A Love Letter Received From Beyond the Grave

Love letters

A story today from a widow who wishes to remain anonymous. She feels that the letter concerned was received from beyond the grave, for want of a better expression. Perhaps you have a different opinion. Here's her story ...

"A few weeks after my husband died, my daughter called to visit me.

We sat together, looking through some photos. I found myself saying: "The one thing I regret is that your father never sent me a love letter. Other widows have letters, sometimes tied up with ribbon, but I have nothing like that."

Just at that precise second, both my daughter and I gave an involuntary. "Oh!" because right before our eyes was an envelope sitting on top of the photographs.

We did not  see it actually materialise, but were certain it had not been there before.

I picked it up. It was dated 43 years previously and was addressed to me in my maiden name. I took the letter out of the envelope. It was indeed a love letter, professing love, 'body and soul' for ever.

I cannot remember ever receiving this letter."

White Doves as Messengers From the Dead

Today two more readers experiences of seeing white doves after someone dies.

(1) This is all for real. When I was a child our across the street neighbour raised white doves.

When someone died he would offer the family the opportunity to have a dove released.

Doing this for my dad, at his passing, the dove flew to dad's house and sat on his porch for three days. This was over 20 years ago.

Now, just last week, my daughter had an experience where her 26 month old baby was in her crib in the morning. My daughter heard her laughing out loud, like the room was filled with clowns.

Jenn, my daughter, looked in her monitor to see what was up in the baby's room upstairs. On the monitor Jenn saw her baby standing in her crib watching and seemingly moving her head around as if following something. What Jenn saw was a white dove flying around the baby's room entertaining the baby.

Amazing for sure, but her baby is blind! My mother also lived with blindness for the last 30 years of her life.

Jen said she was awestruck and absolutely knew that it was Granny. I also have no doubt she is always around me too.

(2) I don't know how to explain what happened when my grandma passed away about a month and half ago. We released some doves at her funeral. For some reason one of the doves flew up on top of the canopy tent that was shading my grandma's burial site.  It just stood there looking at us,

We tried pushing the bird from underneath the canopy so it would fly away.

After thinking about it for a minute, I thought that it was my grandma letting me, and everyone, know that she was there in spirit. I have a picture of this which makes me wonder every time I look at it. I wish someone had an answer as to why this happened.

Anyway, I love you grandma and miss you dearly.

Her Tears Ceased When Her Dead Husband Visited Her

Another experience of seeing a loved one after they have died.

"My husband died in an accident at 28, just three months after our wedding. Less than 24 hours later he came to me. I saw his arms outstretched and his massive smile.

It was a huge comfort to me and was the only time I stopped crying for a few minutes during the first few days.

I felt his presence many times in the months after, but never saw anything like that again. It still comforts me three years later.

I'm not sure what I believe in terms of God, religion or the after-life, but this happened and I can assure you that it was as real as you and me."

She Felt The Breath of her Deceased Husband on the Back of her Neck

Here's a story from my cuttings. I suppose the question arises: is the experience down to imagination or is it contact from a deceased love one.

"I lost my husband of 51 years in February of last year. I thought I was going daft.

Sobbing, I asked my husband: 'Please, just let me know you are okay.'

He did! With just two long breaths on the back of my neck - and I thanked him.

Also, we used to share a banana every Friday after tea. One Friday, walking back to the kitchen, I just said: 'Saved your share.'

Such a feeling came over me like electricity - oh, the joy was so great."

Was Her Deceased Father Waiting For Her Dying Mother?

From my clippings: An experience of a daughter whose mother died of cancer. Did her mother see her deceased father?

I was caring for my mother in her final weeks of life. She was terminally ill with cancer.

My mother was a non believer in religion, ghosts, the after- life and anything sh'd consider 'soppy nonsense'.

Two days before she died, she was in a bad way, bedridden, her pain managed by morphine. She was lapsing in and out of consciousness. I sat with her constantly.

One evening she suddenly became lucid and pointed towards the end of the bed. "Joe," she said, the name of my father, who had died twelve years earlier. "What, Mum?" I asked her.

"He's here, waiting for me," she told me. "I can see him".

She looked happy and serene.

I still don't know what to make of it. Cynically, I could say it was the drugs, but it did seem real to her and I witnessed no other visions or imaginings. I wonder?

Grandfather's Ghost Averted A Baby Disaster

A short but interesting experience where a ghost averts a baby disaster. The writer's name has been withheld.

