White Feathers Following The Loss Of a Loved One

White feathers

It's a while since I published any white feather stories so here are three I have received recently. These are experiences where white feathers are seen following a loved ones death.

Today would have been my mother's 97th birthday. Just before the family were leaving to go and put flowers on her grave a lovely wee white feather floated down among us - mum letting us know she was there.

I like the stories about the white feathers, possibly looking for comforting signs - but something proved it for me...

I was going for a big operation [surgery] and was a bit nervous of course. My mum had passed away two years before this. I was sitting waiting for the trolley to take me to the theatre when the orderly walked in then said, "I guess that's for you". On the empty chair beside me was a beautiful white feather. This was a closed room with no windows. I felt so good.

When I was recovering, following the operation, a nurse said you have a gift in your drawer. The orderly had put the feather in a plastic case and handed it to the ward ... a sure sign it was from a loved one.

~ Rose Mcloughlin

My father, 94, passed in January. I found a white feather by my car door, I found one on a bush at my house and another on a shirt in a clothing store.

I bought a new car and there was one in the lobby. My cat is dying and I asked my dad to show a sign. I was sitting outside and looked up in the sky and a white feather was floating over my house in the wind. The white feathers appear when I really need my dad with me.

~ Laurie

My mum passed away last night and a large white feather fluttered over the family as we were leaving the hospital. I'd never heard of this before but my sister knew and pointed it out. It's too much of a coincidence and seen by too many people not to be true ... I love you mum.

Okay they may not be the best white feather examples (though they are important to the people concerned) but over the years I have had a flood of such stores. It all started when I lost three very close people in a short period of time: my mother, daughter and my best friend of thirty years. After each of their deaths my wife and I started seeing white feathers wherever we went. If we started talking about one of them a feather would appear. I remember once going to visit our daughter's grave and a feather did a complete circle and landed where we were standing.

I know many will say this was all imagination or coincidence but it was meaningful and comforting to us at that difficult time. I wrote about this on my blog and it seems many, many others have had similar experiences.

White Feathers From The Spirit World Stories

White feather from spirit world
A white feather I recieved
I have published quite a few posts (some links below) about white feathers and how I feel they can be messages or symbols from loved ones who have died.

Here are a selection of recent white feather stories I have received from from 67 Not Out readers. Most do not want their names published, but they are all genuine.

My dear husband, Gene, passed away December 2010,ever since then I have found white feathers.

My grandson and I were sitting in the same place my Gene and I would sit in Church and a white fluffy feather landed between us. In the Spring my son took me to a major league ball game and down came a white feather. And it goes on and on. I'm making a collection of them.

Just when I need a feather from Gene, down it comes. In my heart I know its the Lord and my Gene saying every things alright!

My wife's elderly father died last Thursday evening.

The funeral was this morning (Sunday). After the service, we proceeded to a nearby restaurant for a lunch get together for about twenty family members.

We parked the car, my wife and I were walking across an open air plaza to the restaurant. Half way there, a soft downy white feather came floating down right in front of us! It nearly landed on my nose! I commented to the wife, "Isn't that odd?" ... for it is rainy and blustery today (hurricane approaching) ... not a bird to be seen in the sky!

I thought about it afterwards so I Googled it and came to this site. I saw it with my own eyes, can offer no 'rational explanation' ... I am now sort of a believer!

My father passed away unexpectedly while on holidays in New Zealand. My mother and both my sisters received white feathers within a two week period. I was devastated as I didn't then. Eight months and one day after dad passed, my feather arrived to me while I was at work. I found it sitting on a clients bed in the nursing home where I work and no, there aren't feather pillows or blankets in the place.

Love you dad and miss you.

Lisa

My mother died yesterday. She always believed in synchronicity.

She died in St Michael's Hospice but for many years St Michael had been significant to her.

I was trying to remember why this was and found your post regarding St Michael's chapel in Roche - a significant village for our family - and it's connection with Ley Lines. It fell into place and then I saw the link to white feathers, something she again always referred to as an indication of an angel. I wonder if I will come across one to let me know she is thinking of me.

Going through a rough time at the moment, and a few family deaths. Mum mentioned finding a white feather, "Auntie Phoe telling us it'll be all right". I smiled and said nothing.

