Even A Sink Plughole Can Yield A Coincidence Story

Here's a quite remarkable coincidence story from Anne about gold nose studs. It's a very small world at times!

"I went travelling with Kirsty. We had no plan, our aim was to follow our noses around Asia for about six months before starting college. Several weeks into the trip, we found we liked different things, so decided to each go our separate ways.

Two months later, we bumped into each other in a backstreet of Kuala Lumpur. Kirsty said she was on her way to get her nose pierced. On an impulse, I decided to do the same. Soon we had matching gold stud things in our noses. The next day we went off on our own again.

A couple of months later I was in Bangkok in a hostel and was washing my face in a sink when my nose stud came loose and went down the plughole. I couldn't see any way of getting it back so I bought a replacement.

Months later I got back home to England and several months later still met Kirsty again. We went to a pub to catch up on out travel experiences. The subject of nose studs came up and I explained to her how I lost mine down a plughole.

Kirsty couldn't believe it and went quite white.

She had also stayed at a hostel in Bangkok. She had also washed her face in a sink and she had also lost her nose stud down the plughole.

Kirsty though, was a bit more practical than I was. She reached under the sink and unscrewed the u-bend trap where, to her amazement, two identical gold studs fell into her hand."

Readers Coincidence Stories

Three 67 Not Out readers coincidence stories I have been saving up for a few weeks. My thanks to Carol Riley, CJ and Peter.

I was on holiday last year in Majorca with my husband and we got talking to another couple we usually saw at breakfast. We all got on well and as we got to know each others history me and the other wife found out we were both born in Hayes.

But then we realised I was born in Hayes, Middlesex and she was from Hayes in Kent.

That was a coincidence but then we found out that as a child she lived in East Way, Hayes, Kent while I was living in East Way, Hayes, Middlesex.

It then turned out that we were both born in April 1971.

Our husbands started calling us the terrible twins as we both have brown eyes and dark hair and are of a similar build.

Since the holiday we have kept in touch regularly and plan to meet up in a couple of weeks time. They are coming to stay with us for a long weekend. I feel I have made a really good friend and our husbands get on okay too.

~ Carol Riley

In the mid 1980s I lived in south Birmingham and after the pub my friends and I would walk home past a row of shops and then peel off to our various houses.

One day when walking home the public phone box on the row of shops was ringing (this was about 11.30 at night).

One of our group decided to answer it for a laugh and when he answered it the call was for him!

His friend had miss-dialled his home number and got the call box just as he walked past.

When we looked into it the timing was partly because his friend had called at a time when he thought he would be getting in from the pub and the two phone numbers were very similar.

~ via CJ.

My girlfriend Liz and I were waiting for a bus in a village in Wales while on a holiday. We had only been there a few minutes when we saw the bus come round the corner.

A couple came down a path, near the bus stop. They were passing through on a long-distance hike . Liz knew them! She had met the same couple the previous year when she was on a hike with her ex in Scotland.

We said a quick hello and then we got on the bus and went on our way.

Squidoo Readers Strange Coincidences

Coincidence of job interview

A couple of a years back I published a Squidoo Lens 10 Strange Coincidence Examples. It listed some of the well known classic coincidences plus some I have had myself. Here's a couple more coincidence stories that readers of the lens told me about.

First from Victoria of WebaliciousGuides

"I had a precognitive dream about five years ago after having a job interview for an internal job promotion. I dreamt that I was in the manager's office and he told me that I had been offered the job, although it was slightly different from the one advertised. I then dreamt that I was on the beach and all these green and pink slips of paper were floating around me.

When I got to work the next morning (the day I was due to be told whether I'd got the new job) I found that there were several green and pink slips of paper scattered on the ground outside the office - they were blank on both sides, and they were there for no apparent reason. I had never seen anything like that before, in all my months of working there. I thought it was spooky I had seen them in my dream the previous night. But in some way it reassured me - if that part of my dream was true - then maybe the dream about me getting the job would be true too.

And so it was - even though I wasn't offered the job at the rank I had applied for, I was offered one in the same role but at a different rank. It was really spooky, but I was just glad that I'd got the job! I had several other weird experiences at that time in my life."

