Meeting At The Royal Albert Hall Coincidence

Royal Albert Hall, London
Royal Albert Hall, London
Here's another remarkable coincidence from my cuttings - by Brenda Wood. All of the stars must have been in the right place on the night mentioned!

Four of us - old colleagues now retired - meet once a month.

On one occasion we were discussing a certain lady we had all worked with but none of us could remember her name.

A few weeks later a couple of us went on a weekend trip to London, which included a carol concert at the Royal Albert Hall.

Halfway down the motorway my friend Joan suddenly blurted out without any warning: "Gail Trantor!" This was the name of the lady we couldn't remember a few weeks before.

When we were shown to our seats in the stalls we found that, due to leg space restrictions, we were very uncomfortable.

An attendant very kindly reseated us in a box. Looking over the balcony to the box on our left, I saw a lady that looked familiar - could it be Gail Trantor?

We quickly dismissed this as being too ridiculous a coincidence, but a few minutes later I felt a tap on my shoulder. A young girl said, "Excuse me, but my mother in the next box thinks she knows you,"

Yes, amazingly it was Gail, making a fleeting visit to London to see her daughter who lived in London.

Gail now lives in Spain. We could hardly believe it!

The Remarkable Coincidence Of The Seventh Child Of A Seventh Child

Horse number 7

A short oddity coincidence story which made me smile. This is a letter from Arthur Clancy to the author Arthur Koestler following the publication of his book The Roots of Coincidence.

lucky number 7 seven"I was born on the seventh day of the week, seventh day of the month, seventh month of the year, seventh year of the century.

I was the seventh child of a seventh child, and I have seven brothers; that makes seven sevens.

On my 27th birthday, at a race meeting, when I looked at the race card to pick a winner in the seventh race, the horse numbered seven was called Seventh Heaven, with a handicap of seven stone. The odds were seven to one. I put seven shillings on the horse. It finished seventh."

The seventh son of a seventh son is a concept from folklore regarding special powers given to, or held by, such a son. The seventh son must come from an unbroken line with no female siblings born between, and be, in turn, born to such a seventh son - source Wikipedia.

Long Lost Sister Found By Coincidence

Warren Tavern, Boston

A coincidence story I saw a while back in the Daily Mail newspaper from a Stephen Wright. It's quite a coincidence.

Back in 2004 I was in Boston, in the U.S., looking for The Warren Tavern, a historic inn.

Asking a young lady with a pram for directions, I recognised her accent and it turned out she used to live about 12 miles from my home in Leeds [in England].

She told me that after a career as a model she married an American, lost touch with her family in the UK, had twins and the rest was history. On that note we parted.

On my return to Leeds the following week, I was in a city bar and this man noticed I was wearing a Boston baseball cap.

I asked if he had been there. "No," he replied, "but I have a long lost sister who I think lives there."

He proceeded to tell me that, as a model, she married an American guy and decided to stay there.

I was certain that this was the girl I had spoken to, so I mentioned that she must visit, or live near The Warren Tavern and left it at that.

A few weeks passed and by chance I bumped into this man again and he told me he had managed to trace his sister from the information I had given and they were back in touch again.

He was so pleased, he bought me a drink as I recall.

The Haunted House Coincidences

In south-west Nebraska a family believe their house to be haunted. Donna and her husband bought their house in 1988 but it wasn't until 11 years later that they began to first notice strange, sometimes disturbing happenings.

For example, Donna's young son, Toby, refused to sleep in his own room. She said, "He just refused to go in there and kept saying 'There's someone in there.'"

Toby told his mother that on several occasions he would hear a gun cocking beside his head, followed by the sound of a horn across the room.

There were other creepy incidents, a CD player would switch itself off, voices were heard from the basement.

Donna began to investigate the history of her home. What she learned astonished her.

Around 1935, after a flood, her home was moved to town from the country. Apparently, several people died in the house: a pioneer boy in 1886, an older woman, and a man who spent his time in a mental hospital.