I now keep finding one or two white feathers on a regular basis. Even looking after a neighbours house, on a repeat visit, two white feathers on the stairs, which I certainly hadn't seen before. They are a little comfort when I need it.

I have seen endless white feathers around me since my brothers passing 15 years ago. I didn't know why until I recently heard about it from other people claiming it could be from the spirit world.

Haven't seen one for a while until this morning. Having a few family health problems at the moment, and I drove into work this morning feeling very low and sad, and just as I opened my car door, a white feather floated onto my windscreen. It made me smile and helped me to get through my day.

Thanks bro x

White Feather Girl Gets A Spanking

War Poster

Here's a tongue in cheek story about white feathers. As regular readers will know I've published a lot of posts on this theme.

"I am intrigued by people's accounts of finding white feathers and their belief that they came from the wings of angels. I had a similar experience more than 70 years ago. It was during World War II in 1943, when I was 16, but people said I looked older, more like in my mid 20s.

I had a pet goldfish called Jonah at the time, who was my best friend.

One day, a bomb landed nearby and Jonah's bowl shattered. I found him hours later, in the morning.

Later when I went to the front door, I found that a white feather had come through the letter box.

When the post arrived there was a letter with no message, just another white feather. And when I walked down to the cinema later in the day, a young lady walked up to me and, without speaking, handed me a white feather. She walked off before I could thank her.

Three white feathers in one day. Had Jonah found another friend, and were they watching out for me?"

~ Brian Reynolds, Kent.

White feather cutting
As you may know, the story above refers to how white feathers were handed to those who some regarded as cowards for not signing up to fight in the two world wars. Mistakes were often made, as can be seen by the newspaper cutting on the right, where a girl got a spanking for her error of judgement.

Why Was A White Feather Given To Cowards?

Here's an answer to that question from the Ottawa Citizen of Feb 10, 1977.

"It's a stigma that comes from cock-fighting. The breeding of a gamecock showed in its plumage. Pure bred birds were strictly red and black, and only pre-bred cocks fought well. Even one white feather in the tail of a fighting cock branded it a cross-bred and, according to the wisdom of the pits, a coward.

Cowards of the human variety, especially those somehow shirking military duty were said to be 'showing the white feather' Though more often in romantic literature than in real life, they were sometimes sent in an unsigned letter containing a white feather to shame them into action - or just to shame them."

The Badge.

Silver War Badge
Going back to the case of the girl who received a spanking for giving out a white feather. This may seem a light hearted cutting but the handing out of white feathers became something of a problem. They were often handed out to men who were far from being cowards. So much so that a badge - the Silver War Badge - was created for men who were officially excused from being in one of the British armed forces. Perhaps they were unfit, had been injured in action or were doing valuable and necessary jobs within civilian life.

So, there we are white feathers with a difference from being found following a loved ones death or even simply falling out of a white bird.

P.S. In Brian Reynolds story above he mentions about white feathers coming 'from the wings of angels'. Personally I have never actually thought this to be the case.

The Meaning Of White Feathers As Messages From The Dead

White Feather meaningI'm returning to the subject of white feathers today and their meaning. Since first writing about this I think I've had more emails on the subject than anything else.

By white feathers I mean how they can often be found following a loved ones death. This has certainly been my own experience. I lost three people close to me in a short period of time: my daughter, my mother and my best friend of some thirty years.

After losing such important people it takes a while to adjust and you tend - or at least I did - to look for something to confirm that the person is still about. For me this came via white feathers.

The feathers appeared straight away after the loved ones death and at moments when I was thinking about them. This happened too often to be something that many would class as coincidence.

Here are a few experiences from other people. Most don't want their names published but nevertheless they are still meaningful.

The first is by Gloria Hunniford, a well known television and radio presenter in the UK, she lost her daughter, Caron, to cancer and this is what she said:

"I remember one time in a swimming pool, everybody and everything was awash with water and I just looked down and all of a sudden on the edge was just this white fluffy, dry feather and I thought, 'Oh my God!' It's just like Caron popping in to see how the children are getting on."

"My Mother passed away recently. I was with her and it's one of the hardest things in my life.

After the funeral when my cousin was leaving she said to look out for a white feather.