And the second from jmurphy

"I had a very strange coincidence in my 20's. I went backpacking around Europe with a friend in 1973. While staying at a hostel in Marseille, we met some lads from Yeovil in Somerset. I took a picture of one of them.

Some years later my brother-in-law's sister married the same man who I had met in France and I had the pix to prove it. Neither I or my friend had any connections with Yeovil at the time, and my sister had not yet married. Spooky or what!"

67 Not Out Readers Coincidence Stories

Coincidence of woman looking at a photo

The post on 67 Not Out with the most views (one million plus) is Married Couple In The Same Photo As Children. It's about a couple who married and then discovered how the wife was pictured with her husband as children, completely by coincidence. They didn't know of each other at the time and their respective families lived hundreds of miles apart.

It seems, however, that similar coincidences happen more than we might think. To illustrate this, here are a few short coincidence experiences left by 67 Not Out readers. I have only altered any spelling errors or obvious grammatical mistakes.

Definitely also happened to a friend and I! She became my best friend in 4th grade and we've remained friends until this day.

A few years ago, I was going through old photos my parents had - and what do I find? A photo of me and my father sitting on a parade float next to my friend and her mom. We were three years old!

Crazy, crazy coincidence.

~ anon

When I was 7, I was playing in my front yard in Garland, TX when one of the many airplanes going to the DFW airport flew overhead.

A voice in my head said "Look up. Your future husband is in that plane."

Thirty-five years later, I was discussing my husband's family's move to California with him and how they had a stop-over in Dallas. He had been on a plane that landed in Dallas exactly at the time that plane went over and I had that childhood psychic moment.

~ Susan H

This same thing has happened to my husband and I.

One day we were at my parents home and he was looking through one of my old scrapbooks of camp and there he was in a picture I had taken six years before I even knew who he was!!!

~ Alishia

I met my boyfriend, and months after we started dating, I met his sister, who just happened to have been one of my best friends in high school.

He's a few years younger than me, so it was kind of funny to think back on the days when his sister and I would pick on him and tell him to leave us alone because we were busy getting ready and doing teenage things. Hehe!

~ faetastic

Hey, me and my husband were in the same place at the same time every weekend for about three months until I was single.

When I became single we met at a local club and have been together ever since and its been five years. Sometimes its not meant to be until its meant to be.

Oh and me and my hubs have been married for three years and it still feels like yesterday we just fell in love

~ Miss Liz

True Story: I was at the Octoberfest in Munich, when I overheard someone talking about my sister. What are the odds!

~ DaveG

When my husband was in kindergarten he went to the same elementary school that I went to when I was in sixth grade.

We lived in the same model house a few blocks from each other. He moved out when he was in 1st grade and I moved out when I was 18 years old. We worked at the same small company when we were 24 years old.

We got married and have been married 32 years!

Very happy years.

~ anon

My great-grandfather (from my dad's side) was an army general, and my other great-grandfather served under his command for many years. The two families never met.

Many, many years later my mother married my father. They did not know about their grandfathers until years later. They were reading some old letters my father had. These were from the general and were adressed to my other great-grandfather. He was giving him orders and instructions on battle.

I now keep the letters, and find it funny that I am now somehow the result of this first encounter. Weird!

67 Not Out Reader's Coincidences

The web of coincidence

Coincidences today from 67 Not Out reader Diane. If you have a coincidence story you would like published on this blog please forward via the Contact Button at the top of the page - thank you.

"Some coincidences for you.

My Mum and Dad met at a Band Hall which used to be a church. When they died it was an non-denominational chapel, and we were able to hold both of their funerals there. I didn't know, however, that they had met there until Mum's funeral. An old family friend told me how he was the one who had introduced them to each other.

Mum died on Mother's Day and Dad died on Father's Day.

Alan, my husband, and I were in Prep together, but then his family moved away. We have the class photo. We were born in the same hospital, 21 days apart and we re-met 21 years later.

His Mother's birthday is on the 20th of June, my Mum's was on the 20th of June, nine years apart. Our Dads were born on the same date, 16th of December, five years apart.

My Grandfather was Alan's Scout Master and football coach."