"My sister had given birth to the first grandchild in our family, and had come home from the hospital.

She wasn't used to carrying the baby around the house, and tripped over a rug and fell forwards with the baby in her arms.

Her husband saw her stumble and fall, rushed to catch her, but before he could reach her from a distance she was propelled back to standing. He was as shocked as anyone!

My sister said that she smelled our late grandfather's familiar aftershave and knew it was he who had caught her and saved the baby."

Signs From Loved Ones Who Have Died

There seems to be so many ways loved ones can leave a message after their death. On this blog, for example, you will find a myriad of stories where people have seen white feathers following the loss of someone close. This has happened to me personally.

People have also seen butterflies, robins, other birds, including doves, and so on.

Today, though, something different : a praying mantis!

Lola has told me of her experience:

"In this day and age we often miss the signs of our loved ones who have passed on. I have experienced loss enough times to believe there are definite signs that show loved ones remain in our lives and help us through the grieving process.

People have there own individual signs. For me it is the praying mantis. After a loss in the family we will start to see them everywhere, no matter what time of the year it is."

While on this theme lets also look at white feathers once more. Here is an experience from someone who prefers to remain anonymous.

"My sister passed away very suddenly aged 17. I had never seen a white feather in our house previously, but they began appearing every single day for the first couple of weeks after she passed away.

I wasn't very religious beforehand, but I definitely took it as a sign.

When it was time for me to leave my home a few weeks later, to go back to college, I found a gigantic white feather on my bag, and one stuck to the car door! when things were most difficult, white feathers would appear.

They then began appearing in my college dorm when I returned, something which never happened before. As time went on, they became less common. Then, about a year later, on the morning of my graduation, a huge feather floated down towards me. I definitely take it as her way of letting us know she is ok"

Saw His Dead Mother in a Bright Light

A further story from my clippings about people who have experienced encounters with those who have died.

"I think visions are caused by the grief of losing a loved one.

After my mother passed away, I saw a light appear, which came closer and closer and got much brighter. Then her face appeared, surrounded by a dazzling light.

It was all very clear. She was just looking at me; then it started to fade before disappearing. It lasted about 15 seconds and I was obviously very shocked. I am not a religious person.

My mother experienced the same thing when her father passed away, which did make me feel better about it. She never told anyone else about that except me."

She Saw Her Dead Neighbour in the Street

A story from my clippings about people who have experienced encounters with those who have died.

"I once saw a dear neighbour - a lovely elderly lady who had been very ill - standing on the edge of the pavement outside her flat and looking toward my house with a big smile on her face.

I remember thinking how well she looked and smiled because it seemed she was now better.

I didn't pull back the curtain to wave because I had just got up and was wearing a tatty nightie and my hair was a mess!

How I wish I had because a few days later her daughter told me that her mother had never recovered from her illness and had died in hospital before the time I saw her.

But I did see her - and I can still see her now. I can't explain it."

Seeing Or Sensing Dead People: Imagination Or Reality?

Seeing or sensing dead people

A few quickies from my cuttings file where people clain they have experienced seeing someone who has died. Imagination or perhaps a reality?

Four years ago I awoke in a panic about a friend whom I had not seen for some years. He was quite well known and I often thought about him, but never in panic.

I rushed to the computer to discover he had died in the night. I am still amazed by this as I am a sceptical person

~ Katymay

My brother was killed 40 years ago, aged 21, when he took a short cut over the railway line. The following night, I woke up and I saw him as clear as anything, lying on the floor with his back to the sideboard.

~ Perfect 10

During the worst five days of my serious illness, my late father appeared in a recurring dream on five consecutive nights. During the dream we laughed like drains together.

These dreams were very comforting.

My mind was doing what it could to get me through a hard time. Some might say the old boy was helping from the 'other side', but there's no reason why I should believe this.

~ Peter

I guess though it doesn't really matter if it is imagination or reality if it comforts the bereaved.

Comforted By Her Dead Father's Kiss

LIfe after death

An interesting little story I came across recently.

My Dad was in a care home, close to death. I was looking after my Mum, who was in her late 90s, so I took her home and I fell asleep on the sofa.

I was awoken by a sweet kiss behind my ear and immediately looked at the clock. It was 2.30 pm.

Not long after that, the care home phoned to tell me Dad had passed away at 2.30 pm. I didn't need anyone to tell me that kiss had come from my Dad.