I had never heard of this before. Anyway, today, nearly two weeks since my Mum passed away I looked out the window and everywhere was icy. I went to get in my car and at my feet was a beautiful white feather.

I'm hoping this was a sign that my Mum is ok.

God Bless You Sweetheart x"

Anon.

"I lost my husband very suddenly in December 2010 with no chance to say goodbye.

I have been devastated ever since but have seen several white feathers. I like to think it is his way of telling me he is okay. I have put one in the diary I am now keeping.

I do believe in angels and that one day I will see my husband again."

Anon: May 2011

"My sister passed away very suddenly aged 17, a few years ago.

I had never seen a white feather in our house ever before, but they began appearing every single day for the first couple of weeks after she passed away. I wasn't very religious beforehand, but I definitely took it as a sign.

When it was time for me to leave my home a few weeks later, to go back to college, I found a gigantic white feather on my bag, and one stuck to the car door!

When things were most difficult, white feathers would appear. They then began appearing in my college dorm when I returned, something which never happened before.

As time went on, they became less common. Then, about a year later, on the morning of my graduation, a huge feather floated down towards me. I definitely take it as her way of letting us know she is ok."

"Hi, I lost my mum 13th February this year and in the last week I have found five white feathers. I really hope this is a sign."

Julie

"Thank you for your blog about white feathers, I found them very comforting.

My father died unexpectedly last month and my mum and I were devastated. At his funeral there was a beautiful white feather on the church pew where we sat. It was a message from him I'm sure. Mum and I looked at each other and actually smiled at each other through our tears. Mum said, "Dad's saying he's okay."

Since then we find white feathers in the most unexpected places. I even found one in a drawer by my bedside. They always make me smile."

Receiving White Feathers From The Dead

white feather
I have written a few posts about White Feathers and how they may well be a symbol or a message from those who have died. From time to time I get stories from other readers about how white feathers have brought them comfort when they have lost a loved one.  Here are a few such stories, some of the writers wish to remain anonymous.

I have lost a close friend and had three funerals in the last three months which has been difficult.

After the funeral of the premature and sudden death of my friend, two feathers were on the floor of the car, no idea how they got there. Then a few days later, I was speaking with one of his other close friends on the phone. She was still in shock. I then left the house to go shopping and next to my car on the bush, there was a small white feather. It gave me comfort so I have it on my bedside locker now.

I am sure there is some link to the afterlife and this is a good one.

I lost my 21 year old son almost 2 months ago. He died after having a seizure in the shower.

Last night I was reading a book while having a bubble bath. I decided to finish the book in bed. When I opened the book, there was a big fluffy white feather on the very page I had stopped reading. I was blown away. I never took such things seriously before.

I cannot find any other explanation though, other than it was placed in a closed book by a spirit, my son's I believe.

Hi Mike:

I write because a friend forwarded your blog-link.

Funny, now that I'm 63 I can't remember when I started seeing the white feathers. [I've got a little homestead we call "White Feather Ranch."]

Anyway, my brother had committed suicide, our family was in pain and I think they probably started falling then and ever since they have just shown up and I've really never connected them with any particular event or thought that I can remember. [It is getting harder these days! My sisters may have a better recollection...ha!]

Anyway, I can remember sitting at a pool telling my sister about the white feathers when, out of the blue..ha, one floats down from nowhere. Yes, these are indications of some sort. Shall we investigate? Or, just let them underscore our delight! This is what I shall always do...delight in their existence in my life!

Hi Our baby girl was born sleeping last week and my partner just walked outside and a white feather flew down in front of him. I looked on the net and found your post, its lovely to think its her.

I'm a manual worker, a bricklayer, so I work in a hard environment. I only say this to show that I'm no tree hugging hippy.

My mother died of cancer. She was 58 and it hit me real bad. My brothers seemed to be able to take it in their stride but I couldn't and even went to see a medium. The problem was that I arrived at ma's house about half an hour after she had died. I got stuck in traffic but my brothers were there. They say that she asked why I wasn't there.

The medium played a guessing game and was no help at all. Then I looked at the Internet and came across this white feather business. This helped because I remember that the day after ma died there was a white feather on my tools at the building site. A big fluffy one.