Cardiff Car Park Astronomical Coincidence

Cardiff Bay Car Park
A coincidence story today from 67 Not Out reader Toby Holmes. If you have an interesting coincidence story you would like published on this blog please use the contact button at the top of the page - thanks.

"I recently bought a new car from my local garage in Middlesex where they took my old car in part exchange. A week later I headed off on holiday to South Wales with my family packed in it, that's two children and my wife.

We drove along the motorway and, after crossing the Severn Bridge into Wales, we decided to make a detour into Cardiff before going on to our holiday destination. We found a posh car park and then went for a walk around the regenerated area of Cardiff Bay. After having something to eat we headed back to the car park to continue with our journey.

As we walked over to where our car was parked our littlest son said, "Look dad it's our car."

I didn't reply so he said the same thing again. I said, "Yes, I know it's our car."

But what he was looking at was the car next to our new car. It was our old car! The one we had part exchanged with the garage.

I couldn't believe it, so I took a photo as I knew our friends wouldn't believe it either. By making a detour and parking in a space we chose, we were able to have another final look at our old car.

Odds of this happening must be astronomical"

30 Year Old Library Book Coincidence Story

coincidence book

A short, but nevertheless, quite a remarkable coincidence story from a 67 Not Out reader who wishes to remain anonymous.

"I know this isn't as big as some of the coincidences on your blog, but years ago I was in my school classroom and my teacher told me to get a book from the library or I would get a detention.

To cut a long story short, I ran to the school library and picked up the first thing I could see.

When I got back to my class and sat down, I looked at the list of names of all the people to take out this particular book. It was a battered old thing, and you'll never believe it - the last person to take out this book was my mother, a whole 30 years before me!

I spoke to her when I got home and she said that was the only book she'd ever taken out of the library, when she was in a similar situation!

Spooky!"

The Coincidence Nudges From TV

Coincidences or synchronicity examples today from Bette involving TV. I always like these less dramatic stories as they seem to be gentle reminders or nudges that perhaps not everything has an obvious explanation.

television coincidence clipart
"I was on the phone with my cousin who was telling me that she was to fly out to visit her brother in Orlando, Florida, that afternoon. I told her that my sister had visited a town near there that was full of psychics, and I knew that she (my cousin) would like to visit there, but I couldn't remember the name of the town.

I couldn't call my sister, as she was out of the country at the time, and this was pre-look it up on the Internet days, so I struggled to remember. Then, just as we were about to say goodbye, a commercial on the TV got my attention with the announcement, "A town full of psychics, Casadega, Florida, next on Geraldo!"

I have so many examples that involve the TV. Here's another quick one: My sister said to my daughter, "When your mother found out you were moving back here she sang ... Hallelujah!"

Just then my husband turned on the television which had a choir that sang, "Hallelujah, Hallelujah!" in exact timed response to her. Needless to say, we were all stunned.

These stories are so much fun!"

Money Folded Into Four Coincidence

A coincidence story today from Suzie who often leaves comments on 67 Not Out.

"As you know, Mike, I was away for a holiday in France and ventured across the English Channel by ferry with my car and, oh yes, my boyfriend, I nearly forgot!

We had parked our car at the docks and I got out to have a walk about after our journey down from London.

As I wandered in the drizzle I bent down and picked up a piece of paper. I don't know why I did this but when I looked it was actually a £5 banknote all neatly folded into quarters. My lucky day, I thought.

After about an hours wait we drove our car onto the ferry with my findings safely in my bag.

Once in France we set off driving to our destination. I decided I wanted a cup of French coffee so we pulled into a service station and went into their cafe.

Coffee over I went to find the loo. As I did so there on the floor was another folded bank note, but this time it was a €5 european banknote. The funny part is that this was also folded neatly into four quarters just like my £5.

We had a good break, the weather wasn't too special but the gite was in a romantic setting, so we managed to put our time to good use, if you know what I mean.

Holiday over and back in London I phoned my mother to tell her how we got on while in France, some of it that is. We talked away and at the end she said, "I found a £5 note this morning. It was on the pavement outside our house, all folded in four."

For some reason it sent a shiver down my spine."

