fish' 20 to 25 feet from their boat. They supposedly stared at the creature for about five minutes as it dived in and out of the water five or six times. In their description they said, "We saw its back, no head. It was a silky smooth gray."

Marcel Denis said that there is a legend that a priest in St Eleuthere kept small sturgeons in a cage in the 1950s. One night they were supposed to have gotten away in a storm. One of these become the monster.

In Peter Costello's book, In Search of Lake Monsters, he writes Reports of a Monster in Mocking Lake have been seriously investigated by a scientist. There had been occasional sightings over many years. In 1958, the Director of the Quebec Department of Game and Fisheries, Dr. Vadim Vladikov, went out to the lake to make a private investigation.

"I have questioned a great many people in Saint Eleuthre (the local village) and they all tell me the same thing- an animal 12 to 18 feet long, brown or black in colour, with a round back two or three feet wide and a sawtooth fin down the centre. Any time anyone approaches close, the animal slithers away and sinks below the lake’s surface."

As with other lake monsters who knows the truth for sure. but you'd think by now someone glued to their phone or iPad would have got a decent photo ir video.

Sightings Of Flying Saucers From The 1950s

1950s Flying Saucers

I was having a backwards look at UFOs to when they were known as flying saucers. My time machine stopped at 1950 and this is what was being reported.

What was described as a flying saucer was seen by about 50 persons at Dayton, Ohio, yesterday [March 8 1950].

The strange glittering object was visible to the entire personnel of the Vandalia Airport. A National Guard fighter pilot chased the thing up to 37,000 feet where it disappeared.

Gilley Stevens, chief meteorologist at the field said the 'saucer' must have flown at least 30,000 feet high because he saw it disappear behind some ice clouds which usually form at that altitude.

He reported the object seemed to move erratically at first but that it later remained motionless for as much as 15 minutes at a time.

"Oakland Cal: A 'disc shaped object' roaring at an estimated speed of 1000 to 1500 miles an hour made five 'passes near Hamilton Air Force base early today [June 21 1950]

Three Air Force non-commissioned officers said the 'flying saucer' had a shooting flame and a 'roar like thunder' dived near a beacon just north of the field.

Corp. Roger G Pryor, a control tower operator at the field, said he saw a blue flame shooting out as the saucer flashed by from the south-west and headed north-east. "I thought it was a falling star. But it didn't fall. It just kept going," said Pryor.

Los Angeles: William Grant, 26, former marine corps aerial photographer, reported seeing a brilliant lighted circular object in the sky last midnight.

He estimated the object was 50 feet in circumference and when first seen was about 1,000 feet overhead. Its speed at first was about 100 miles an hour, then increased to about 500 miles an hour before disappearing behind the Hollywood Hills.

"It was in sight about 45 seconds," said Grant. "It left no exhaust trail and made no sound."

His story was confirmed by Gilbert MacGill, president of a firm conducting research with helicopters.

Grant said he had about 900 hours in the air during the war as a photographer and gunner. "I've always been skeptical about flying saucers," he said, "until now."

Those non-existent 'flying saucers' are flitting about district skies again.

No less than five discs have been reported during the past month bringing the total to eight for Western Pennsylvania. Several saucers were seen by groups of people. others were reported by reliable observers.

So far the 'little men' inside have not crawled out.

Not too much detail from the Pittsburg Press above, but they did include a map of recent [1950] sightings as seen below:

Coincidence Of Father And Daughter's Birthday.

coincidence

Here's one of those weird date and time coincidences.

Nicholas and Candace Jones were awaiting the birth of their first child, which was due to be born on December 17th..

However, fate or whatever, decided the baby wouldn't make the due date. Nicole Jones, weighed in at 6lb 12oz and was born at 9:52 a.m on December 4th at the Lodi Memorial Hospital..

So what, you might say. But the coincidence is that Nicole was born exactly 30 years, to the minute, after her father - so time, day and month of father and daughter are the same!

And another coincidence, Nicholas was born two weeks early, the same as his new daughter. .

The couple named their daughter Nicole as she arrived on Nicholas's birthday. She also resembles her father. Nicholas said, "It freaked me out when I looked at my baby picture, because it looked just like her." He laughingly added, "I just hope she doesn't grow a beard like me, when she gets older."

The Coincidences Of Having The Same Name

Baby boy and girl clip art

Frank William Boumas often received mysterious phone calls and misguided mail. The problem was that there was another Frank William Boumas in town.

About ten years ago the two men with the same name finally met - and they discovered that this was only the first of several coincidences.

They met by coincidence at the Kent County Airport because of a ticket mix-up: They were both booked to Florida on the same airline, the same day.

They got chatting and learned that each of them had married on July 9th. Frank and Trudy Bouma had celebrated their 50th anniversary and Frank and Nella their 55th.

Both couples had a daughter and, again unknown to each other, named their daughters Marcia - out of all of the thousands of names they could have chosen.

Oh, and both of the two Frank's fathers are both named Fred.

It is strange about names. In my own family my paternal and maternal grandfathers were both called Frederick William and both of their fathers (my great grandfathers) were called John.

Her Cats Diagnosed The Cancer And So Saved Her Life

Cat Doctor

Stephanie Doody, 55, from Staffordshire in England says she has her cats to thank for saving her life.

At the time Stephanie had no apparent illness symptoms, but doctors later discovered that she had a tumour on her appendix - a form of cancer that normally goes undiagnosed until it is too late.

She has three cats Dinky, Rennie and Jaffy and they noticed that something was wrong with Stephanie. They started to follow her constantly and would sit on her lap poking at her abdomen. She said, "I absolutely believe the cats knew."

She went on to explain, "The cancer is a molecular change in your body so you give off a different smell that they pick up on and they just try to get your attention. For a while my cats had been following me around, but that's normal - they're cats and that's what they do. But it got more intense and for months they stayed with me everywhere I went."

Jaffy would lay her head on Stephanie's stomach as she slept and six months after the cats first indicated a problem she found a small lump after losing some weight and then headed for the doctor.

She said, "It wasn't until the day I got back from the doctors that they [the cats] disappeared into their normal spots. It was as if they were saying 'finally you have discovered it.' It was unbelievable."

In October last year Stephanie had complex, invasive surgery. She says, "The surgery was horrendous and I was in intensive care for a couple of days on morphine but I would have died without it."

She insists that her cats did their utmost to warn her, they had sniffed out her cancer.

Steam Packet Chancellor Livingston 1817
Steam Packet Chancellor Livingston 1817
This weeks vintage photos and illustrations from my Google + page.

I came across the old print of the Steam Packet Chancellor Livingston (as above) recently. It states: "Built from plans drawn by Fulton for a corporation that held a monopoly of the waters of New York state for the use of steam propelled vessels."

Vintage Halloween Scene Photo

I wasn't too sure what the photo above was all about but my Google+ friend Thex Dar thought it was a Halloween picture. He then went to the trouble of getting a selection of such photos and turned them into a video for me, which can be seen here.