After I read about this sort of thing happening on the Internet I've noticed and found lots of white feathers. There was one in my conservatory last night. I've no idea how it got there as all the doors were closed. I'm beginning to believe that these are messages from ma to say she's OK and she forgives me for not being with her when she died. I hope so.

Stories Of How White Feathers Comfort The Bereaved.

White feather comforting bereaved

It's back to white feathers comforting the bereaved today. Here are two stories I have received from readers. They both wish to remain anonymous.

My brother passed away 2 weeks ago aged 42 after only a 4 month battle with cancer. As a family we are grief stricken.

I mentioned to my parents about the white feather theory and last Wednesday a flower came up through their patio slabs with a white feather attached.

On Monday night, it was dismal and getting dark, I was feeling so upset when I happened to look out of the patio doors and a white feather floated down onto a planter.

Last night I was texting my brother's best friend, I suggested he look up the white feather theory online but didn't tell him we had seen any feathers. He visited my brother's grave today and beside the grave was a white feather.

Three coincidences in just over a week? We didn't go out looking for them and didn't really expect to see them but we did. They have provided some small comfort.

On February 15th my friend Katharine died unexpectedly. She was someone I had known for over ten years. Our children were about the same ages and we shared our parenting skills as well as our troubles. I felt empty inside when I heard of her death from her distraught husband.

The same night I had to go to a parent's evening at the school. I didn't want to go but thought I must carry on for my children's sake. As I opened the door of my car a fluffy white feather floated into the car and settled on the passenger seat.

After the parent's evening, when I got home, I found your website about white feathers on the Internet. All of the stories were incredible. As I turned off my laptop another feather settled next to be on the sofa where I was sitting.

Being honest, I don't know for sure the feathers came to me from Katharine but it made me think about lots of the good times we had together and I thanked her for her friendship.

White Feather: A Sign Of Protection From Her Deceased Husband

White feather

It's a while since I published another white feather story but here's one that came fluttering down to me from Emma ****** - okay, by email.

I'm only 34 but a widow, my husband died last September, a horrible time for me as you can imagine. But since then I have been seeing white feathers. At first I didn't attach any importance to them but I started wondering about them because there seemed too many to be coincidence. I have now read many of the white feather stories on your blog which I found interesting.

The very first white feather I received was on my doorstep when I arrived home after my husband's funeral. I can now remember my sister saying, "Look at that," but I wasn't in any state to take it in.

For the next few days I kept finding feathers; in the garden, inside the house and when I went to the supermarket.

Three weeks after the funeral my sister asked me to go on holiday with her and her husband and two children to Devon. I immediately said no as I thought it disrespectful. They persuaded me a change of scenery would do me good and booked a cottage. I still had reservations about going.

We arrived in Devon, it was a lovely cottage and my room looked out onto the garden. I went to unpack my case and as I opened the lid there inside was a white feather. I have no idea how it got there, but it felt like my husband was giving me his approval.

As I walked out into the cottage garden there was another white feather and I actually smiled and felt like my husband was with me.

All of this may simply be me searching for comfort, but finding the feathers picks me up when I'm feeling down and I always say a thank you for the feather to my husband. I feel he is watching over me, in a protective way.

White Feathers As Messages From The Deceased

White feather

One of the the most popular themes I have covered on this blog is that of White Feathers - where they are seen following the loss of a loved one. Okay, I know this isn't everyone's cup of tea, and that many mock such things - that's fine!

I first raised the subject in 2010 because I experienced this myself. I saw white feathers, and in unusual circumstances, following the loss of three very close people within a short period of time.

I wrote back then: "The feathers felt like they were messages saying that things were alright. Often, after we saw one, something nice would happen. Of course, when we are emotional, there can be a tendency to hang on to whatever we find comforting. Some would say that the white feathers were like a crutch.

It's very easy to dismiss white feathers as something by chance or even superstition - feathers perhaps simply out of pillows, or even birds!"

Anyway, whatever your view. Here's a few more stories, some are anonymous - as the people concerned do not wish their names mentioned.

"My brother died last month following a long illness. We were very close and it was a heartbreaking time.

He died in hospital. Towards the end I visited him whenever I could. On his final day I stayed until midnight but the nurses persuaded me to go home and to get some rest. I did what they said.