She Found Her Painting After 40 Years

A 67 Not Out reader's coincidence story today. The author wishes to be known as 'Doris' - so my thanks to Doris.

"I often read your blog and your article about the twins meeting after about 50 years made me decide to send you one of my coincidence experiences.

Between 1968 and 1969 I lived in Poole in Dorset and painted as a hobby while my children were small. In Poole Park they sometimes had exhibitions of local artists and I entered two of my pictures of flowers, which I was willing to sell.

I was thrilled to find out that one of my paintings sold for £6, which was a decent amount in those distant days. Following this I often entered my pictures into Poole Park exhibitions but sold very few. This didn't surprise me as I'm not that good a painter, it was only a hobby.

Last year I went to the Lake District, several hundreds of miles away, on holiday and we stayed at small Bed and Breakfast places which we booked as we travelled.

On the third or fourth night my husband and I found a suitable B&B and booked in. The proprietor showed us to our room and above the bed was a painting. I joked that it looked like one of mine. The man didn't make much of what I said and left us on our own.

"I'm sure that's my painting," I insisted to my husband.

"Can't be," he said.

I couldn't let it rest and stood on the bed to take a better look. My husband thought I'd gone mad or something! The painting was only held up by a picture hook and I managed to take the picture down.

There on the back was my name and old address in Poole!

We told the proprietor about the painting and he said it was amongst his mother's possessions when she died and he thought it suitable for one of his letting bedrooms. He didn't know how his mother had got the painting as she never lived in Poole.

We had booked into that Guest House purely by chance and were then given the right room to view my painting again after over forty years. It's a small world."

A Proud Dad Thanks To A Coincidence

A 67 Not Out reader's coincidence story today. My thanks to Patrick.

"Four years ago I was in a relationship with a very attractive girl who was a model. I'll call her Alice. We were living in Southampton but she craved attention, from other men. She had one affair for which I forgave her but I couldn't do this again when it happened a second time. She did everything to persuade me otherwise but I decided to move back to my home town of Ealing, London.

I knew if I stayed she would hurt me. I handed in my notice at the office where I worked but I met up with Alice once more to say goodbye. She asked for my home phone number (I was initially going to stay with my parents), which I gave her.

I started a new life in Ealing, or maybe went back to my old one in childhood. I was still living with my parents after a year.

They went away on holiday. One night I was feeling lonely and downed a few glasses of whisky. I was thinking about Alice and the good times, there were lots of them, and decided I would call her. Her number was engaged. Seconds later my parent's phone rang and it was Alice!

After about a year we had both decided to phone each other at exactly the same time. This sobered me up considerably. She asked if I would like to meet up and foolishly I agreed.

The next day I drove down to Southampton and we got on well, so much so I stayed the night and the next day. The second evening we went to a pub and she was soon flirting away with other blokes. I realised then it would never work out with Alice so I left the pub without saying anything.

You might think the coincidence was Alice and I phoning each other at the same time but there was one more. As I left the pub I bumped into a girl who I used to work with while in Southampton. She was on her own and to keep the story short we got on famously. So much so that three years later we are still together and have a six month old son. We are getting married in September.

Without the coincidence of Alice and I phoning each other I would never have got together, by another coincidence, with my future wife and now be a proud dad."

The Purple Car Coincidence

Purple car coincidenceA 67 Not Out reader's coincidence story today, which may also have a touch of telepathy involved. My thanks to Megan T. for sending this to me, via email - appreciated.

Your site inspired me to start writing down some strange coincidences that have happened to me in the past. This one is the oddest/creepiest/coolest:

Just some background, I grew up in Kingston, NY which is about 90 miles from NYC (just for perspective) and about 10 miles from Woodstock, NY.

One afternoon about 11 years ago, a friend and I drove to Woodstock so I could buy my mom a mothers day gift. When we were done, we had nothing to do so decided on a whim to go on a nice drive near the reservoir, which was about 20 miles down the road and in the opposite direction of Kingston.

When we got there, we drove around for a bit then decided on yet another whim to go exploring in the hills behind the reservoir. We drove and drove and at one point, I looked in the rear-view mirror and thought I saw a purple car way behind us. I thought, "That's weird ... the only person I know with a purple car is Ryan," then dismissed it and kept driving and chatting with my friend.

