The Evil That Men Do Lives After Them

Shakespeare The evil that men do lives after them

Karin and I walked to a car boot sale and got talking about someone we know. As we entered the car park where the sale was being held I said, "The evil that men do lives after them. The good is oft interred with their bones."

The Shakespeare Secret
I know, I know, a little pretentious but it seemed to fit what we were talking about - and I was once a bit of a Shakespearean actor. Okay, the last bit is a fib. The only time I've actually been on stage was during my school days. I remember my last role well as I was the Gay Youth. This was at a time when 'gay' only meant being carefree and happy! My friend played the part of the Sombre Youth - deep stuff. We were massive hits - all right, second fib.

I digress.

There wasn't much to interest me at the sale but I bought a paperback, titled The Shakespeare Secret, for 20p. As it was likened to the Da Vinci Code on the cover I thought it might be an easy holiday read.

As I opened the book I saw that on a page prior to the first chapter was the same quote I had said to Karin - see below. This was another reason why I bought the book, the synchronicity bell sounded.

Shakespeare quote The evil that men do lives after them

When I got home I absentmindedly opened the book and there on page 436 was the very same quote again.

Shakespeare quote

So I guess there must be something relevant for me in these words. Though I'm not sure what. In fact I feel that sometimes it's the bad that is interred, rather than the good.

It's still mentioned, for instance, how Jimmy Savile raised millions - up to $56 million - for charity and was knighted by the Queen; but let's hope it's never forgotten that he was also a rampant paedophile who molested hundreds of children. This only came to light after his death.

The Shakespeare quote is from Julius Caesar, I remember the speech as I had to learn it for English Literature exams when at school. I have a good memory. I've previously written about William Shakespeare Coincidences.

What I didn't know was that Julius Caesar was performed at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York in 1864. Mark Antony was played by John Wilkes Booth and his brother, Edwin Booth, played Brutus, and their brother Junius Brutus Booth, Jr was Cassius. The coincidence about this is that a few months later John Wilkes Booth shot Abraham Lincoln, supposedly with the cry, "Sic semper tyrannis" (thus always to tyrants). This was also attributed to Brutus at Caesar's assassination.

William Oxberry wrote similar words to Shakespeare: "Because it is a truth and a melancholy truth that the good things which men do are often buried in the ground while their evil deeds are stripped naked, and exposed to the world."

William Oxberry quote

Personally, when I look back on the lives of people close to me who have died all I remember is the good. Some things no doubt are best forgotten.

An Ode To Coincidence Via The Lord of The Rings

Concentration Camp barbed wire

It's strange how things come about. I was wondering what to write about today when I came across a small coincidence about JRR Tolkien. I'm not sure how, or indeed why, but this led me to Corrie ten Boom - someone I didn't know much about previously.

But first the small Tolkien coincidence. This is the start of his epigraph to The Lord of The Rings:

Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men, doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne

JRR Tolkien died in 1973 - and if you read the numbers of the verse in reverse order you get 1-9-7-3.

That's it, but as I said, this led me to Corrie ten Boom because I noticed that she had written a poem - said to be her favourite - called Ode to Coincidence.

Corrie ten Boom
I'll quote the poem in a moment but first brief details about Corrie. Her first name was Cornelia but she got called Corrie and was born in Amsterdam on April 15, 1892.

Her claim to fame is that, along with her father and other family members, she helped many Jews escape the Nazi Holocaust during World War II.

I read in a short biography of her and that: "During 1943 and into 1944, there were usually 6-7 people illegally living in her home." She and her family were later imprisoned for this.

Corrie later wrote a book about her experiences and ordeal called The Hiding Place. .

When made a prisoner by the Nazis a clerical error allowed her to be released from the concentration camp one week before all women prisoners her age were executed. Being very religious she said of this, "God does not have problems. Only plans."

This is her poem:

Ode to Coincidence
My life is but a weaving, between my God and me
I do not choose the colours, He worketh steadily.
Off times he weaves sorrow, and I in foolish pride,
Forget He sees the upper, and I the underside.
Not till the loom is silent and shuttles cease to fly
Will God unroll the canvas and explain the reason why.
The dark threads are as needful in the skilful weaver's hand
As the threads of gold and silver in the pattern He has planned.