At six o'clock in the morning the phone rang. I jumped out of bed, knowing who it was. It was the hospital telling me my brother had died. There was a white feather on the table next to the phone.

I headed for the hospital, as soon as I could, and on my car seat was another white feather. I've no idea how it could have got into a locked car. When I was inside the hospital the nurse, who had been so kind to me, said, "There's something on your shoulder." It was yet another white feather.

The feathers kept coming until after my brother's funeral. I really do feel they were messages from him."

~ Joan Ferguson

"I lost my dad on July 24, 2015. July 26th, while dealing with a contractor at his house, I found a white feather on the door handle of my car, finer than goose down, I didn't think anything of it, and blew it off my car with a mouthful of air.

Yesterday at the bank, I talked to an elderly gentleman who told me of finding a white feather the day his daughter passed away from cancer.

Then, while talking with a friend of mine who had lost his dad, he told me to look out for weird things to happen, and mentioned his own white feather story.

A friend and a stranger brought it up without any prompting. I am ex-catholic, and proudly agnostic but this has changed me, be it religious, or just a spiritual thing. I had never heard of this before searching the internet for any info or other's past experiences - goosebumps for sure..."

And it appears to sometimes even happen when people lose pets!

"My lovely dog Bugsy was put down 7 years ago and we randomly get white feathers. Today my beautiful dog Fergie was also put down and there was a large feather under the kitchen table just before the vet arrived. It made me smile that Bugsy was telling me she was going to look after her."

The White Feather Messages From Katharine's Deceased Mother

White feather

Another white feather story to add to the collection. This one is from Katharine Farrell.

"My mother died in July almost unexpectedly, so it was a big shock for me and my sister. We were all very close since our father passed away.

At the funeral we found a white feather at the graveside, right where me and my sister stood. It was my husband who saw it. He pointed it out to us because it was large and fluffy and for no other reason.

When the funeral was over some of us made our way to my sister's house. She got there before us and the first thing she said when she opened the door was, "There was another white feather on the doorstep when I got home."

Since then both me and my sister kept seeing white feathers for five or six weeks and then they got less and less until September 2, which would have been mother's birthday. My sister and her partner came to my house and when I opened the door to them there was a white feather by the front door.

Me and my sister kept thinking the feathers were somehow from mother but my husband thought that was silly. But now I've seen all of those other white feather stories I'm convinced the feathers we saw were from our mother. I find it comforting to think this, as I miss her very much and I know my sister does as well."

White Feather Stories: Messages From The Deceased

White feathers falling

Two more white feather stories I received over the last few days - the author of one wishes to remain anonymous.

When my mother died, it was the worst moment of my life. I was in tatters and, as silly as it sounds, I couldn't believe that she had really died.

At the funeral I was in bits as we stood around mother's grave. As I looked down at the coffin a large white feather fluttered down and settled on some flowers, on top of the coffin. A good friend said, "Look your mother is thinking about you." I wasn't sure what she meant but somehow it was as if I had pulled myself together. I stopped crying and felt at peace.

Over the next few days I saw other white feathers and I believe they were from mother telling me she was alright and I should get on with my life.

A couple of weeks later, I saw a white feather while walking in the park, and picked it up. As I did so someone asked, "A message from a loved one?" It was a lovely looking man and, to cut the story short, we are now married. I believe my mother had a hand in this.

~ Heidi H

My stepfather passed away. He was cremated, and we had a church service for him.

In the limo on the way to the cemetery, my mother was seated in front of me and had her window opened. As we drove through the cemetery to his burial plot, a white feather came twirling down from the sky, through the opened limo window and landed right in my mother's lap.

My mother picked it up and threw it out the window as I gasped. I wasn't sure, and don't remember how I had heard about a feather being a sign from a loved one who had passed. I never said anything to anyone at the time because I wasn't sure.

If I told anyone now, they probably wouldn't believe me. So I just keep it between my stepfather and I. He must have wanted me to see it too.

White Feathers As Messengers From Beyond The Grave

White feather

The white feathers are still with us. Since I collated some of the white feather stories on 10 White Feather Story Posts As Examples Of Messages From The Dead I have received more experiences from readers. Here are a couple of examples.