Several minutes later a purple car went flying past us in the opposite direction. This time I could clearly see that the driver was in fact my brother Ryan, and my other brother Seth in the passenger seat. He saw me too and turned around. We stopped on the side of the road to say hi and how weird it was that we'd run into each other in such a remote, obscure place.

When I asked what they were doing way the hell out here, they said they just left Woodstock, they were there buying mom a mothers day gift at XYZ shop (I forget the name, blame it on aging lol) and when they were done, decided randomly to go for a drive back here.

Turns out I bought moms gift at XYZ and my brothers were in the same shop minutes after I left.

67 Not Out Readers Coincidence Stories - 16

A couple of 67 Not Out Readers coincidence stories today - many thanks to the contributors.

McDonalds signThe Burger King meeting
Near to where I live there is a McDonald's and a Burger King and I made my way to McD for a coffee. Once inside I had a strange feeling that I should go to Burger King instead. I followed my instincts and made my way there.

I bought a coffee, sat at a table and was about to read my newspaper when I saw a familiar face from my past. I felt sure it was an old friend from my Uni days. I went across to him and said, "Hello Dave."

Dave looked at me a little puzzled and couldn't place my face. "I'm Howard from our Uni days."

He then realised who I was. It had been the best part of twenty years, and we started talking about the 'good old days.'

Dave was passing through town so we exchanged email addresses and mobile numbers and I didn't think I would see him again.

Two days later I had to got to the local supermarket with my wife and parked next to a smart BMW. Sitting in the car was Dave and his partner!

They had decided to stay in town for an extra couple of days. That evening the four of us went out for a meal - not Burger King or McDonald's!

Since then we have been regularly in touch. I'm still not sure why we were drawn together again after twenty years. Maybe the reason will become clear in the future.

- Howard

Richard FeynmanThe name rang a bell
I have a story quite fresh in my mind that you may like.

I was online watching lectures at ted.com when I heard someone quickly mention Richard Feynman and the name stuck out to me.

Shortly after I saw a video link of a close friend of his speaking about him on a personal level. I started watching and all of a sudden, about 15 seconds in, I had a compelling feeling that this man was speaking about me.

I had the urge to look up this man and found that his death date was the night before I was born.

I called my friend and told him about this and he said he had just seen the video and felt like he knew this man.

I later went on to find overwhelming and numerous striking similarities between himself and myself all the way down to the smirk I often have where only one side of my mouth is used.

Two 67 Not Out Readers Coincidence Stories today. Thanks to Isa and Liz. If you have a coincidence story you would like published on this blog please use the Contact Button at the top of the page - thank you!

eye clip artThe Contact Lens Coincidence
"Here's my coincidence. I hadn't thought of it for years, but it came up in a conversation at a big family (Easter) gathering today:

Many years ago, when I was about 16, I lost my contact lens somewhere in my bedroom. My Mum helped me tear my room apart, looking for it, but no luck. We gave it up for lost and as she left my room, I put my hand in my housecoat pocket and there it was!

Fast foward 30 years and my 16 year old daughter has lost her contact lens in her room. We spend an hour or so looking everywhere and can't find it. I decided to tell her my story from years ago; she reached into her housecoat pocket and found the missing lens!

- Isa"

Boise Idaho clip artThe Crossword Solution
"My sister and I were home doing crosswords and visiting. The phone rang and my sister went to answer. She returned to tell me our oldest brother had died suddenly at his home in Boise, Idaho. He would be autopsied, and we'd hear from his wife and children later.

Stunned, I sat staring at my crossword puzzle. We talked a little about our brother. You know how it is when you get bad news like that. You feel a bit confused and unfocused, trying to take it all in.

I remarked to my sister: I feel like I can't think clearly. She replied, "I know. That's why we'll just sit here doing these meaningless crosswords for awhile."

She returned to her puzzle and I looked down at my own. The next clue was: Gem State capital. The answer was: BOISE.

Meaningless?

Peace to all,
Liz"

I must admit, Liz, that I didn't know Idaho was the Gem State or that Boise was the capital - but I am English!