There are many quotes attributed to Connie that make a lot of sense. Here are a few.

"Worrying is carrying tomorrow's load with today's strength - carrying two days at once. It is moving into tomorrow ahead of time. Worrying doesn't empty tomorrow of its sorrow, it empties today of its strength."

"How often it is a small, almost unconscious event that makes a turning point."

"Don't bother to give God instructions; just report for duty."

"Happiness isn't something that depends on our surroundings - it's something we make inside ourselves."

"Memories are the key not to the past, but to the future."

"Forgiveness is the key that unlocks the door of resentment and the handcuffs of hatred. It is a power that breaks the chains of bitterness and the shackles of selfishness."

"The measure of a life, after all, is not its duration, but its donation."

"Worry is like a rocking chair-it keeps you moving but doesn't get you anywhere."

... and many more besides.

And finally: Corrie ten Boom was born on the 15th of April and by 'coincidence' also died on the 15th of April - 1892 and 1983.

Author's Experiences Led Her To Believe In Life After Death

Heaven's Gate

Author Fay Weldon has reached her ninth decade and doesn't fear death. She believes we live on in an afterlife - though she has no idea where this 'somewhere else' might be.

Fay was brought up in believing that the laws of physics are immutable and are the same throughout the Universe - and yet somewhere there is still an afterlife.

She bases her beliefs, that we continue after death, on her personal experiences.

Firstly on near death experiences (NDEs). To quote her words:

"The first came when I was 17 and under anaesthetic for a knee operation. I felt myself hurrying down the tunnel of death towards a light at the end: the feeling of euphoria, or being united in companionship, was so vivid as to be unforgettable and convincing.

"This left me with the feeling that the Universe is benign, and I've been afraid of very little since."

Her second NDE was when she was in her 70s and her heart unexpectedly flat-lined. This is what she experienced:

Fay Wheldon
"Under anaesthetic in hospital, I saw the gates of Heaven, in garish colours rather than pearly white. I was being dragged through while others - I couldn't see their faces - tried to hold me back.

"Staring through the haze, I caught a glimpse of the other side. I had a clear impression of the same old familiar struggle going on there as here, good and evil mixed, one step forward, half a step back.

"Waking up in intensive care I heard myself say: 'Oh I see, just more of the same!' Whatever it was, Heaven or Hell, it didn't seem too bad, and it led me to the notion that death was just the continuation of life by other means."

Kay has also seen ghosts. She says:

"I accept that the unusual happens. For example, that the man in the preacher's hat whom I saw winking in and out of nothingness at the end of St Andrews pier in 1951 was, indeed, the parson from Dundee who drowned according to legend, on his way to preach to the students one Sunday in the year 1551.

"I felt spooked but ... at the time he just looked as a man would have looked 400 years earlier."

The NDEs and the ghostly sighting means she no longer fears death. She also claims that loved ones visit us after they die.

"You're lying asleep or walking down a street when they make themselves known, as if tapping you on the shoulder and saying, 'Hi, it's me. I've come to say goodbye.'

"You look around and there's no one there, yet you heard them clear as a bell. It's a kind of brushing of the spirits that puts grief to rest; a sudden, clear unexpected awareness of their presence for a second or two before they go off somewhere else."

And that is why Fay Weldon believes there is life after death - her experiences and feelings tell her this is the truth. Maybe we all get such glimpses throughout our lives and overlook them as tricks of the mind or imagination - but they may well be something more meaningful.

Observing What Is Often Missed

Pentewan Beach Cornwall

We walked to Pentewan Beach, Cornwall and found we were the only people enjoying the freedom, other than someone in the photo collecting shells.

The tide was out and the now exposed rocks were green with seaweed and looked as if they were replicating the cliffs in the distance.

Tide out in Cornwall

Some of the rocks were covered in mussels and other limpet like shell creatures waiting anxiously for the tide to turn.

Mussels on rocks in Cornwall

We walked to the cliffs where we spotted a sunflower painted on the rocks. This reminded us to look more carefully at the abundance of the wild flowers growing freely.