The man was 42 when he died ... but there were some remarkable coincidences. He bought the house in 1888, exactly 100 years before Donna and her family moved in. The man had a daughter who was born in 1881 - Donna's daughter was born in 1981. The man's daughter graduated in 1900 - Donna's graduated in 2000, from the same high school. Their daughters also shared the same first name of Sally.

Strange things continued to happen. A friend stayed overnight, but was reluctant to stay in the house because she could see someone standing by the bed.

When the friend awoke the next morning, the necklace she wore to bed was gone and she had red marks on her neck.

Sally woke one morning with a large scratch across her forehead.

Things, however, gradually calmed and Donna said, "Lately, if we tell them to stop whatever it is they're doing, they'll behave."

Lilies Of The Valley Connect Two Friends 3,000 Miles Apart

lily of the valley
Lilies of the Valley
Now this short story, by Joy Bridle, must be telepathy surely - coincidence and telepathy appear to collide at times.

I lived in Gloucestershire [England] and my husband was in hospital having an operation for cancer.

When I was picking lilies of the valley in my garden, I thought I would call a friend of mine who lived in Maryland, in the U.S, and tell her. I phoned her and she immediately picked up the phone and said, "Hello Joy."

I said, "How did you know it was me?"

She answered, "I was picking lilies of the valley in the garden and thinking of you."

She was more than 3,000 miles away. I thought it was incredible.

An Angry Voice From Her Husband's Grave

Policemen from 1910
1910 Policemen
I guess most readers will say this is all imagination on behalf of the writer. But, who knows ... here's the piece by Pat Lawton.

My husband died 20 years ago and he is buried in the local churchyard. I have been visiting regularly, tidying the grave, placing fresh flowers there and mentally conversing with him.

One unusual thing about him was that he had a great distaste for the police, even though he was never in any kind of trouble.

Last year I was attending his grave when a retired policeman I know came over from his wife's grave to chat to me. I was astounded to hear my husband shout: "Get him away from here."

I immediately turned to the grave - I don't know what I was expecting to - but it was the same as usual.

I looked at the policeman, who obviously had not heard a word. I was not at all frightened, just amazed. Life is so strange - we don't understand lots of happenings, do we?

Was Their Contacting Each Other Coincidence, Telepathy Or Precognition?

Two women for tea public domain
Picture: Public Domain
How weird is this short story? Well it probably depends on what you believe. It could be a coincidence, but there again it could be some sort of telepathy or maybe precognition was involved. But, whatever, it would appear that the two people concerned were meant to be friends for life.

My childhood best friend, Roe, and I lost touch for over 15 years, mainly because I moved to London to work and she remained in the same town, married and had children.

With little in common any more, we sadly slipped apart. But just over 15 years later, out of the blue, I decided to send her a card, to let her know I was thinking about her.

The next day, my mother called me to say that a card had dropped through their letterbox for me. It was from Roe! It had been posted the same day that I had posted my card to her.

We will never lose touch again: our friendship was meant to be.

National Service Parachute Coincidence

National Service Poster
National Service Poster
Coincidences can pop up in the most unusual situations, as this story from C Atkins illustrates.

During my National Service in 1954-56, I served with the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry. Early in 1956 in the lead up to the Suez Crisis, the Parachute Regiment asked if our regiment would provide the 'enemy' for an exercise of Bodmin Moor.

I was in a forward position in the drop zone when, just before dusk, a plane flew low over us and we watched as the occupants jumped out and deployed their chutes. One paratrooper landed close to my position and, as he unbuckled his harness and gathered up his chute, looked at me and said, "Hello, Charlie, what are you doing here?"

It was Brian Norman from Minehead, and we were in the scouts together.

An observing officer came over to us and told me not to fraternise with the enemy!

A New Life Of Boundless Power

Boundless Power

A week ago my post was about Henry Ford and his way of dealing with problems. The writer was someone called Henry Thomas Hamblin and I believe it was written in the 1970s. I came across another piece by him, which touches on his view of spirituality. I thought it may be of interest to 67 Not Out readers. The second paragraph is one very long sentence, but I have left it as in the format written by Hamblin.