Torrential Rain Coincidence Memories

A 67 Not Out Readers Coincidence Story today. My thanks to Angelina. If you have an interesting coincidence story suitable for publication please use the contact button at the top of the blog page.

"I was driving home from a friend's house and there was a downpour of rain. It was torrential and it made me nervous as the windscreen wipers were barely clearing the windscreen.I was concentrating hard but out of the blue I remembered when, as a child of about ten, I fell off my bike in the rain after a schoolfriend, Tracy T, skidded into my front wheel. I grazed my leg quite badly and since then have always blamed Tracy for a small scar I have on my knee.

I'm now in my mid thirties and had never seen Tracy T since leaving school.

The next day I had to give my mother a lift to the hospital for an appointment and on the way she said, "I never liked that Tracy T, the one who knocked you off your bike." I asked her why she remembered that incident and she said she had no idea why, it just came into her mind.

The following day I was in my car again and there she was. A bedraggled Tracy T was standing at a bus stop and it was raining. I pulled up and shouted out to her but a bus stopped behind me and she got on. I don't know if she had heard me or not. She may not have done because of the rain and the bus engine.

I mentioned this to my mother when I next saw her. She then told me that she had heard from a neighbour that Tracy T had been in town for a couple of days visiting family. As I showered that evening I noticed the scar on my knee and it was quite red. I've no idea why there was a connection with Tracy T over several days. The scar has now once again returned to it's normal colour and can hardly be seen."

30 Year Laptop Coincidence

Coincidence computerA 67 Not Out reader's coincidence story today. Thanks David.

"I have worked for the same large national UK company (70,000+ employees) for just over thirty years. I started out as an apprentice as part of a small intake on 1st September 1980.

One day my company laptop went faulty so I reported this to our central IT department. A guy arrived to fix it a couple of days later. To my astonishment the laptop engineer turned out to be one of the other apprentices I had started with all those years ago.

Whilst he was fixing the laptop we talked about the old days and the other people we originally joined up with – some of whom had left many years since. We realised that it had to be at least 30 years since we had last seen each other.

Then I realised the date: 1st September 2010! Exactly thirty years to the day.

The Church House Coincidence With Jack And Jill

Church House

Here's a spooky coincidence story today from 67 Not Out reader, Jill:

After we married my husband and I bought our home, where we still live today. It's a four bedroom dwelling that had once belonged to the nearby church and is situated at the top of a hill.

Previously it had been used as a home for the local vicar, but I gather the church sold this off about forty years ago. It is called 'Church House' and we moved in on March 3, 1984.

Six months after we moved in our son Jack was born.

Fast forwarding over the ups and downs of life, in 2009 our son got married himself to a great girl. And now comes the coincidence. She was born on March 3, 1984 and her surname is Churchouse. Plus her first name is Jill. It's therefore Jack and Jill and remember our house is on a hill!

But there is still one more twist as they have presented us with a beautiful granddaughter who was born on March 3rd!

The Peanut Allergy Psychic Prediction

PeanutsA reader's experience today via email from Jean - thanks!

If you have a coincidence, or similar story, you would like published on 67 Not Out please use the contact button at the top of the page - thanks, Mike.

"Lately I have been meditating a lot according to private religious practices. On the days of particular concentration and piety I find I have strange psychic/clairvoyant experiences.

One day on an airplane, while flying home over the holidays, I reflected on the fact that all flights served peanuts, and came to wonder about people with severe allergies to the nuts and what they did when they traveled. Did they call in advance? Is there a peanut-free zone created? Are the airlines annoyed or happy to oblige? On I daydreamed about what I would do if I had a peanut allergy and was flying.

There was a small layover. Then, on my connecting flight, the first thing the flight attendant said was, "Please note that we have someone with a severe peanut allergy on board and this will be a peanut free flight. Please refrain from opening any food products with peanuts."

This was absolutely wild, in a lifetime of flying (I am 28) I have never heard anything like that, nor ever wondered about it.

Love your blog, thought I'd share."

A girlfriend of mine is splitting up property with her ex. She decides to surrender their main house for a smaller one they own in a different neighborhood some distance away. She's concerned by the possible lack of friends and support in the new neighborhood.