White feather
"My beautiful mum lost her battle with cancer on 11th of February 2013.

I nursed her for five weeks and slept in the same room as her. Me and my dad were with her when she died at home in the bedroom my dad now sleeps in.

Mum always said she would let me know she was near and that she would wait for me in heaven.

I spend a lot of time with my dad at their home as I believe mum is there. Her ashes are there. I was upstairs in the bathroom and I held her dressing gown to my face and when I let it go a small white feather was on the floor. I cried my heart out as I knew mum had sent it.

The second feather was in the garden attached to my classroom. I am a teacher my mum also worked there. It was on my shoe as I looked down.

My dad does not believe in the significance of a feather. I've asked my mum to do something to show my dad she is here. They were together 53 years and he is heartbroken and not coping so I have asked mum to help him through the heartache."

There's a shop, Choccywoccydoodah, which has been featured on UK television and makes fancy, often expensive cakes, sometimes for actors and celebrities.

Their creative director, Christine Taylor, has been talking about some of the special cakes she has made including one for the singer Cliff Richard. He wanted an angel cake for the Caron Keating Foundation as a tribute to the late daughter of his friend Gloria Hunniford.

Christine explains: "There was something very special about that cake. Caron always told her friends they should think of her when they saw a white feather. Just after Cliff told me this a feather fell from the sky.

Then, when we delivered the cake, there was a hitch and one of the angel's feet broke, so I used the spare chocolate feather I had to sculpt a fresh one."

White Feathers As Messages From the Deceased.

Finding

I haven't published any white feather stories for what seems an age, then these three arrived almost together. It's often said things come in threes! The stories relate to people finding white feathers following the death of a loved one.

My dad passed away suddenly on Easter Sunday 2016, then my mum had a heart attack the same day from shock.

My brother and I were at the hospital and then returned to their house It was was really weird neither of them being there, But their dog, Missy, kept looking where dad usually sat, staring,

We locked the main doors and I sat down, and my brother was near the fire, I said, "I wish dad would give us a sign," At that moment the door keys jangled, My brother looked and I looked and I smiled.

We didn't tell mum as we didn't want to worry her but today she rang up and said, "I found a white feather," I went, Okay ..." She was so happy and she explained it to me about white feathers. I went, "Wow," So I told her what happened with the door keys and that has given her great comfort

I cant believe dad has gone but there must be a better place where we go [after death].

My lovely husband passed away three weeks ago 14/3/2016. My house was cleaned through yesterday. Last night I went to get a coffee. And lying on the carpet was a large eight inch fluffy white feather, all the doors had been closed. It was placed so perfectly. He did tell me he would give me a sign that he was be OK.

Normally, I wouldn't be submitting these comments. but feel I have to share my experience with a white feather.

My wife passed away three weeks ago, losing her 2 year+ battle with cancer. She was at home wih us under hospice care, and shortly after she died I was in the room with her alone. I asked her if she would send me some kind of a sign to let me know she was OK.

Two days later I went into her room and in the middle of the bed was a single white dove feather. No one else had been in the room but me, so I have to believe it was my wife communicating with me.

Meaningful White Feathers As Messages From The Dead

White feathers

It's been awhile, but I'm back to the white feather theme again today. Here are three experiences from Emma, Jody and anonymous - my thanks to them for telling their stories.

"Thank you for your posts about white feathers it has helped explain to me that it isn't simply my imagination that such things happen.

I read that you had three people close to you who died in a short period of time. The same has happened to me and each time I have seen white feathers.

The first time it didn't mean much to me, it was like, "Oh, there's a white feather at the graveside." The second time I thought it a coincidence that it had happened twice. But it happened again last week and it's then that I searched Google and found your posts.

My sister died of cancer. It was expected, but nevertheless a great shock when it actually happened. The moment before she died she looked brighter, smiled and said what sounded like, "Hello grandma."

As I went to leave her room at the hospice there was a large white feather resting in the doorway.

At my sister's funeral, at the graveside as they lowered the coffin, another fluffy white feather fluttered down from somewhere and settled on her coffin. It was very strange but somehow it made me feel better about my loss.

Afterwards my brother asked if I'd seen the white feather, so it was for real.