Later on, in a dream, I saw Dad in his den looking at his bookshelf. I called out. "Dad!" and he looked at me. I woke up euphoric.

I went to my parents' now empty house, and had a look at the shelf my dad had been looking at. There was only a dusty old book that didn't look interesting. But when I picked it up, I found it contained my paternal grandfather's journal of his days as a Fleet Street editor, and all the famous people he had met - like Emily Pankhurst, Scott of the Antarctic and so on.

What a find!

Her Deceased Husband Switched On The Kettle

A touching story today about a loved one making contact from beyond the grave. I realise some will say that this particular experience is too far fetched but, who's to say. See what you think.

My late husband Mike and I adored each other. We'd been together since I was 16 and he was 19, so imagine how devastated we were to learn that he had mesothelioma (asbestos related cancer).

I nursed Mike single-handed throughout his illness as I couldn't bear the thought of being parted from him. He died very peacefully sitting next to me, holding my hand, in his favourite chair, four days after his 60th birthday.

I was heartbroken and, as I stroked his hair as he took his last breath, I said: "Promise you'll always be with me Mike." Today I am positive he is.

A week after he died, I was trying to stick four tiles to the wall in the downstairs bathroom, because they'd fallen off. Often my eldest son, Steve, would call in to see me on his way to business meetings for a quick coffee and chat.

This particular morning, I was getting distressed as I couldn't get the tiles to stick. I suddenly cried out: "Oh Mike, if you were here you'd know what to do - and you'd be making me a cup of tea, wouldn't you?"

Within a couple of minutes, I heard the sound of the kettle in the kitchen. I waited (still in the bathroom) until I heard it click off, then called out to my son: "Steve, will you make the tea and coffee please?", thinking he had called in.

There was no reply, so I got off my knees and went to the kitchen - but there was no one around and the back door was locked. I went over to the kettle, which was still steaming and scolding hot. The last time the kettle had been used was for my breakfast at 7.30am - and it was now 11,15am.

I froze, but then a lovely warm feeling came over me. I said: "Is that you, Mike?" and I bawled my eyes out. So yes, there is life after death. I'm so relieved because I know that I will see my beloved Mike again.

Her Dead Mother Guides Her And She Knows She Will See Her Again

Heaven dream

An interesting experience from Jenny which may indicate that those who have died can contact us through dreams. Some may write this off as purely a vivid dream but to Jenny, as you will read, it was much, much more.

"My mother Joan and I were incredibly close. When she died in January 1998, after a series of strokes that had led to vascular dementia and pneumonia, I struggled to cope.

At the first anniversary of her death loomed, I was comforted by the idea that I had a skiing holiday booked with friends. Yet on the anniversary itself, despite the warmth and companionship of those friends, the loss of mum struck me acutely.

The following morning, before waking, I had what I can only describe as a very vibrant dream. Over time I've come to realise it was much more than that.

I became aware of a great light and voice - unspoken but sensed somehow - that told me I was going to see my mother, and that afterwards I must go forward and live my life and allow her to move forward also.

I was led through a door into a room with an amazingly bright and uplifting light - so bright it was blinding - but I knew my Mum was there because I felt the most unbelievable, unconditional love of a kind greater than anything else I've felt on Earth, before or since.

It was all-consuming, and when I woke up it was with a sense of renewed peace. My mother, I felt, had given me freedom to move on.

From that day I was able to look forward and start to plan for the future - aided by a sense that Mum was with me.

Unlike a dream, which evaporates over time, the experience has stayed with me, growing stronger. I feel that, in her own way, Mum guides me and I will see her again, and that brings me enormous comfort."

He Glimpsed Heaven And No Longer Fears Death

An experience today about how Roy Goff believes he glimpsed the life that awaits us all after death.

"I'm not prone to fanciful ideas and I'm not particularly religious. Yet and experience I had on New Year's Day 1995 left me in no doubt that life on Earth is only the beginning of existence.

I'd been in ill health for some time, and, after taking a walk to see in the New Year, I started to experience pains in my chest.

At the time I lived alone, so once I'd returned home I rang the doctor's surgery and talked to the receptionist. I told her I would go to bed but leave the front door open for the doctor to come in.

By the time the doctor arrived I was drifting in and out of consciousness. I remember being driven to hospital. All the while I was feeling sick with fear about what was happening to me.