Discussing it with an acquaintance, he says he has a friend that lives two doors down from her new place. Bingo, instant neighbor. Another friend reports a professional contact within two blocks of the new house. Finally, her aunt is able to connect her to yet another friend in the new neighborhood.

Seems like a sign ... and my friend is prepared to move, encouraged by such a series of coincidences that lead her to social contacts in her newly chosen place.

P.S. We're in Southern California, where you can live in a suburb for years and never know your neighbors. So moving into a strange new neighborhood and already connected to new neighbors is remarkable indeed!

Morchard Bishop village signAncestors Coincidence
Here's a couple of coincidences. The first one. About 10 years ago I first contacted my great aunt, who told me my father's great grandmother and her sister, Faith and Phoebe, had come from England, a small village called Morchard Bishop. I phoned my sister, who had recently moved from America to England to tell her. Without knowing anything about these ancestors my sister had also named her two daughters Faith and Phoebe and had bought her house there, 2 miles from Morchard Bishop.

Another little one. When we were very little kids my brother and I were given silver dollars by a visiting guest. In a fight with him I threw his coin into the garden. In looking for the coin later that day a grown-up said take a rock and throw it where you threw the coin. I (a lousy throw) threw a rock and it landed on the coin, which popped into the air like a tiddlywink and I was able to find it.

Blaenau FfestiniogUnknown relatives meet by coincidence
My wife and our children were going on holiday to Pwllheli in Wales. As we were driving up the hill going out of Betws-y-Coed our car decided to break down. We stopped completely at the top of the hill.

This happened a few years back before mobile phones were in general use. As we were stuck I tried to flag down other passing cars but none stopped to help. That is until a young couple in their late twenties finally came to our aid.

I told them I was in the RAC (a car breakdown service) and wanted to get to a phone for help. The husband said that he thought there was a public phone in the village near the slate mines of Blaenau Ffestiniog.

They kindly offered me a lift and said they would bring me back to my car after I'd made my call to the RAC.

We found the phone, which had quite a bad line, so I had to speak quite loudly to give my name and the details of where my car was.

When I'd finished making the call the wife of the couple said that she couldn't help but hear that my surname was McLoughlin and that this was also her maiden name. It turned out that her family and relatives came from the same part of Ireland where my parents still live.

Even more of a coincidence, we found out later, was that we are distantly related.

At the time the couple told us that it was a spur of a moment idea for them to decide to pay a visit to the slate mines, and that was how they had come to see us at the side of the road.

The chances of this happening must be so remote. I thought that it was weird as though some unknown force had derived such a rescue. Since that time we have become very good friends with the other couple and still visit each other regularly.

Great British Train JourneysWhen I had finished setting up this post it was time to have something to eat in the evening. Feeling lazy we put the television on while eating - okay I know it's not a good habit! - and the programme we watched was Great British Railway Journeys. By coincidence the places they travelled to were Betws-y-Coed and Blaenau Ffestiniog as mentioned in the above story. They are not exactly places you hear very often on television.

More jury service
I am a teacher and one day I was explaining to my young students how a jury works in a court of law. I told the class that I had only once been chosen as a juror. When I arrived home that evening I found amongst my post a Jury Notice. I had been called on to do jury service a second time.

I received the following sad little story after I published the post Where Is Heaven and thought it very apt.

GerbilGerald the gerbil goes to heaven
It was all very sad for Lucy as her pet gerbil died. She was in tears as I explained to her that Gerald would go to heaven. "Are you sure mummy? Will he be happy there?" she asked. I did my best to reassure her.

I wrapped Gerald up in a large square of material and took him to the refuse bin outside. I know this may sound heartless but, living in a flat, I had nowhere to bury him. I again explained to Lucy that Gerald would be able to get to heaven from there.

About 10 minutes later I felt a draft through the flat and noticed the front door was open. As Lucy is only four I panicked and rushed out to find her and there she was: sitting on an upturned bucket looking at the refuse bin.

I asked her what she was doing. "I'm waiting to see Gerald go up to heaven," she replied tearfully.