Since then I've seen several feathers and each time I say a thank you to my sister."

~ Emma

"I had never heard this before [about white feathers] but about three years ago after my beloved cousin had taken her own life and I was writing my aunt my condolences I looked out and amongst the pouring rain I saw a lone white feather ascending skyward somehow avoiding the rain ... I had no doubt in my mind it was her ... showing me she was at peace. Crazy.

~ Jody Johnson

"I've never heard of white feathers as messages from the dead - until I read this here. But my spiritual teacher, who is now dead, has been sending me white feathers for years. He does it when I've been 'worrying' a problem and think I might have arrived at the right answer."

Readers Stories About White Doves And White Feathers

White dove

As regular readers will know I have published quite a few posts about white feathers and white doves. Many people see these as being signs or messages from the deceased. Here are a couple more examples. The first about white doves.

"I went through a very serious personal crisis two years ago and spent a lot of time at my church in intense prayer. I found an alcove with a statue of Jesus where I would pray quietly with my eyes closed.

One day I started to see very bright white spots with my eyes closed.

One at a time they continuously changed shape and grew wings and I realized they were doves floating around. It was unmistakeable and it happened again multiple times. Sometimes they would even sparkle or glow.

This simple image was God's answer to my prayers. I am very fond of doves now."

The next two are slightly different white feather stories because the feathers appear and then disappear. I published a post a while back about how wedding rings disappear and then reappear, so why not white feathers as well.

"My Aunt passed away at the end of October. Being devastated by my loss one day on my way to work I decided to ask my angels to give me a sign that Auntie was okay, and at peace and I asked to see a white feather.

On the window sill when I got to work was the most fluffiest perfect white feather. The window was closed and there was nothing around that it could have come from. I knew it was my sign. I picked it up and put it in my pocket.

When I returned home I informed my daughter and went to reach into my pocket to show her, but the feather was gone. I believe in Angels and find comfort in the sign that my beloved aunt is okay."

"I have always believed in white feathers and have had many disappear over the years.

Just recently my mum passed away and I had one float down out of nowhere and I took it home. By the next morning it had disappeared.

I find comfort in them appearing and disappearing - its like they need to flutter off to give someone else comfort and that is nice.

My boyfriend has never believed until recently and now he is seeing them everywhere too.

Thank you all for sharing, your stories are so lovely and hope the feathers keep coming."

Kindly note that the stories are genuine, but the writers wish to remain anonymous.

White Feathers Comfort The Bereaved

In my previous post I started to talk about white feathers and maybe their meaning.

After my first experience with the white feathers I hit a sad time in my life. In a period of 16 months three very close people died: my mother, my best friend of some 30 years and my daughter. The latter two deaths were quite unexpected.

Needless to say this hit my wife and I quite hard. I questioned many of my long held beliefs and now feel that life is about change, nothing is permanent.

I've been lucky though as I now have some new people in my life such as my wonderful daughter-in-law to be who is pregnant, so my son will soon be a dad and me a granddad (frightening!)

Following my mother's departure from this world my wife and I started to see white feathers. They seemed to be everywhere and these continued following our other two losses as well.

The feathers felt like they were messages saying that things were alright. Often, after we saw one, something nice would happen. Of course, when we are emotional, there can be a tendency to hang on to whatever we find comforting. Some would say that the white feathers were like a crutch.

It's very easy to dismiss white feathers as something by chance or even superstition - feathers perhaps simply out of pillows, or even birds!

The odd thing, however, is that they sometimes seemed to almost answer questions.

On one occasion I was walking across the square in our local town, just after my best friend had died and wondered if he was okay. A daft question some will think, as he was dead, but out of nowhere a white feather appeared and fell at my feet. As I continued to walk it flew on ahead and did a sort of big forward circle before falling again at my feet.

Perhaps I was clutching at straws but I got an instant feeling inside that things were okay with him and I had no need to worry.

This sort of incident followed my wife and I during the sad times. My wife would find a feather and say, "Look, she's thinking of us." And that's how we felt. It was comforting.

The other side of this is that we also came across black feathers and following these something not so good would happen - even one of the deaths.

At the present time the feathers, white or black, have stopped appearing. Perhaps we are getting stronger and don't need them quite so much.