Man is heir to wonderful illimitable powers, but until he becomes aware of them and consciously identifies himself with them, they lie dormant and unexpressed, and might just as well not exist at all as far as their uses to man, in his unawakened state, is concerned.

When, however, man becomes awakened to the great truth that he is a spiritual being: when he learns the little petty self and finite personality are not the real self at all, but merely a mask to the real man: when he realises that the Spiritual Ego, a true divine Spark of, or branch or twig of the Eternal Logos, is his real Self: when he understands that his body is not himself, that his mind is not himself, that even his soul is not himself, being but the vehicles through which he seeks expression, but that he is spirit, deathless, diseaseless, eternal, forming an integral part of the One Spirit and being identical with It, he enters a new life of almost boundless power.

The Coincidence Of The Numbers Of Life

Number 56

A while back I wrote how the numbers 76 and 67 pop up in my life over and over. Certain numbers seem to frequently appear in other people's lives as well. Here is an example from Colin about the number 56.

"My son Tim who is 27, has been, since he was around 14, beleaguered by the number 56. It appears in his life with alarming regularity, directly and indirectly.

"When my granddaughter Brooke was born just before 10am, he jokingly asked if the time was 9.56. The nurse said "No, 9.47" (but 9+47=56).

"Now you may say so what, but it goes on. All the digits of his children's birthday dates add up to 56!

"Last summer I was waiting to board a plane at Heathrow when my son called to say good bye. Just as he said hello they announced my gate had changed to 56.

"A few weeks later I was downloading a movie in the US at my wife's apartment. I woke in the morning to see its progress, it was bang on 56%, not a digit more. One moment later I had an email from Tim to say my grandson had been born weighing 5lb 6oz. His birth date also completed the 56 total.

"This has gone on for so long, we expect it, but we also look at times when it hasn't happened. There are obviously lots of them but most of the significant numbers in his life are 56 orientated.

"An addendum to the last e-mail about my son Tim and his connection with the number 56. Yesterday his 4th child, my granddaughter Harly, was born at 4.56 pm. I kid you not."

The Holman Projector Coincidence From World War 2

Holman Projector 1941
A Navy Wren with a Holman Projector
An unusual coincidence story about something called a Holman Projector, which was used in the early days of World War 2 by ships as a defensive weapon against low flying attacks from German planes. The story is from Maurice Cross from England.

When I joined a motor torpedo boat in Lowestoft in 1941, I noticed a drain-pipe gadget behind the stern.

I asked a seaman gunner what it was, "It's the Holman Projector," he said.

"What does it do?" I asked. He told me.

"What!" I exclaimed, "you drop a hand grenade down the tube and when a Messerschmitt comes roaring down, you try to judge the split second to flip the grenade up?"

"Of course not," he shouted his eyes wild. "We're not raving idiots! The only time we fired it live, the dodgy compression unit just flopped the grenade over the top and it dropped on my feet. I almost died of shock!" His face paled. "If Taff Evans hadn't kicked it over the side, we'd have been holed like colanders!"

Such is the long arm of coincidence, that after the war. working in Bath, I used to go to a cafe behind the Pump Rooms. I shared a table most days with the same chaps, one a boffin from the Admiralty,

One day I told them the story of the amazing Holman Projector and rounded it off with the comment: "I wonder what kind of gormless twit in the Admiralty accepted it for the Navy?"

The boffin raised his eyes from his crossword and said, "I was responsible for that project!"

"Oh!" I said and downed another forkful of Welsh rarebit. He never sat with is again.

~ Maurice Cross, England.

From Wikipedia: The Holman Projector was an anti-aircraft weapon used by the Royal Navy during World War II, primarily between early 1940 and late 1941. The weapon was proposed and designed by Holmans, a machine tool manufacturer based at Camborne, Cornwall. A number of models were produced during the war years, but all worked on the principle of a pneumatic mortar, using compressed air or high pressure steam to fire an explosive projectile at enemy aircraft.

Caught Speeding Coincidence

Caught speeding

Back to coincidences today, seen in the Daily Mail, this one is about being caught speeding.