And many more besides. Returning from the beach we stopped at one of the seats to contemplate the small harbour at Pentewan. Seems it was only us in such a contemplative mood.

Sometimes it's good to wander, without thinking of time, and observing what is often missed.

How Cosmic Ordering Worked For Noel Edmonds

I recently published a post titled Place Your Cosmic Order For Whatever You Want. Today, when flitting through the Daily Mail newspaper, I saw an article about the UK television presenter Noel Edmonds and how he reckons Cosmic Ordering worked for him.

About seven years ago Edmonds lost his job with the BBC and was in the middle of a painful divorce - he had to sell his large home in Devon. But he claims to have overcome his problems with the help of Cosmic Ordering. He placed three main wishes (or cosmic orders): a home in the sun, a new career and a female companion to make him laugh and make him happy.

As Noel explained, "You have to pick yourself up and think: Right what's the next stage? What's the next chapter going to be? Some people stare at the moon and others the ocean. I wrote down the things I really wanted in life."

When he tried to tell friends and people in general about the idea of Cosmic Ordering the common reaction was mocking laughter with the assumption that he'd lost his marbles - but he has had the last laugh.

He waited, as you must, for the Cosmos to fulfil his order and, sure enough, his wishes came about.

Noel & Liz Edmonds
Today he has a house in the South of France, as well as a Georgian home near Bristol, a presenting job for Channel 4's Deal or No Deal, which has resurrected his television career and, yes, he's also got a lovely wife called Liz who makes him laugh.

Noel tells of how he remembers the very minute Liz came into his life:

"It was October 6, 2006 at 11 am," he remembers. "Liz was a freelance make-up artist working for the department at Endemol. When she came into my dressing room, I knew she was there before I turned round. I don't know what you call it - positive energy or whatever. All I remember turning round and thinking, 'There you are at last. There you are.'"

Liz felt the same magic moment. "As soon as we met - you know, you see it in the movies and read about it - I can't explain it. When I look back it was a kind of madness, but the madness felt right."

The couple are now married.

Noel Edmonds' Cosmic Order is complete but he still carries the piece of paper in his wallet with his three wishes - a reminder perhaps of how magical life can be.

If you don't ask you don't get.

"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you."

Where Does Graffiti End And Street Art Begin?

Graffiti cartoon

So when does graffiti turn into street art, and aren't we surrounded by it wherever we look?

"Is it a coincidence that graffiti was spawned in New York, arguably the world's most advertising saturated and simultaneously most media savvy city? One can argue that graffiti is the by-product of a society inundated with advertising. After all, both seek to do just that. Advertising and graffiti function on a Phenomenological dimension to awaken the viewer's curiosity. On one level they rely on the sheer amount of coverage and penetration, and on a deeper one they rely on the quality of the delivery to embed themselves into the human consciousness."

The Ghost Who Throws Boxes At Wellington Market

Wellington telford
Wellington
Wellington Market in Telford, England was established way back in 1244 - so no wonder there are ghostly happening from time to time. Take the case of the falling boxes at 2:22 a.m on May 4th this year, for instance.

Kay Boaky, the market manager, explains, "Basically, we came into the market in the morning and the boxes were all over the place, on the floor and over the stairs. We thought there had been an intruder so we obviously went straight to the CCTV.

"We couldn’t believe what we saw. The first person who watched it was the caretaker David Chapman.

"I came in two minutes later and he said: 'Boss you need to see this.'

"All the hair stood up on the back of my neck. There was nobody there when the boxes fell off. We watched it again and we could see the shadow walking up the stairs then chucking the boxes over."

Well that's Kay's version of events, but see what you make of the CCTV for yourself - it's only slightly over one minute long.

The manager went on to say how there have been other ghostly sightings in the building, "Sometimes there are strange things that go on when people are alone, some people say they have seen a shadow go past them. Once there were two people alone in the market, they were talking when they heard coughing coming from the other side of the building. They thought there must be someone else there but when they looked around it was totally empty.

"We also have times where the hand-dryer starts on its own or doors slam."

So ghost or no ghost?