Slowly that feeling of fear left me, and I saw myself in a field full of long grass under a blazing sun. Stretching ahead was a ill where, looking up, I could see the figure of a young woman.

She was wearing a voluminous black dress, which reached the ground, and a tight fitting white bonnet - just like the clothes my grandmother used to wear.

Peeping out from behind the woman's skirts were two little girls, similarly dressed. They were all beckoning me to join them.

Although I didn't recognise them, I did want to be with them. Immediately, in a flash like a bright star exploding, I was back in my body and full of pain again.

I had, they later told me, suffered two heart attacks and 'died' twice, but fortunately they brought me back to life each time.

Nothing like tat vision had happened to me before, or has happened since. I believe I did catch a glimpse of the life that finally awaits us all. I firmly believe that after our death we continue in another place. And my experience has certainly taken away my fear of death."

The Shape Of The Universe And Gateways Between Dimensions

The shape of the universe and life

I know other people's dreams are mostly boring but I had a dream of sorts that appeared to continue while I was awake - so I'm going to bore you with it.

The dream was about the shape of the universe and the shape of our lives - which go hand in hand.

My head was first filled with the idea that everything is a circle, and then how this can't be true as it would mean we keep on coming back to exactly where we started - which seems pretty pointless.

So life isn't a circle and probably not some elaborate cycle either, because this would also produce more of the same - again this would serve no real purpose.

It was decided that the Universe - our lives included - is a spiral without a beginning or an end. By spiral I mean more of a spring shape, like the image above. A spring that goes on forever - as do we.

Our current life, as we know it, had an initiation more than a beginning and lasts until our transition as we gradually move along the eternal spiral shape. We don't die. As Emerson said: Every end is a beginning.

Gradually we shift along the spring, coil, spiral or whatever you would call this shape unrestricted by time.

Mayfly
Time is man made but other creatures may have a differing opinions. Take Mayflies, for example, providing they are allowed to have their say. The adults are very short-lived, from a few minutes to a few days, depending on the species, but whose to say if their lives appear any shorter to them than our 70, 80 or 90 years.

But let's get back to our own human lives. The spiral shape of the universe would allow us to journey between dimensions, time zones and so on. It could be the basis of paranormal experiences. Maybe this is what happens when people say they have visited Heaven, or claim they have travelled into a different period of time, or have had some precognitive message - a gateway opens. It might just be a matter of tuning in.

A gateway in the universe

Okay, I know this post is only dream based - though the gateway is my own idea - but it's as good as suggesting that the universe is doughnut shaped. And it's a fun subject to ponder.

We Create The Afterlife We Desire

View of Heaven

I was pondering what the afterlife will be like. I've read and written about near death experiences in the past and there often seems to be similarities within these stories - but there are also differences, which many writers brush aside.

For examples those with a Catholic upbringing may encounter a St Peter like figure at the Pearly Gates whereas a Muslim may experience themselves in green gardens with fountains while being attended by dancing girls, as described in Islamic literature.

I expect most of us hope we will all be treated equally when we die and any near death experiences should, therefore, be identical but this appears not necessarily to be the case. Surely there can't be segregation for varying religions and beliefs.

If we consider our dreams, now they are all different, dependent on our personal memories, hopes, fears and desires - born from the 'personality' of our unconscious mind if you like.

If we look at lucid dreams - where we realise we are actually dreaming - we can almost manipulate happenings. I can remember in one particular dream I told myself I didn't have to worry about what was happening because I was only dreaming. So I relaxed and observed, like watching a play at the theatre. And sometimes even our everyday lives can appear like this in certain situations.

Could it be that, just as our dreams are individual, so is death, dependent on the actions and thoughts while alive in our physical body? Some may undergo fantastic adventures. Others may suffer from recurring nightmares, trapped in some form of hell created by their own minds. While others may experience a kind of paradise conjured up by their expectations.

Of course, another possibility is that our 'surviving' personality re-enters another physical body and once more wakes up to the physical world. This may be via an embryo or a newly born baby but could also take over the body of a living person - some would call this possession.

All of this is speculation. It's also conceivable that in our dream-like existence. following death. we are open to spiritual influences from a realm far beyond what our human mind can imagine or comprehend.

Whatever happens to us following death I feel does seem to depend on our own beliefs and attitudes. If we close our mind to possibilities we may become trapped within our present fears and limitations. It could well rest with us to create the afterlife we desire.