In February I was caught speeding by a mobile police camera, doing 47mph on the A689 Carlisle bypass, which is a 40mph zone.

I was given the option of attending a speed awareness course, which I accepted, and attended the course in a Carlisle hotel in April.

There were 24 of us, and we were divided into tables of six. At one of the breaks I began talking to the guy sitting next to me, who came from Newcastle, about where we were caught speeding. I mentioned that I had been caught by a mobile camera on February 19 on the A689 Carlisle bypass, which was a short distance from the hotel.

This guy, who I had never met before, said he was caught on the same road on the same date - February 19 - at 11.43am. I looked at my letter and saw I was caught at 11.40am.

What are the chances of two people meeting at a course, having passed by each other within a few minutes of being flashed by a police mobile camera, almost two months previously?

~ Jimmy Smith

Note: In the UK, as an alternative to a speeding fine and penalty points, a speed awareness course is sometimes offered.

How Henry Ford Dealt With Problems

Henry Ford
Henry Ford
I read the following from a very old cutting. The writer was a Henry Thomas Hamblin:

In a recent issue of Collier's Magazine, an interview with Henry Ford appeared. He spoke of the way with which big business men deal with problems, and pointed out that they did not spend a lot of time pondering and puzzling over plans or ideas. He said, "An idea comes to us; we think for a little while and then we put it in the pot to boil. We let it simmer for a time, and then take it out."

What Henry Ford means, of course, is that an idea or problem is dismissed to the sub-conscious [now usually called the unconscious], which works it out, and presents it to the conscious mind for judgement.

As an example, an inventor or one who is constructing something mechanical, can make use of the sub-conscious mind in precisely the same way. Let him sum up the whole problem, arrange all the facts and available information, and pass them all to his sub-conscious mind, when, if a successful result is within the range of possibility, an answer or idea will be forthcoming. All this being done, mark you, without any effort whatever.

All this may seem, especially to some readers, rather wonderful and far-fetched, yet there is nothing mysterious about it. I am perfectly sure that there is no great writer, politician or business man who does not make use of his sub-conscious in this way. He probably does it unconsciously, but the procedure is the same.

I know a lot of people think that this is all mumbo-jumbo, but it does work - at least to my satisfaction. It's similar to that old expression about sleeping on it.

As a simplistic example. If we do crosswords and can't solve maybe one or two of the clues, then if we put the puzzle away and forget about it, the answers will often pop up unexpectedly.

It's all a matter of thinking about something and then forgetting it and moving on to something else - then, Bob's your uncle, the solution or answer will come. Magic!

A Ghostly Great Dane Saved Their LIves

Ghostly Black Great Dane

This makes a change - a black Great Dane dog acting as a guardian angel! Here is Raven's slightly spooky story.

My sister Carolyn and I were travelling from Florida to Georgia. It was dark out, and I will speculate the time to be around 4 a.m. We had recently got on the Florida turnpike and were south of Boca Raton, Florida.

Carolyn, who is a notorious interstate speeder, was travelling well above the 65 mph speed limit at the time.

I heard my sister say, "Now what is he doing out there?" and slowed down the car.

I looked over to the side of the road where she was looking, and asked what she was talking about. She replied, "That big black dog over there."

I could see nothing on the side of the road, but she swore she could see this huge dog, as big as a Great Dane on the side of the turnpike in front of us. She slowed the car down further, and we began to climb a hill. On the way down, there is a curve, and we noticed a bunch of highway workers on the side of the road, setting up signs in order to start work on the highway.

At the speed we had been travelling, we would have collided with one of the highway trucks and possibly killed.

When I later asked her about it, she said she saw a huge black dog, on the side of the road, and he looked like he was about to go into the lanes. She was driving a new Toyota, and knew if she hit the dog at the speed she was travelling, she would have almost 'totalled' her car, so to try to avoid him she slowed down. She claims she saw the dog the entire time she was passing him, and could see him in the rear mirror, I saw nothing,

She credits this 'dog' with saving our lives and looks at him to be a guardian angel.

I don't know what she saw, but I am glad she saw something.

~ Raven