I Ain't Never Did No Wrong Coincidences

Young Elvis Presley in black and white

I've mentioned previously that I like old rock music - some would call it rock and roll - this includes the early music of Elvis Presley before his Las Vegas shows and churning out those awful movies.

My favourite Elvis song is One Night, I won't go into reasons why, draw your own conclusions - but it brings back a shed load of memories.

On the car radio today they actually played the record - as they used to be called. Later in the day I found out that there is synchronicity attached to the record's release in 2005.

One Night was originally released in 1959 but was re-released on what would have been Elvis Presley's 70th birthday in January of 2005. This immediately went to the top of the UK charts - and this is where five coincidences materialise:

1. The single became the UKs 1000th Number One in the charts.

2. This made Elvis the first artist to spend 1000 weeks in the UK Top 40.

3. It was the 300th record to make it's maiden Top 40 appearance at Number One.

4. This was Elvis's 1200th week in the UK's Top 75.

5. It was Presley's 20th Number One.

A neat numbered coincidence package.

Death Is Freedom And All Is Well

Death Is Nothing At All

I have written a similar post to this previously about how Death Is Nothing At All, but a very similar thing happened today.

I wrote recently about how I needed to declutter my office. I was working my way though a case full of bits and pieces and came across a travel card in a plastic wallet which belonged to my mother who died in 2005. The strange thing is, I was thinking about her while I was sorting out.

I pulled the travel card from the see through wallet and behind this was a folded piece of paper. On this was written the very same poem I found once before in another of mum's wallets. On the paper someone had called the poem Death when it is actually called Death Is Nothing At All - you can see the full poem here.

Death Is Nothing At All Poem

It wasn't in my mother's handwriting so someone must have given this to her - it ends with All Is Well - a sign perhaps that all is well with her. I'd like to think so.

Freedom Pass

As for the travel pass itself this is called a Freedom Pass. Is that what death is? Freedom - and then all is well.

Makes you wonder.

A George Harrison Dream Coincidence

Leo Drioli

The following coincidence story is taken from an interview by UTG website with Leo Drioli.

Leo Drioli is the author of Every Moment's a Miracle and co-editor with his wife Enza Vita of InnerSelf Newspaper, an Australian personal growth publication. He has a blog Reflections From Eternal Vastness.

"I met George Harrison one night in the early eighties in the dream state. He took me across to a huge book. Turning each page I saw it was all written in Sanskrit, each letter shining in light and sound. I didn’t understand it intellectually but got it totally in the heart, recognizing the ancient wisdom as the path I was on. Filled with joy, I asked George, 'Are you also on the same path I am travelling?'

"He replied, 'There’s only one path, and we are all on it.'

"Later that morning, as I was at work on my job as a printer in Sydney, I suddenly heard My Sweet Lord come over the radio, which triggered the memory of that night’s dream, thinking it to be an amazing coincidence. When the song ended, the DJ announced that George Harrison had been spotted having breakfast in a café in Sydney that morning! I had no idea he was in town, yet the dream manifested.

How do you view this? Simply as coincidence or possibly an example of the field of unity we all co-inhabit?"

Leo is also a singer/songwriter, and has just released his first single, Give It Your Love.

How We Forget Truth And Created A False Reality

Creation of the world religions

I've written several times about how I believe there is no reality: there is only our realisation. I probably got this bee in my bonnet initially from Rosicrucian teachings. Recently though I came across a religion, or perhaps it's a philosophy, called Seicho no Ie which, I understand, means literally House of Growth.

As far as I can see Seicho no Ie is a mixture of elements from Buddhist, Shinto and Christian beliefs. This is how it was explained to me:

Symbol of Seicho no Ie
Symbol of Seicho no Ie
Seicho no Ie's main concept is that the world as we see it does not exist. It is only a reflection of divine reality distorted through the lens of the human mind, which is polluted through vices and sins.

If us humans could rid ourselves of these vices and sins and instead concentrate on the divine reality we would perceive the divine truth - which is said to be harmonious, beautiful and complete.

We would then perceive ourselves as the truly perfect, healthy and harmonious children of God and realise that illnesses and misfortune are just manifestations of our mistaken perceptions.