Recently I've been reading about white feathers and theories of their meaning. I don't know if any of these are correct as none of them a struck an immediate chord with me. All I can say is that they helped my wife and I and seem to have helped other people as well.

Gloria Hunniford, a well known televison and radio presenter in the UK, lost her daughter, Caron, to cancer and this is what she said:

Gloria Hunniford"I remember one time in a swimming pool, everybody and everything was awash with water and I just looked down and all of a sudden on the edge was just this white fluffy dry feather and I thought, 'Oh my God!' It's just like Caron popping in to see how the children are getting on."

And on the BeliefNet website I read the following:

"White feathers may appear in the most unlikely places. When you have found a white feather, carry it round with you to keep your angel close. Once, when I was teaching an angel seminar, I mentioned that white feathers are a common angel sign. After the seminar a woman said that, despite what she had heard, she was not convinced of the existence of angels. At that very moment another student noticed a pure white feather stuck to the sleeve of her cardigan."

Angels? Guardian Angels? Messages from the dead? At the moment, I honestly don't know for sure.

Footnote: I would just add that a white feather is also known in the British Army as a sign of cowardice. So much so that in WWI lapel badges were issued to essential workers on home soil to show they were helping the war effort and were not cowards avoiding military action.

They also indicate pacifism in some countries and bravery in North America.

White Feather Messages From Her Deceased Son

Today a further white feather story from a reader who wishes to remain anonymous. It shows how even skeptics can start to believe once they have experienced something personally. Hopefully the white feathers will have brought some small comfort for the writer, following the death of her son.

"Let me begin by saying that all of my adult life, I have been a hard core cynic, who believed that death was the end for us all.

When my son unexpectedly died from a seizure in September, 2011, I was thrust into deep grief. About six months after his death, I walked to my mailbox, which I rarely did at that time as my husband always brought in the mail when he came in from work each day. As I approached the mailbox, I saw a white feather lying neatly on the ground next to my mailbox. I picked it up and brought it inside, but thought nothing more of it.

That afternoon, as I was reading the posts of a grieving mother’s Facebook group, where there was an entry about feathers as a sign from deceased loved ones. Although I rarely posted on this page, I posted a note simply stating that I had found a feather near my mailbox that day. Later that same evening, my oldest son (also a hard core cynic), who lives 30 miles from me, called in amazement to tell me that he too had found a feather in his yard earlier that same day, but obviously had placed no significance on it, until he read my Facebook post. However, I still believed both feathers to be just some strange coincidence.

A few days later, as I was walking into my office building one morning, I found a feather lying next to the front door. I picked it up, brought it home and put it with the first feather I had found. Although I pondered the third 'coincidence' a bit more, as I had not found a feather in years prior to the first one, I still refused to place any other significance on them.

A few weeks later, I was leaving work late one afternoon, after having sat at my desk crying all day, missing my son so desperately. I walked to my car, unlocked the door and there was a feather in the middle of my driver’s seat.

Now let me add, that my car was in the parking lot, only a few steps from my front office door, right outside my one story office building. My car is clearly visible to me from my office window, where I had been sitting all day. After a few seconds of shock, I took out my cell phone and snapped a photo of the feather. I checked all my car doors and windows, only to find that my doors were locked and all the windows rolled up. Although I have tried to find every reasonable explanation as to how this feather could have appeared in my locked and closed car, I have yet to find one.

As an aside, I have had several other strange occurrences, since my son died, that had nothing to do with feathers, some of which are even more unexplainable. Believe me when I say that I was not expecting any 'signs,' given my hard core cynicism. While I am no longer a 'hard core cynic,' I am still a skeptic looking for answers, as all of my adult life I have searched for logical explanations for any 'other-worldly' events about which I have heard. But, I must say that from the numerous anomalies that I have seen with my own eyes, since my son’s death, I can find no such logical explanation for many of them. Yes, I was in very deep grief when these things occurred and many would say (as I would, had I heard of them from anyone else) that it was simply the imaginings and/or wishful thinking of a bereaved mother. But, again I was never expecting any of them and was shocked and even frightened by some of them.

While I still cannot say definitively how or why these things occurred, I can definitively say that they did."