This also sort of ties in with another of my beliefs that we all create our individual worlds or circumstances through our actions, beliefs, attitudes and thoughts. In other words where we are now is because of what we have done in the past - some might call this karma.

This principle is hard to accept by many, especially if going through difficult times. I know the idea wavered in my mind last year when I was told I had kidney cancer, but that's another story.

This 'new religion' of Seicho-no-Ie was founded on March 1, 1930 by Masaharu Taniguchi when he published the first issue of his monthly magazine for spiritual training. It's doctrine is laid out in Masaharu Taniguchi's 40 volume Seimei no jisso, translated in English as Truth of Life. Obvious a man of many words as following this he also produced a furtherl 400+ books. Sources: History of Seicho-No-Ie and Wikipedia.

It all kicked off in Japan but has now spread across the globe, especially to Brazil. The founder died in 1985 and the President of Seicho-no-Ie is now Masanobu Taniguchi.

A big part of Seicho no Ie is meditation, shinsokan. Practitioners endeavour to direct their thoughts at the supreme divinity in order to see it's true form and so become also aware of their own true state of being.

There is an emphasis on the role of the family and on parenting. They also pay grateful reverence to their ancestors. Gratitude also appears to be very important - and no wonder - as it can reap worldly benefits such as healing, harmony and an individuals financial improvements.

All well and good but once we start looking at religions many are based on similar beliefs. I was also reading about Gedatsukai, which also started in Japan. It's focus is again on gratitude and reverence to parents and ancestors.

If we look at the Bible one of the 10 Commandments is to 'Honour your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. 'Islam has something similar: '... be dutiful to your parents. If one of them or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of disrespect, nor shout at them but address them in terms of honour.'

The more I read about religions more similarities come to light, at least in principle. In Christianity Jesus is the Son of God and in Seicho no Ie man is God's creation, and therefore has the infinite nature of God. Man is therefore the Son of God. And so it goes on.

It's as if 'we' once knew the truth but something interrupted this complete knowledge. So, like with Chinese Whispers, this altered and changed over time giving varying interpretations of this truth. As I said at the beginning of the post, there is no reality there is only our realisation, or interpretation of how anything actually is. It's the same with religions.

Coincidence Of A Message From Heaven

A touching story today from Jess, which covers coincidences combined with a message from Heaven.

When I was a young girl, my father used to go on long business trips. He would write a letter to me every day while he was away. My mother would make sure these letters were out for me to read each morning. They all contained a greeting, a Bible verse with something to learn from it, and where he was and how much he loved me.

As I grew up, I forgot about these letters.

My father passed away when I was 18, many years after he wrote those precious little notes to me.

For Christmas that year, my mother gave me a scrapbook with all of the notes she had found, in date order. I resolved to read them on the same dates, of the coming year.

The encouragement in each seemed to be exactly what I needed to hear, each day. This strange (but cool) coincidence continued until I reached my birthday. It seems that, all those years ago, he was away on my birthday. The tears rolled down my face (and are now, even as I write this) as I read:

"I miss you so much, my precious little daughter! I wish I could be there with you now, but God had another plan for my life. Know that I love you, am proud of you, and will always be watching out for you ..."

Somehow my father had managed to get the message to me that I wanted to hear, even from Heaven.

~ Jess.

Coincidence Between The Osama bin Laden Compound And Israel

Abbottabad, Pakistan where bin Laden was killed

This post takes us back to May 2011 and Osama bin Laden - remember him? At that time he was shot and killed inside a private residential compound called Abbottabad in Pakistan. That's an aerial photo above, which is in the public domain, of Abbottabad.

The JSS News website - which calls itself a 'webzine of Israeli opinion' came up with a theory about the shape of bin Laden's compound.

The website got out their maps and discovered that there was a resemblance between the aerial photo of Abbottabad and Israel.

If we look at the main house, where bin Laden was killed and captured, this is located where Jerusalem is found on a map of Israel. The compound's gate parallels the location Tel Aviv, its dumping ground matches the location of Tiberias and another building matched the location of Haifa.

A coincidence or something more?

Here's the two comparison pictures below.

Comparing Israel with Abbottabad

So, what do you make of this? I hadn't come across it before.
